Mission:
Episode 102 - The Rising Tide of War
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD01 1500 hrs
Having arrived and gotten settled back in aboard the station after returning from honeymoon, Christina made her way to Sickbay to have her medical records updated with her pregnancy test results. Walking into Sickbay she looked around for whomever might be free.
“...hourly vitals and ask Ensign Johannson for a consult,” Doctor Mendez instructed as he rounded the corner, signing off on a medical chart and handing it to the nurse who turned and hurried away. It was turning in to a busy afternoon, but not in a good way. He hadn’t even stepped foot in an OR yet.
Hades was awake, he was healing and was as stubborn as ever. It was a good sign. Because the sooner he was back, the sooner Mendez could get back to what he did best.
Turning towards the Doctor’s lounge, noticing the new arrival. “I’m Doctor Mendez,” she offered by way of introduction, “can I help you?”
Not another food poisoning case he hoped.
"You certainly can" Christina smiled. "I'm Christina Rivera-Hurd, I need to have my medical record updated with these results." She handed the PADD with the test results on to him. "I stopped by Sickbay aboard the starship that brought us home from honeymoon."
“Hurd... as in the new Mrs Hurd?” Mendez asked as he took the PADD, activating it to scan the details as he gestured for the woman to take a seat on the nearby biobed. “They should have updated this for you after the scan was complete but I’ll make sure... and... congratulations.”
"Thank you" Christina smiled and nodded. "And yes, I'm General Hurd's wife. Funny thing is we spent our honeymoon doing the usual things honeymooners do with a plan to have a family of our own, and it seems we didn't need to!" She grinned. "I was pregnant before we left!"
“Well. Quite...” Mendez said absently. “Doctor Kelley is our specialist so I’ll have her reach out to book in regular scans and appointments. She will ensure all goes smoothly. I can give you home some of the basics, things to eat, safer exercises that sort of thing?”
"That would be great" Chrissy smiled and nodded. "I know David has the parenting skills, but this is my first...successful."
“I realise it is early but any sickness, excessive tiredness? Anything concerning you?” Mendez asked.
"No sickness yet, some tiredness but I put that down to the fun I had on honeymoon!" She grinned. "If you check my notes you'll see that I was pregnant once before, I didn't get past the first trimester. My husband doesn't know, I don't want to worry him. I'm understandably nervous!"
Mendez’s finger hesitated over the PADD for a fraction of a second before he scanned through the previous medical charts. “It’s only natural,” he said finally. “And there is no reason why your husband would need to be made aware. It may help you though, to have someone to speak to. We have a number of counsellors on board too.
“In the meantime, we can make sure you have more checkups, it will help put your mind at rest.”
Chrissy nodded. "I'd appreciate that. I think that I should tell David though." She sighed. "We don't keep secrets, I've never lied to him and I never will. The baby I lost wasn't his, it was a...one off with a guy who wouldn't take no for an answer."
“Tell him as much or as little as you are comfortable with,” Mendez shrugged, little real interest either way. “And use the support available. Yet there were protocols, information he was required to pass along. Why wasn’t Dr Corrigan here for this?
“We have classes that are for you and other expecting parents, not all involve your partners. Safe spaces to talk and share. If nothing else it can let you talk about your aches and pains with people going through the same thing. And there will be people who have also had miscarriages in the past.”
Chrissy nodded. "I think that sounds wonderful. Sign me up!" She grinned. "I'm not afraid of joining in with other mums and dads, it will be fun."
“I’ll put the details on a PADD, just sign up for any you want,” he told her. “Doctor Kelley might recommend some after her first meeting with you.”
Christina nodded. "That's wonderful thank you." She offered him a warm smile. "Is there anything I need to look out for? What happened before just seemed to happen without warning, are there any warning signs I should be aware of?"
"Abdominal pains, bleeding... try to stay as stress free as possible, which I am sure is not easy in your line of work. Get plenty of rest, eat healthy and anything at all that worries you, drop in and Dr Kelley and her team can check it out for you," Mendez told her. "It is why we are here, after all."
“Thank you, I appreciate that.” Chrissy stood ready to leave. “If I have even the slightest worry I’ll be in touch. Thank you Doctor." Chrissy smiled warmly before heading on her way
