Chuck recalled the Generals words as he rallied to fulfill his orders. "Chuck, it is up to you, but I request that you bring along extra birds on your transports in each battle group. You know, just in case."
The birds were not the problem but lack of qualified pilots were, as recruitment had fallen lately. But Chuck was determined not to let his leader down.
" Lt Gunther report to the hanger deck pronto." Chuck ordered.
Since the alert had been initiated, Gunther had his squadron suit up, and their birds prepped for a sortie. He was in the squad briefing room when he heard the call. =/\=One my way, Major=/\=
Minutes later, he entered the fighter bay. It was full of activity with pilots, aircrew, and support crews alike. He looked around for the CAG.
Motioning for Gunther, the Major began.
" Klaus we have our orders from, the General. It reads :McDaniel- The air wing has been assigned two transports, each capable of carrying at least squadron. I am requesting from you an air transport to accompany each group. "
Chuck paused, recallingJackson's orders. " Major McDaniel, when the fleet goes on impulse, I will order you to launch birds to Tarod IX. There are sensor jammers on the surface, so we will need eyeballs to evaluate the outpost and any potential hostiles. If no major threat is evident, you can send us the green light to conduct our operations. And I will need you to provide a system-wide CAP. Your call on who, and how many."
" Klaus I know your record and I want you to take transport 34 and I'll escort 35. The rondavoux coordinates will be relayed prior to departure. We will not leave together. I have seen enough star wars movies to know that is a bad idea. We will arrive at different vextors to keep their sensors busy. Any questions?"
"Sir, who does the surface flyover, as well as covering the troops, and who flies the system CAP? And what are the rules of engagement?"
" We will reach the target in 4 hours. Have your squad do the recon of the surface. As for the rules of engagement, until further orders here are mine. Rule #1: You were not at fault. Rule #2: You believe you were in danger of imminent death or great bodily harm. Rule #3: You have not violated any opportunity to retreat or avoid the danger if you can in the first place. Rule #4: You have exhausted all other means to avoid the use of deadly force.
Of course I will have those orders before we arrive" Chuck replied.
"Understood, Sir. I have no other questions. You be careful with your CAP.", Klaus said.
The lieutenant posed many questions to Chuck requiring answers he didn't have. Perhaps he was green again, having just defended Bajor from the Dominion all these years.
Walking away from the lieutenant he tapped his comm badge to hail the General for those answers.
" Major McDaniel to Major General Jackson. "
=/\=Jackson here=/\=
" Sir requesting confirmation of orders. Who flies the CAP and what are our rules of engagement for this operation? I have as Lt Kraus Gunther to step up and do the fly over." Chuck asked.
=/\=Major, it is up to you whose squadron does the system wide CAPs, and whose squadron does the fly over, and provide cover for the landing force.
Any ships entering the system will receive a verbal challenge to determine intent. As for the ROE, if your pilots encounter any aggressive act directed at them, the landing force, facility, or fleet, you are weapons free. We will not lose any pilots because of any possible political belly aching."
Chuck smiled to himself.
" Thank you for clarification sir... McDaniel out."
Chuck returned to Klaus and the other pilots assembled with a clearer understanding of their orders.
" Once over our target two squads will act as cover for ground troops. Once frigates 34 and 35 are in place my squad will cover the CAP and Lt Gunther will cover our ground forces. When the word is given we will dock, refuel and each squad leader will assign three fighters per direction and perimeter to patrol. The ROE is basic defend our stuff and if fired upon fire back weapons free. Any questions?" the Major asked.
The pilots of both squadrons just smiled in silence, including Gunther.
" I expect all of you to make it both there and back in one piece. Lets kick some Reman ass."
All the pilots sounded off, "RAH!". Klaus looked at his pilots. "Okay Specters, get in your birds, and head for the Kearsarge." Klause looked at his CAG, and the other squadron. "Good hunting!"
Klaus got into his ship. Wizzard was already in the back seat, completing her preflight. "Button her up Wiz." The canopy came down, and Klaus could feel changes in his ears, as both his flight suit, and cockpit pressurized. He could hear and feel his ship come to life as he powered up his reactor. Once he got clearance, his ship gently lifted off, and slowly exited the flight bay, followed by the rest of his squadron.
