With the briefing over Ariana accompanied Anna down to the Falcon’s Sickbay, it was fair enough that Anna wanted to check her over after everything that had happened to her in the past few months. In fact she welcomed Anna’s caution, after losing one of her twins last pregnancy she was grateful for another chance.
She smiled at Anna. “It’s good to see you again Anna, I’ve missed you and Zeke. How have you been?”
“Good!” Anna said with a smile. “We couldn’t be happier.” She looked at Ariana. “How is your family doing?” She waited for her to answer.
“They’re doing great, Stacie is growing up faster than I’d like though and she’s seen more of her father than she’s seen of me with my having been off on the Mercy, and now here I am again away from her.”
“It’s the way of our lives,” Anna said with a smile. “Soon, Zeke and I will be experiencing the same things. I am looking forward to being a mother.”
“Well I hope everything goes to plan for you. It’s a finely tuned balancing act, and I won’t lie it’s hard leaving your child behind.” Ariana sighed.
“I can’t imagine but We will have each other in the future to commiserate,” Anna said with a smile. “For a while I worried I would never be a mother but something has changed and I know I will be.”
“All it takes is that belief” Ariana smiled. “Cameron wants to have a big family, I more or less teased him into this little one.” She lay her hands on her bump. “I think a break will be in order before we try for number three!” She grinned.
Anna grinned at her. “As long as your healthy and happy that is what is important.” She pointed to the table. “This won’t take long, a few scans and a test and you will be cleared.”
Ariana nodded and hopped up onto the biobed. “Would you do something for me? I haven’t asked the sex of my baby yet, I have an instinct but I’d like to confirm it.”
“Of course,” Anna said with a smile. “What are your instincts telling you?” She asked her, curious as to what Ariana was thinking.
“I feel ... a boy!” Ariana looked at Anna hopefully. “I lost my first son, I don’t want to be hoping if I’m wrong.”
“Let’s get to this,” Anna said with a smile as she started her scans. “Do you
have a name picked out already?”
“Not yet” Ariana shook her head. “After the events of my last pregnancy I’ve been holding off making early decisions. I’m probably being over cautious.”
“Believe me, I understand that,” Anna said with a nod. When she and Zeke and first decided they were ready for a baby she had sat and come up with names.
Ariana smiled. “Plus I want time to sit down with Cameron, enjoy a romantic evening and come up with names together. Like couples should.”
“I totally understand that,” Anna said quietly. “I look forward to Zeke and I doing that one day.” She frowned as she observed the scan she was running and decided to run it a second time, with a deeper look at the baby.
Ariana saw the frown and her own brow furrowed with concern. “Is there something wrong?” She looked at Anna in concern.
“I am simply taking another look,” Anna said, not wanting to get Ariana concerned when she wasn’t certain of what she saw. “You know I am thorough.”
Ariana nodded. “If there’s something wrong ... please tell me.” She looked at Anna with a worried expression on her face.
“There looks to be a defect,” Anna replied. “It can be repaired with surgery and everything should be fine with the baby. It is why I am running a second scan.”
Ariana nodded as she watched Anna. “What kind of defect? My last scan a couple of months ago was fine.”
“There is a defect near his heart,” Anna explained. “Medicine is so advanced all that will need to be done is for A simple procedure with myself and the base doctor. It is pretty routine.”
“So it’ll be sorted once he’s born? Or will something have to be done before then?” She looked at Anna concernedly. Right now she was wishing Cameron was with her.
“We will take care of it now,” Anna said. “Once this mission is over and he will be born a healthy and happy baby boy.”
Ariana nodded. “You make it sound so routine” She offered a brief smile. “Thank you for being so reassuring Anna.”
“I’m your friend,” Anna said with a sincere smile. “I will always be honest and I want to help in any way that I can.”
Ariana nodded. “I appreciate that very much. I’m lucky to have such good friends.”
“I am lucky to be friends with you,” Anna replied sincerely. “I am so happy you were assigned to us.”
“So am I” Ariana smiled. “I’ve been out on the Mercy twice as XO, I’m grateful to be assigned as Counsellor this time. Not that I’m complaining about being second Officer here.”
Anna smiled. "No, I understand what you are saying, you want to work in your field."
Ariana nodded. “Exactly, especially whilst I’m pregnant. I’m surprised I was assigned off station although Doctor Corrigan is too and we’re not that far apart in term.”
"Perhaps someone saw what an exceptional officer you are," Anna said with a smile. "There is none better to serve under than Zeke." She grinned. "I am a little prejudiced."
Ariana grinned. “Well I can’t blame you for that.”
Anna smiled at her. "You know how much I love him. But I was being honest, Zeke is good at what he does and we are lucky to have you aboard."
