You got this....
Taking a deep breath, Chloe Winters took the final few steps that would lead into Sickbay. Confidence, her father always said, was key. And until she actually crossed that threshold she was. Excellence was a common theme throughout her studies. An excellent student. But that was in the safety of a lab, or a lecture hall or exam room.
"Are you alright?" a passing nurse asked, stopping in her tracks to help the newest visitor. When she didn't get an answer, she tried again. And again. In fact, she was about to call on Dr Hades when the visitor finally found her voice.
"I... I'm fine. I'm looking for Dr Hades?"
The nurse smiled, "most people think that. I'm sure anyone would be able to help you. What seems to be the problem?"
Chloe frowned. "I am not a patient," she clarified, "I'm a doctor. Well, kind of. I'm Cadet Winters. I'm a medical student?"
"You don't sound so sure of that," the nurse observed with a small laugh. She eyed the new arrival with a more critical eye. Clearly trying to weigh up in that one look if she was up to the challenge. "Isn't this the wrong time of year for med students?"
"I'm a glutten for punishment I guess," Chloe sighed. She didn't really want to go into details. "Can you point me to Dr Hades office please? The computer said he was there."
With a barely audible sigh the nurse turned, heading back the way she had come and gesturing for Chloe to follow. "Dr Hades, you have a visitor."
Hades popped out of the office. He'd ben reviewing his appointments for the day. Looking down at the young woman standing next to one of his nurses. "Hello, How can I help you?"
“I’m your new med student. Chloe Winters ... didn’t anyone say I was coming?” She asked, looking unsure.
It took him a moment. "Oh yes, come to the office. I have a welcome package for you prepared. I trust you have settled in?"
Chloe sighed with relief before hurrying to catch up with him. "Yes, sir. I have family on the station so they've made me feel right at home. I did consider coming by yesterday to introduce myself but everyone just got back to the station so I thought it best to wait until this morning."
"No problem at all." He said as they entered his office. He motioned for the chair across him. "Can I get you something to drink?"
"No, thank you. I'm good," she said, looking around her as she sat down on the edge of the seat.
He smiled a bit as he got his fifth coffee of the day. "You can relax Cadet. We don't bite here...well maybe some of the nurses but that's being handled."
Chloe swallowed hard, her eyes went wide.
The look on her face made him have to supress a chuckle. "It's alright I was just joking you know."
"Oh, right," she mumbled, looking like she'd quite like to find somewhere to go and throw up.
He smiled, "Relax cadet. You will love it here." He stood. "Come on you can come with me on rounds."
“Yes doctor,” she said, jumping up out of her seat. In her haste she lost her balance, knocking a pile off PADDs off his desk. With an embarrassed ‘sorry’ she ducked down to pick them up.
He smiled shaking his head he helped her pick up the PADDs. "It's all right. Leave the PADDs let's walk." They left his office and headed to the ward where long term patients lay. "So Cadet, why medicine." He hoped that small talk with put her at ease. He remembered how nervous he was when he was in her spot.
“I remember all the care my grandma got when I was little and I decided then, this is what I want to do. Help people.”
"Good. Then you are in the right profession. Being a doctor is more then just healing someone. We heal the body but also we must show compassion to the heart and mind and soul of the patient." He stopped at a medical replicator and taped a few commands. Two glasses of pink liquid appeared. He handed her one and drank the other. "Drink that down quick."
Chloe took the drink, looking unsure but following his instruction and downing the drink in one go. It tasted vile! “What is this?” She asked as she set down the empty glass.
He grinned, "Protection from Mrs. Gordon." He said cryptically and entered the ward. Almost as soon as they were inside a little old lady wobbled to them. "Doctor! Martin is looking much better."
Hades smiled. He walked over to the old man to the right and picked up a data PADD. "I can see that. If he continues to improve he can go home. The hip replacement took well." He turned to the new Cadet. "This is Mister Martin Gordon. His bones were beyond healing. We did a replacement."
Just then Mrs. Gordon pulled out a container. "I made your favourite cookies!"
He grinned, "You do not have to do that."
"I insist." She offered him one and then the Cadet. "Hello young lady. Would you like a cookie! They are chocolate chip!"
Hades smiled, "Go ahead Cadet."
“Okay,” Chloe said, reaching for one of the cookies. She took a tentative bit, the taste as vile as the drink Hades gave her. She looked at Hades, realisation dawning on her. “Oh, it was because of these!”
Mrs. Gordon looked at doctor Hades. "She just means that I told her she had to drink milk. You cannot have your delicious cookies without milk." The old lady smiled,
"Ohhh of course!" She shoved the rest of the cookies at the Cadet. "Well now that I know you like them I'll make double."
Hades smiled, "And we shall look forward to them." He hurried the Cadet along. "Let's go."
As he ushered her away, Chloe stared at the cookies. “How can chocolate cookies be so evil?”
He smiled, "Well they can be. That drink will assure your stomach is not upset. Giving us cookies makes her happy. Her happy makes our patient happy and thus he is relaxed to let healing happen."
“Makes sense,” Chloe murmored, pointing to the cookies, “what do we do with these now?”
He grinned, "One man's horrible vile tasting dish is another's favourite food." He rounded the corner and was greeted by a Nausiccan. "Doctor. I am able to move my arm."
Hades gave a nod. "Excellent." He handed the Cadet a tricorder. "Severed arm, reattached and the nerves are they healing?" He'd let her scan.
Opening the tricorder she entered a command and it beeped angrily at her. Realising her mistake she tried again, breathing an inner sigh of relief as the scan initated. As it worked she looked at the Nausiccan, curiousity getting the better of her. "Erm... how did it become... unattached in the first place?"
He laughed "A good fight."
Hades smiled, "Yes well while my Cadet scans your nerve endings here are some cookies."
The Nausiccan smiled, "Ahhhhh food of the gods!"
Hades gave the Cadet a wink. "If you say so."
Chloe stared, open mouthed as the Nausiccan devoured the cookies. She looked down as the tricorder bleeped, looking at the readings. "All readings are within expected range," she reported.
"Good." Hades said. "A few more days of rest and those cookies and you will be well."
The Nausiccan devoured the cookies, "I might stay longer if you keep bringing me these gems," he said while chomping on the cookies.
Feeling ill just watching him eat, Chloe looked at Hades. "Next patient?" she asked hopefully.
He laughed, "Absolutely!" He looked at her, "You are getting the hang of it Cadet."
Grateful, Chloe followed him away from the hungry Nausiccan. "This is very different to a starship," she commented, watching nurses and technicians coming and going. "How do you keep on top of it all? The medical facilities on this base alone are mind boggling."
He smiled, "I felt a lot like you did when I first came. It takes a lot of great people and a lot of paperwork. Trust me you will love it."
As the came to the bedside of the next patient, a teenage boy, Chloe opened her mouth to say hello when the boy rolled towards her and threw up all over her uniform. “Yeah, loving it already,” Chloe deadpanned.
Hades smiled, "This is Timothy Kanobi." He picked up a hypo and injected the boy. "Aright, all good. Mr. Kanobi you are getting better. I know it doesn't seem like it but the throw up is great! It's cleaning your system. Maybe now you'll be careful what you eat young man."
He turned to the Cadet. "Why don't you go change and then meet me in the OR wing and I'll give you a tour."
“Yes, Doctor,” she said, turning on her heels and hurrying away. One of the nurses offered a knowing yet sympathetic smile as she stepped in front of the cadet and, putting her hands on the young woman’s shoulders, turned her around and pointed her at the door, telling her the code she’d need to enter. First some clean clothes and then she’d find the OR ...
