Mission: Episode 119 - "Shattered Mirror"
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: MD1 0700 hrs

Leland sat drinking a cup of coffee in one of the sickbay offices. He had been headed home when he got a messge that Suki was meeting here, they were going to spend some time together. So he found an empty room and grabbed some coffee.

After the wedding, he had been assigned to help in the stations medical department while Lieutenant Commander Woodhouse was on her honeymoon. Lekand smiled and reminded himself she was Lieutenant Commander Bagwell now. It had been a nice wedding. He wondered what Suki would want when they decided to get married. He wasn’t going to ask her, that was for sure, she was as alpha as they came.

“Excuse me.” Jett said as he stopped in the doorway. “I’m here for a physical. They sent me back to see you.”

“Come in and have a seat.”’ Leland said with a smile. It looked like Suki would be waiting a few minutes while he took care of this patient. “I’ll get you taken care of.”

“Major Jethro Sherman.” Jett replied. “I just came to the station this morning and made an appointment.”

“You volunteered?” Leland grinned at him. “That is different, usually no one wants to come here.” He pointed to the examination table. “Hop up there.”

Jett took a seat and watched as the doctor started scanning him. “I prefer to face things head on. Figured I might as well get this over with, not like I have anything going on this evening.”

“It’s tough starting a transfer.” Leland nodded. “I haven’t been here that long but lucky for me my mate was assigned here as well. We’re taking things slowly until we get to know each other.” Leland didn’t know why he shared all that, but he did.

Jett stared at him for a moment and smiled after a moment. “Your Betazoid. Are you two bonded?” He found he was interested in their culture. “If I am out of line, just tell me.”

Leans took a blood sample and started to run it and turned back to Jett. “You’re good. I don’t mind the questions. Suki and I were bonded as small children. Our connection is strong.”

Jett thought about what he said for a moment and then spoke. “What if I wasn’t?” He shook his head. “What I mean is what if it worked for one of you and not the other?”

“That isn’t the way it works.” Leland smiled. “Our parents decide together to bond us. It is strong and we are together for the bonding it connects us in ways that are hard to understand.”

“You never met someone you wanted to be with?” Jett asked him, curiosity taking over. He probably shouldn’t be asking these questions but he was interested.

“There were women I was attracted to.” Leland said honestly. “But not enough to betray what I have with Suki. When I first saw her on the station it was like zi came home.” He shook his head. “You must think ai am weak.”

“Not at all.” Jett shook his head, his eyes were serious. “If I am going to be honest I am a bit jealous.”

“Jealous?” Leland was surprised. Most of those outside their culture didn’t understand or thought it was wrong, saying that it is wrong for them to not have a choice.

“I mean you don’t have to go through the whole dating thing of what if she doesn’t like you.” Jett explained. “Or what if she cheats on you or in the end she decides she doesn’t love you and just walks away.”

“Bonds have been broken.” Leland informed him. “I’ve been told it takes a toll on the couple and is highly not recommended. “ Them he smiled. “Suki and I aren’t just jumping into marriage, we want to get to know each other first.”

“I respect that.” Jett murmured. “You want to have something more than the bond.” It was weird talking to him like this. Jett wasn’t one much for feelings but lately he had been questioning parts of his life. There wasn’t anyone back at the base to talk to, he would undermine his work relationship with his men if he even tried.

“Are you married?” Leland asked him. He had a feeling he knew the answer but he asked anyway. The major wasn’t wearing a ring but in some marriages that meant nothing.

“No.” Jett shook his head. “I have been in relationships but othinf panned out. I am beginning to think I am meant to be single. It would take a special woman to be in a relationship with a marine, our lives aren’t easy.”

“It is possible.” Leland informed him. “My former Captain serves as the marine general and he just got marrried a few days ago. They have been together a long time. Dr. Woodhouse knew what she was getting into.”

“So you are saying there is hope for me yet?”’Jett said with a grin. He suddenly felt better. Maybe he would meet someone here. Jett wasn’t settling for having a few things in common. He wanted the real deal, like so many others had.

“You will meet someone.” Leland nodded. “You just need to be patient and let it happen. Don’t stress over it, just relax and let life happen. It tends to work out better that way.”

“You’re right.” Jett grinned. “I don’t even know what prompted me to say all of this to you. It isn’t like I have been actively looking for someone.”

“It’s easier to talk to a stranger.” Leland said as he finished the examination. “I don’t have cause to say a word to anyone.”

“I appreciate that.” Jett suddenly felt embarrassed about their conversation. “How did I come out?” He asked him.

“Everything looks good.” Leland said. “I will get your results written up and let them know you are cleared for duty.”

Jett stood up and held out his hand . “It was nice to meet you, Doc. Thank you for taking care of me right away.

“You are welcome.” Leland shook his hand. “I’ll walk out with you.”

As they headed into the entrance, Jett watched as Leland headed over to a beautiful woman who was smiling at him. That was what Jett wanted one day, someone to spend his life with.
