Mission:
Episode 103 - In The Darkest Days...
Location: USS Pegasus
Timeline: MD3 1505hrs
ON:
The Pegasus closed in on the Geātura system, home to Romulan Defense Base 30. During the trip, the Pegasus had made a series of slipstream jumps deep into Romulan space. They scouted the Lambda Crateris and Khazara, and the Gamma Crateris systems. They had also intercepted a Romulan transmission that said the Fel'tarin Shipyards had been destroyed by a 'Federation ship of unknown design'.
Reading the report, Mike knew it could have only been one of two ships, either the USS Odyssey or the USS Gladiator. Either way, it would make the Pegasus's raid on RDB30 just a little easier, since ships from there had been sent toward Fel'tarin.
"Admiral to the Bridge." K'Wor called over the comm.
Walking onto the Bridge from his Ready Room, Mike looked at his officers. "Report."
"We're nearing the Ge'tura system. There's been a development." Roebuck reports as he stood from the XO's chair.
"We're picking up three Romulan ships entering to the system ahead of us, and the lead ship has signaled the base to go on alert." Draven reported.
"What type of ships?" Mike asked.
"One d'Deridex and two Mogai type cruisers." Ramata'tar reported.
"The Warbird is the Terix" K'Wor added.
"Tomalak?" Mike asked.
Roebuck nodded.
"Defenses at RDB 30?" Mike asked.
"Standard ch'Ron type Romulan base. Thirty-Two type-16 disrupter cannon, capable of firing beam or pulse
Twelve type-12 disrupter cannon, fifteen plasma torpedo tubes two thousand plasma torpedoes, shields equivalent to Starfleet's Class-9 bubble shielding, heavy Duranium/Tritanium double hull plus ten centimeters of high density armor, and a high output SIF." Draven said as the read from one of his displays. "They also have four drydocks, two are empty."
"Not anymore." K'Wor cut in, "Both cruisers are in the middle docking procedures." K'Wor smirked.
Mike thought for a moment, "Alright...Chief, we're going to warp in cloaked. You'll need to dropped us out of warp as close to the base as you can, and if you can find a blind spot even better. Ramata'tar, how long do you need to decloak and fire torpedoes?"
"Less than a second. Phasers and shields will take a moment longer." The Jem'Hadar First replied.
"Gilmore, you'll need to try and jam their sensors. Roebuck, I want to drop some cloaked mines so they don't forget about us. K'Wor, you'll need to allocate every bit of power you can to the shields and be ready to shunt it to the warp and slipstream drives at a moment's notice. Draven, try to break into their communications systems, and if there's time to leave them a gift, do so. Robinson, once we take hits, do whatever you need to to keep the shields and engines online, and have Blackthorne's teams ready to jump on any damage." Bremer issued the orders, knowing his crew was ready.
"Alright, let's go. Warp us in Chief." Bremer finally ordered as he took his seat.
The Pegasus streaked into the system and right up to RDB30's front door as she dropped out of warp next to the base. As she decloaked, the Pegasus let loose with a spread of Photon torpedoes at the base followed by Tricobolt torpedoes at the drydocks. The drydocks exploded, taking with them the ships they were docked inside, including the two cruisers that had just arrived. With power routed to all weapons now, the Pegasus's phasers opened up on the base too. Her cannon ripped a hole into the engineering section of the base. As they raised shields the Pegasus fired a volley of Hellfire torpedoes as the Operations and Administrative levels.
"Tomalak's Warbird is on the far side of the planet. He's breaking orbit and on an intercept course." Roebuck reported.
The Pegasus shook from a hit, then another, and another.
"They finally got power to their weapons systems." K'Wor reported.
"Evasive maneuvers Chief!" Mike yelled over the sound of another impact.
"Shields, holding, eighty percent." Ramata'tar calmly reported.
"Damage to power couplings on deck eight, Blackthrorne's damage control team is on the way." Robinson reported from the Bridge engineering station. "I'm heading down to Engineering."
The Pegasus returned fire on the base, knocking out one of its disruptors, but the Pegasus took another hit.
"They're countering my jamming signal...I'm going to use two Class II probes. One with a remote jamming suite and the other giving off a sensor image of the Pegasus so some of their weapons might go after it instead of us." Gilmore said as she quickly typed in commands at Science One.
"I'm into their comms, downloading their latest intel reports and fleet deployments." Draven added.
The Pegasus shook again.
"Hit the base again, go for their main power relays." Mike ordered as the Pegasus turned back toward the old base. The ch'Ron type Romulan base were an old design, over a hundred years old to be exact. RDB30 was built in 2301 itself, and even though it had seen upgrades, it wasn't as powerful as bases like Starbase 400.
"Probes away." Gilmore reported. "I set the second probe on a series of manuvers to emulate a ship...and they're already firing at it."
"I have all the intel downloaded, leaving a cascade virus behind now." Draven reported.
"The probes are working, we're taking substantially less weapons fire now." K'Wor reported, just before the Pegasus took a hard hit.
"That came from Tomalak's ship!" Reobuck reported.
"Break off from the station, target the warbird's engines!" Bremer ordered.
A burst from the Pegasus's forward launchers sent half a dozen quantum torpedoes at the warbird, most hitting the port nacelle.
"He's hailing us!" K'Wor said, kind of surprises.
"Open the channel." Mike said.
"The old Romulan Admiral appeared on the screen. "What are you doing? One ship attacking a Romulan base? You'll never escape Admiral Bremer."
"Escape isn't the plan." Mike replied coldly.
"Then what is? Suicide for you and your crew?" Tomalak replied sarcastically.
Mike snarled. "You murdered my wife!"
"It's war!" Tomalak replied back as his ship shook.
Mike glared at the screen, "Be sure to tell that to the mothers and fathers we're making childless, and the children we're making orphans." Mike tapped a button on his chair's panel and closed the channel.
"Ramata'tar, set the cannon to pulse mode and target his starboard nacelle." Mike ordered.
The Pegasus took another hit from the base, then one from the Warbird.
"Shields at sixty-one percent. I've routed everything I can to the shields, including auxiliary power." K'Wor said.
"Engineering to Bridge, we have buckling in the center-line nacelle, the structural integrity field is holding, but it'll need some work when we can break free of the incoming weapons fire." Robinson reported over the comm.
"Direct hit on the warbird's starboard nacelle, they're pulling back, venting drive plasma.
"There's a complication, I'm picking up a dozen, no two dozen Alliance life signs on the base!" Draven said excitedly.
"Why didn't you see them before?" Roebuck asked.
Draven tapped in commands on his panel, "Their holding area is designed to mask life signs. They're trying to reroute power to their shields and pulled it from their brig."
"Chief, set course passed the base, keep us in transporter range. K'Wor, drop shields long enough to transport and beam them directly to sick bay. Ramata'tar, hit the base with everything we've got, but in an area away from those life signs. Doctor Mclintock, prepare for incoming casualties." Mike ordered.
The Pegasus turned and flew back toward the base, a pass they we're planning. As she closed in her phasers fired, torpedoes launched, and pulse phasers burst forward. Once in transporter range the shields dropped and as the Pegasus beamed POWs aboard she was hit by several disruptor beams and pulses as well as a couple of plasma torpedoes.
"We have a hull breach on deck ten, forward station and on deck eight section twelve. Damage control teams are on their way, emergency force-fields are holding." Robinson reported over the comm.
Finally the shields were back up.
"Chief, warp nine, get us out of here." Bremer said.
"We have incoming Romulan ships, dropping out of warp on the far side of the planet." Ramata'tar reported from tactical.
The Pegasus finally blasted away at warp.
IRW Terix
On the Bridge of the Romulan ship a medical officer was treating a burn on Tomalak's right arm. "Track that ship, whatever it takes."
"They just went to warp, but we're already tracking their course." An officer on the other side of the bridge replied.
"Major, you better be right. I want the Pegasus destroyed." Tomalak replied.
The Tal Shiar Major just smirked.
