835 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Episode 98 - A Raid on Peace
Location: Admiral T'Lar's Office
Timeline: MD1, 0900hrs

Once he'd left Tactical Operations and given orders to have the Engineering team assemble on board the Ark Royal, Jack made a quick detour to Deela's Office.

Despite being back a short time after the conference on Cardassia, knowing that he was going out again so soon made Jack realise he needed to see his beloved again for a moment.

He knew that Starfleet could assign its officers to missions at short notice and was well aware that it often did, but he wanted to make sure that she would be fine and that the kids would be ok.

Safe in the knowledge that the Ark Royal crew was already preparing to make sure that the Ambassador Class Starship was ready to launch, Jack pressed the door chime to her office and waited patiently outside.

Deela was waiting for everyone to depart. She wasn't expecting anyone so she was surprised when the chime rang, "Enter." She looked up to see who was walking in, "Aren't you supposed to be on the Ark Royal?"

Jack walked in and did his best not to smile as Deela asked him the first question he guessed that she would. "I'm on my way there now," he reassured her. "However, I wanted to stop by on the way out and check in quickly with you," he answered.

Walking over, Jack stood still before Deela's desk. "I know that we haven't seemed to catch a break with getting time together and I know that I'll be departing soon on the Ark Royal... I just... I just wanted to stop by and see if you're okay," he said, trying to find the right words as he tried to hide the small amount of apprehension he felt about the forthcoming mission.

"I am good which is surprising with everything that has happened." Lai'lira's death was hard on her and now Jack going on a mission. She looked at him, "You are not looking forward to this mission, are you?"

"Am I that easy to read?" he asked in return, knowing that the answer was already clear. "Sorry, no the truth is I'm not. I remember reading about the Remans activities during the Dominion War and that they were victorious in all of their engagements. I just want to make sure that I get this crew back in one piece and that I come back in one piece," he explained.

"After all, we have a wedding to prepare for, when there are a few quiet minutes," he added. "I was worried about you, you seemed a bit quiet of late and I was wondering if there was anything I could do?"

"No, not really. I am a little sad about Lai'lira. I really liked the girl. Her death was so sudden. I am still processing it all." She exhaled, "I will be fine. It will just take some time.

Deela got out of her chair and stood up, "As for you, I have every bit of confidence that you will be okay." A few years ago, she wouldn't have said it because of her bad history with fiancés and husbands.

Deela walked up to Jack, "Just watch out for the telepathic ones. Those ugly sons of bitches can invade a person's mind very easily."

Jack nodded as she reminded him of one of the Remans known abilities. "Duly noted, the last thing I need is having one of those invading my head," he confirmed. "I'll make sure to keep away from them where possible." He knew this wasn't going to be easy but he wanted to make sure Deela was ok with her recent experience and news.

"When I get back, do you want to take some time together with the kids? Maybe have some time on the holodeck as a family? I've missed you all of late and I want to make it up to you all," he offered. His thoughts were about Deela and the kids more than anything else, despite the mission ahead.

Deela smiled, "Looking forward to it. I am sure the kids will be excited to do something fun."

Jack smiled as Deela accepted the invite. He felt happier that would get to do something together when he returned. "Okay, okay thats great," he said. Looking at the chronometer on his wrist, Jack realised he was due on board the Ark Royal.

"Ok, I need to head off to make sure the Ark Royal is ready to go," he said. Pulling in close, Jack placed a gentle kiss on Deela's lips. "I love you," he whispered as he pulled away slowly.

"I love you too." She looked at Jack as if she was taking a mental picture of him, "You have a safe trip."

"I plan too," he said, waiting for a moment longer that he had to, taking in Deela's good looks. Then he smiled and winked at her before turning on his heel and headed out oh her office, making his way towards the Ark Royal.
