Mission:
Episode 102 - The Rising Tide of War
Location: Science Lab 3
Timeline: MD1, 0800 hours
On:
Coleman was sitting in Science Lab 3 on Level 1633, catching on several reports that had collected and snuck up on him while he was on Ambassadorial Duty with the Pegasus. Not only did the reports come from Starbase 400, but the Vulcan Science Academy. The Academy had sent back several of his reports that he sent in before leaving for Starfleet and they had requested that he revise them because they had concluded that his ideas were impossible and that he had a “Human proclivity for always wanting to be right.”
REading over why the revisions were needed, Coleman couldn’t help but chuckle. Seeing as he was only half human and well over four centuries old, he was twice as old as most Vulcans and had an equal intellect, or so he hoped. He told himself that he wouldn’t have been on the Vulcan Science Academy’s roster if they didn’t see him as an equal with some measure of intelligence.
Thinking for a moment, Coleman simply wrote “Return to Sender” with a small note on it saying, “Human proclivity helped to prove more than the Vulcan Science Directorate has beforehand. Take the time to read the report.”
Shaking his head as he sent that report back to the Vulcan Science Academy, he heard someone let out a small cough. Turning around to see who it could’ve been, he noticed someone with black hair. She was wearing a blue uniform with rank pips for a full Lieutenant and had a PADD in her hands.
“What can I do for you Lieutenant...Lieutenant?” Coleman said, offering up a hand to greet the officer, but she didn’t immediately shake it. She looked as though she was Vulcan for a moment, but notting the missing points on her ears made it easy to realize that she wasn’t one.
Finally extending her hand out and shaking Coleman’s, she said, “I’m Lieutenant Ariel Gilmore. I’m one of the Science Officers under your command, sir and you’re Lieutenant Commander Nicholas Coleman, brother of Commander Jonathan Coleman. It’s nice to finally meet you, sir.”
Looking at her confused as they both let out of the hand shake, she finally let a small smile grace her lips.
“I read your Starfleet Personnel File once they announced that you were coming aboard. Hearing the name, I recognized it from somewhere and I wanted to see where. Digging into your file showed that you and your brother were both in Starfleet and who your brother was, so I wanted to come by and introduce myself. Anything you need help with, just let me know!” Gilmore said, handing the PADD to Coleman with an inventory of the department, including a general status update on the comings and goings on the officers and their current projects.
Coleman had barely gotten onboard before he was shipped out with the Pegasus for Ambassadorial duties. So, he hadn’t had much chance to meet many of his new officers and get to see what they were doing. He was able to see that Kalani was working on the Klingon artifacts and the museum, but he hadn’t had much chance to see anything else.
“Well, if you have some time, I could see some help finishing up some reports and it would be nice to have someone to show me around the department. Admirals Bremer and T’Lar want a couple updates on how the department is doing and where we could improve. Would you mind helping me out with that” Coleman asked, scratching the back of his neck and hoping that Gilmore would help out.
Gilmore nodded and agreed to show him around. They started out with a general science update in Science Lab 3, since they were already there and several important experiments were being conducted in that lab. After that, they slowly moved around the department and Coleman was able to gather all the data that he needed for his report. After they concluded their walk, Coleman headed back up to his office to finish them up and send them off.
After he sent them off, he finished up his duty shift and gave it to the next duty officer, since Coleman had worked a Delta Shift run, to help him see what it was like for all of his officers. After going off, Coleman decided to head down to the Promenade to see what the ‘night life’ was like.
