On The Defensive

802 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Episode 119 - "Shattered Mirror"
Location: SS Dakota A forward cargo/shuttle bay
Timeline: Current

After visiting a friend aboard the Dakota, and instead of heading straight back to the station, Vox did a bit of a meandering route back. She soon found herself in the forward cargo area adjacent to the Shuttlebay. There was someone else there but she couldn't make out who as they were on the far side of the bay. She glanced around deciding where to head next before eventually getting back to her work.

Cameron heard someone moving around and considering he had told his small crew not to come into this area of the ship he wandered just who it could be. He quickly started putting his plans away as he reached for the small disruptor at the side of the table.

"Can I help you this is a restricted area." Said Cameron loudly

"Oh. Sorry. I wasn't aware of that, not being a crewmember of the Dakota. I'm Lieutenant JG Deezell Vox Assistant Chief Engineer, Starbase 400. I guess my curiosity got the better of me again." She replied somewhat sheepishly.

Cameron slipped the disruptor back in its holster and walked over to the Lt. " Well Lt. Vox this is not always a restricted area and since I forgot to lock the door it is as much my mistake." Said Cameron calmly. "We do not get many visitors being a civilian ship so look around if you like."

"We all make mistakes," Vox replied. She had a walk around. In doing so, she noticed a rather curious model. "This looks interesting. It looks like a security drone used by security services in my homeworld. What is it?" She asked

Cameron panicked slightly. The Lt had found one of the first scale models he had built as a proof of concept. He thought he had them all locked up. Thinking quickly, he said, "It is a drone I am developing as a toy for children." Said Cameron, it was not the truth, but it was not a lie either.

"I once had a drone of sorts when I was younger. I used it to explore the forest at the back of the family's land. This looks a bit too sophisticated for something meant for children. The one I had was a Torzed 5, but it looked considerably more basic than this. This looks like it has armour." She said, picking it up for a good look.

Cameron was really getting nervous now he was debating how much he could or even should tell this officer. Finally reaching a decision he would go with a downplayed version of the truth. " Alright you got me. What your holding is a proof of concept design for a drone system I am designing. The idea is that the drone can do the dangerious work like scanning the inside of a nebula or other things and do it for less cost then using a probe as well as be more manuverable.

It could also be used on away missions to give the away team real time visual data on an area. Sure tricorders are great and all but can a tricorder tell you if the lifesign is waiting in ambush or just looking around. Plus and this is the part I can not yet get to work if the drone is equipped with adaptive cammo it would be almost as good as a cloak." Said Cameron he had kinda gone off on a tangent but he was really interested in this area, the last recorded use of a drone was a few thousand years ago and he thought they might be useful again.

"Fascinating. It sounds like an exciting project. If you ever need my help, you can rely on me for full confidentiality." She replied

Cameron thought for a couple of seconds, "You know what? I have hit a snag with the adaptive camo. Maybe you can shed some light on how to use the Jem Hadar cloaking as the adaptive camo for the drone." Cameron said as he led Vox over to his work table.

She joined him at his work table. "Sure, I can take a gander at it. I have studied Jem Hadar technology somewhat, so I will see what I can do. Show me what you have so far. Do you have a padd I can use to bring up some of my research? " She asked.

Cameron looked around for a minute and found a padd he tossed it over to her. " you know what. I have been stareing at this stuff for 5 hours already. Maybe some time away is what I need, come at it from a fresh prospective." Said Cameron tiredly

"You're probably right. I will see what I can come up with while you take a break. I will get back to you when I have something."

Dee replied.
