Mission:
Episode 120 - Guardian at the Gate
Location: USS Essex bridge
Timeline: Current
Deela sat in her chair on the bridge in deep thought. She was thinking about her husband, wondering how he was doing. She also thought about her son and what he was doing. The last she heard was that he was doing okay at the academy. He was being praised for his knowledge of computers. She was proud of him.
Deela found herself smiling after frowning when she was thinking about Jack. Her thoughts were interrupted by one of her crew, "Admiral, one of the sensor arrays is malfunctioning."
Deela snapped out of it, "Don't they have a backup? Never mind. Which one?"
The crewmember looked over at Deela, "Um, the aft one."
"Okay." Deela went on comms, "Lieutenant Vox, please report to the bridge." She swore under her breath, "Damn. I swear the engineering crew that worked on the Essex were a bunch of monkeys." According to the pre flight checklist, everything was working fine.
Dee got the message. She soon arrived on the bridge.
"You needed me, Admiral." Dee commented as she stood by the command seat.
Deela looked up at her, "Yes. There is a problem with one of the sensor arrays."
Just then, Dr. Maab walked onto the bridge, "Oh, here you are Lieutenant. Good. Just the person I need to see."
"Vox is here to fix one of the sensor arrays." Deela seemed a bit irritated, "What do you need her for?"
"One of the biobeds aren't working. I was hoping to get it fixed before we get to our destination." Dr. Maab could see that Deela was a bit off today, "But if she can't get to it, I still have another bed that works."
Deela turned her attention back to Vox, "Anyway, as I was saying, the aft sensor array isn't working."
"I see. My team are going through all the ship's systems and running checks on everything. I will advise them to get straight onto the Aft Sensor Array. As for the Bio Bed, once I've sent the message for the Aft Sensor Array, I will join you in sickbay Dr. " Dee turned and moved over to the engineering console on the bridge. She sent a message to her team to look into the After Sensor Array, She moved back over and stood by Dr Maab.
"OK Dr., lets take a look at the bio bed."
Dr. Maab smiled, "Thank you. As they both started to step into the lift, Ariana walked out. Dr. Maab nodded to her. Once they stepped onto the lift, the door closed. Dr. Maab smiled at Vox, "So, how are you feeling so far?"
She looked at the Doctor for a moment. It then dawned on her that as the Chief Medical Officer, they would be aware of her pregnancy.
"Oh I'm feeling OK so far. "
Once they arrived at sickbay, Dee turned to Maab. "So which biobed is it and what exactly is wrong with it.?
"It's this one right over here." She pointed then walked towards it, "The clam shell arms won't extended from the side of the bed. These arms contain extremely high-resolution medical scanners which is the most important part." She walked over to the second biobed, It's supposed to do this."
Dee tapped the controls. There was the slightest of sounds as the biobed tried to raise the shell arms. "Hmmm it's either the mechanism is malfunctioning or something is jamming it." She commented. She began to take off the side panel to get a better view of the mechanism.
After removing the panel her sensitive nose picked up a burnt smell. On closer inspection she found the main drive had failed. "It's not malfunctioning, the drive has given up. I will get one from stores and comeback and fit it."
"Great. Thank you." Dr. Maab was glad that it was one less thing she had to worry about, "I guess that is one advantage of your pregnancy." She chuckled.
"You could say that. Although, a heightened sense of smell is also a problem sometimes. Especially when some of my team are excessive on the aftershave. I have asked one of my team to bring the part up so we can fit it.".
Once the part had been brought up, Dee removed the old one, pointing out the black areas where the motor had burnt out, and fitted the new one. The shell arms were once again functional.
"There we go." She exclaimed.
"Perfect. Thanks again." She smiled, "Maybe I can get Admiral T'Lar to ban the stuff. Her and I are friends after all." She again, smiled. "I'd better let you get going. I'm sure you are still needed on the bridge."
"I don't doubt that for a second." Dee chuckled.
Ariana had been off the bridge trying to catch up with the departments she hadn’t gotten around to before departure. “Problems?” She looked towards Deela as she moved to sit in the First Officer’s seat.
"The sensor array and one of the biobeds aren't working. I made the mistake of letting an engineering team in training to check out the ship to make sure everything is in working order. But Vox is now on it so hopefully, nothing else is wrong." She glanced around the bridge, "At least we have a good crew. Did you accomplish what you wanted to?"
Ariana nodded. "More or less, I've now got double the paperwork I have to do but right now no one is needing any Counselling so that's one less thing to worry about."
"Good." Deela glanced around the bridge, "Right now, there's not too much happening on the bridge. In fact, I really don't like patrol missions nor do I like dealing with the Borg. I'm not even sure what to expect when we get there."
"I've been thinking the same thing" Ariana offered a wry smile. "Question is do they really need us patrolling? Our new Borg allies would no doubt be able to hold their own against most, if not all enemies."
"They should. Oh well. I need to do a few things in my ready room. You have the bridge number one." Deela smiled at Ariana,"I've always wanted to say that." She laughed to herself as she got up and went to her ready room.
