Mission:
Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD4, 0810 hours
During the night, the medical department had seemed to calm considerably. Most patients were now back home or in temporary accommodations- albeit many on the condition of attending follow up appointments either here or with the counselling department. Or both.
Technically arriving a good six hours before her shift was meant to start let Carolyn check in on the remaining patients still under the care of the medical staff. It also let her spend a rare time with Hope when the newborn wasn’t crying, being fed or sleeping.
And when all that was done she turned to her unofficial list and retreated to the medical labs. While perhaps not urgent in the medical sense, she knew it was important to Ariana. The results were in by 0500 hours, but Carolyn had hoped the woman was getting more sleep than she was and held off sending her a message until a more sensible hour.
Not sure when Ariana would come by she had replicated some cereal and orange juice, settling in to eat it when she heard someone approaching her office. With a mouthful of cereal already in her mouth, the doctor waved, gesturing for Ariana to come in.
Ariana smiled as she walked into Carolyn’s office, stifling a yawn as she took a seat. “Sorry! I’ve been awake since early this morning. A certain somebody..” She gestured to her bump. “Decided to start kicking and fidgeting early this morning!”
Sliding her bowl aside, not wanting to seem rude, Carolyn gestured to the replicator. “Can I get you anything?” She offered.
“No thank you” Ariana smiled as she shook her head. “I always eat before I leave my quarters or I end up dizzy and not feeling well. Lesson learned you could say! Please finish yours, don’t mind me being here.”
“Honestly it is fine, I ate way too much last night,” Carolyn assured her, accessing the lab work. “I ran the DNA test again this morning. Fortunately we have med students around so as far as our systems are concerned, it was just another of the simulations we run. Which means we didn’t place it on your medical file.”
Ariana nodded. “That’s appreciated thank you.” She rubbed her hands together nervously. “And the results?”
“So, as expected, the computer was telling you the truth,” she told Ariana. “The General is your biological father. Which I kind of hope is what you wanted to hear?”
She nodded enthusiastically. “You bet it is! When I was growing up I always wondered what my biological father was like, now I have chance to find out.” She grinned like a Cheshire Cat. “I appreciate your help Carolyn, thank you so much!!”
“You are welcome,” Carolyn grinned, “it was only some lab work, don’t worry about it.”
“I just feel like I’ve asked a lot of you lately. Between my pregnancy, the fever, this test it all feels like I’ve kept the medical staff more busy than I should have.”
“You are our top patient,” Carolyn teased. “Don’t worry about us, it is what we are here for.”
“Well I plan on making the rest of the time I have left easy on you, I’m going to rest like I’m supposed to and I plan not to have anymore trips to Sickbay for emergencies only for my routine appointments.” She grinned. “Can I....ask a somewhat embarrassing question?”
“Go for it,” Carolyn told her, taking a sip from her glass.
“Well you know I’m seeing Cameron. He and I have become very close, intimately so.” She blushed. “I’ve read it’s okay for pregnant women to make love but I just wanted a medical opinion to be sure.”
Carolyn set her glass down, almost choking on her drink. “Okay... to answer the question yes, it is okay. There are certain things to avoid, but I’ll send you the prenatal advice pack. It should set your mind at ease.”
Ariana grinned. “Sorry I didn’t mean to embarrass you!”
“Ha!” Carolyn laughed, “it was just unexpected. I’m happy for you. You’ve gone through a lot. Cameron seems to be good for you.”
“He’s....amazing!” Ariana smiled warmly. “He’s accepted the fact that the baby is his and he’s willing to look after both of us. I never thought I’d find another man who meant as much to me as Jonathon but Cameron is coming to mean a great deal to me!”
“Then I’ll keep fingers and toes crossed for you,” Carolyn promised, her words becoming incoherent as she yawned. Covering her mouth she waited for it to pass before offering an apologetic smile, “I am so sorry. That was rude. Long night.”
“No it’s okay! I plan on grabbing some extra sleep myself at some point. It’s easier for me to sleep when this little one is at rest.” Ariana grinned.
“Dr Reid shares your pain. I’ve promised to pick her up some Kava Root to help her backache later but there are rounds to do before then. And Freya is coming by. I take it you heard about the newborn?”
"I did hear something about it, yes " Ariana nodded. "I've avoided visiting due to not wanting to get attached. I'm afraid how I'd feel especially after losing my son."
“I’ve warned Freya about it, I’m not sure if this will be good for her or not,” Carolyn admitted.
“Well given everything that’s recently come to light for Frey, this distraction might prove to be good for her. Saying that it’s going to come all the harder when she has to say goodbye to the little one. I know how much she wants to have a baby.”
“Good thing she’ll have you and Kaden around to help,” Carolyn pointed out.
“We help each other.” Ariana smiled warmly. “We always have and always will. Don’t worry I’ll keep an eye on Frey.”
“Perfect,” Carolyn smiled. She looked like she was about to say something else but changed her mind, instead just asking, “while you are here, is there anything else you need?”
“No nothing else” Ariana smiled. “Was there something you wanted to say? You looked like you were going to say something.”
“Nothing important,” Carolyn assured her. “I should get a start on the rounds, Freya will be here soon.”
Ariana nodded. “In that case I’ll get going and let you get on." With that she headed on her way leaving Carolyn to get on with her rounds.
