The corridors of the facility Melody was in were like a maze...one dead end after another. Melody was starting to wonder if she had fallen through a rabbit hole somewhere or maybe this was all just a dream and she was safely asleep on board her beloved Blaze and would wake up any time.
Melody rounded a corner and came to an abrupt stop. About four feet in front of her was a door with a sign over it the read, “EXIT”. She looked around, quickly, then moved toward the door. She pressed the button on the control panel on the wall next to the door, fully expecting nothing to happen, but the door slid, silently, open, revealing the darkness of night.
Even though she had discovered a way to time her jailer's meal deliveries, she had no idea and no way of knowing what time of day it was and, as she stepped out of the facility and into the cool night air, she wondered how long she had been there.
Melody kept close to the building as she moved, silently, away from the door. The building was situated on the top of a hill all by itself. When she was far enough away from the door, she pushed away from the wall of the building and moved forward, crouching low, and keeping a watchful eye on her surroundings. When she reached the point where the ground began to slope downward, she squatted down and looked around. Approximately fifty yards down the hill was a 12' high chain link fence with coils of razor wire on top. From what she could see in the light from the floodlights that lit the compound, the fence was the compound's perimeter and probably surrounded the entire compound.
Keeping low and to the shadows, Melody made her way around the crest of the hill, following the fence. When she had gone about 150 yards, she, once again, squatted down in the shadow of a small storage building and looked around. Behind her was the building where she had been held. It was a large round building that appeared to have, at one time, been some sort of warehouse. In front of her was a gate and what appeared to be the main entrance to the compound. It was an automated gate that opened only when the guard in the small guard shack opened it. She observed two vehicles entering the compound and one truck leaving. Another truck pulled up to the gate and stopped. It was an old canvas covered open bed truck. The driver got out of the truck and went inside the guard shack to talk to the guard.
Melody moved swiftly and silently toward the truck. She went to the back of it and quickly looked around. When she was sure no one was around to observe her, she lifted the flap of the canvas covering and climbed into the bed of the truck and hiding behind the metal drums already in the bed. After several minutes she heard the door of the truck open and the driver get in. He started the engine and slowly pulled forward. Melody moved to the front of the truck bed and stood up. Through a hole in the front of the canvas covering, she watched as the truck rumbled down the road.
