Episode 103 - In The Darkest Days...
Location: USS Laffey / Peloi
Timeline: MD1, 0120hrs
ON:
The USS Laffey had entered the Triangle during the night and had to avoid a couple of Gorn ships that were in the area. As they neared Peloi they dropped out of warp and scanned the area.
“Anything Ensign?” Bremer asked.
Haper was at Tactical Two and watching the passive sensors. “No sir, no ships.”
“Unless they’re cloaked and holding position.” K’Temoc added.
“Now picking up debris, it’s from a Federation Excelsior class vessel. There’s also debris from a Romulan Preax and Valdore.” Harper reported a few moments later.
“I have life signs on the planet. Human, Andorian, Klingon.” K’Temoc reported as he looked back at Mike.
“Move us into high orbit.” Bremer ordered.
The Defiant class ship eases closer to the planet.
“Active sensor sweep. Sweep the area twice, then adjust our orbit.” Mike said.
“No ships on sensors, no residual tachyons or neutrino emissions.” Harper reported.
Mike paused. It felt like a trap, but he had to decloak to beam up the survivors. “Raise shields and decloak. Lower the shields only to transport.”
The Laffey decloaked.
“Transporters locked on. There’s eleven down there, so two cycles will be needed.” K’Temoc said.
But before they could start transport the Laffey was hit.
“A Romulan d'Deridex type Warbird and a Mogai type cruiser!” Haper reported.
“I never saw them either!” K’Temoc reported.
“Get us out of orbit so we can maneuver!” Mike ordered, “Target the Mogai first.”
The Laffey broke orbit after taking another hit, and moved away from the planet. Her pulse phasers ripped into the Romulan cruiser. Two quantum torpedoes followed. The smaller of the two Romulan ships shook and turned away toward the planet trying to evade.
“Lieutenant, Attack pattern Delta-Two.” Bremer said.
The Laffey turned and followed the Mogai, firing another burst from her pulse phasers. This time two green Hellfire torpedoes followed. They ripped into the ship’s hull and ripped off one of its wings. A moment later a couple of escape pods shot away from the Mogai and toward the planet before the ship exploded.
“Evasive maneuvers, get us clear of the planet.” Mike said as he tapped in a few commands on his left panel. “Get us in close on the Warbird. We can out maneuver them and they’ll have a hard time getting a target lock with us close.”
The Laffey turned away and got some distance between her and planet before getting closer to the big Romulan ship. The Laffey took several hits as they neared the Romulan ship, while firing back. Her quantum torpedoes hit the bigger ship’s shields while two more Hellfire torpedoes skipped past the shields and hit the hull directly, damaging her warp engines. Once in close, the Laffey strafed the Romulan ship with her pulse phasers, until she was grabbed by the Romulan’s tractor beam.
“Targeting the beam!” Harper said.
“Tring to remodulate our shield frequencies but it’s having no effect.” K’Temoc said.
“Helm, hard to port and increase to full impulse.” Bremer said.
The Laffey shook as she tried to pull away. She then took a couple of hits and sparks, smoke, and vapor filled the air.
“Shields down to twenty percent.” K’Temoc reported.
Finally, the Laffey broke free after a torpedo destroyed the tractor emitter. As the Laffey pulled away, she was hit again and again by the Romulan ship, however she returned fire. Three Hellfire torpedoes ripped to the Warbird’s nose, knocking out their primary disruptors. The Laffey then ripped into the Warbird’s port nacelle and knocked it offline. As the Laffey turned the Romulan weapons found their mark.
“Shields offline.” Harper yelled.
“Helm control is gone too.” Said the Lieutenant at Flight Control.
K’Temoc hit the Tactical One panel, “Weapons are offline.”
“The Romulans aren’t much better off. The main power is fluctuating and their weapons are going offline.” Harper added.
“They’ve locked onto us with a tractor beam again…but they’re reversing the polarity and are pushing us toward the planet. I can’t compensate!” The flight controller reported.
As the Laffey was pushed toward the planet the ship was hit with the last volley from the Romulan ship. The conn panel exploded and killed the Lieutenant there. Another explosion ripped away the starboard nacelle housing.
“Abandon ship.” Bremer ordered.
K’Temoc tapped in commands on his console before getting up.
As Harper stood his panel exploded and burned his leg, sending him to the deck. Bremer picked up the Ensign as he and K’Temoc headed to their escape pod.
As their pod shot away and toward the planet only one other pod managed to jettison before the USS Laffey exploded. The explosion obscured the Romulan’s sensors and they didn’t see the pods get away. The Romulan ship also took damage from the exploding Laffey and they slowly turned away from the planet and limped away, toward Romulan space.
Once on the ground, Bremer, K’Temoc, Harper, one crewman from the Med Bay and two crewman from Engineering found themselves in foothills on the edge of a desert. The stars were bright in the sky on the moonless night.
K’Temoc scanned the area with his tricorder. “The pods set us down about two kilometers from the survivors of the Yuzhao. I was able to input the coordinates before we left the bridge.”
“Let’s set up a camp.” Bremer said. “Crewman, can you treat the Ensign’s wounds?”
The Petty Officer nodded as she grabbed a med kit from her pod.
