Episode 96 - A Visitor From the Past
Location: XO's Office, Starbase 400
Timeline: MD 01 1400 hours
ON:
Rol hadn't slept all night. He was damned if this thing with Hades and Braxton didn't bother him. He had made the decision, about half past three in the morning, that he was going to talk to the XO. He was determined to get to the bottom of this. He knew he might have to go to Braxton's CO for the files but maybe the XO might be able to get them before he was forced to do that. Marines were less tolerant of free thinking.
He stood outside the woman's office and rang the chime.
Deela had been catching up on work. She heard the chime and called out, Enter."
Rol entered the office and was struck by now neat and nice it was. "Hello. I'm counselor Rol. I'm covering for Counselor Monroe until she is better. Do you have a moment ma'am?" The issue he had to discuss was rather sensitive and he hoped that she had some time.
"Yes, I do. How can I help you?" Deela motioned to a chair for him to sit.
Rol sat down. He thought a moment. "I have a bit of an unorthodox request." He started choosing his words. "I need to ... see a file from one of the Marines on the station."
Deela sat there quietly for a moment, "You do?" She leaned back into her chair, "May I ask who and why you need this file?"
He sighed, "Braxton. I'm looking for something, I honestly don't know what but after speaking with him as a counselor I believe that there is something in that record that is hidden even from him. It may not be there but I have reason to believe he has been the victim of something known as Kae' Klotau." The words in Vulcan literally translated to mind blocking. It was an ancient technique known by few and forbidden on Vulcan.
Deela pushed a few PADDs around and handed him a PADD on Braxton, "Here you go." She had pulled it when Lai'lira brought it to her attention, "I have not had a chance to look at it but when Lai'lira brought it to my attention, I decided to look into it myself."
"Rol accepted the PADD. "This will take forever. May I make a suggestion as a counselor? Perhaps we should ask his CO to take him off duty until we figure this out." He started reviewing the PADD. Noting he XO's heritage. "How familiar are you with the Kae'Klotau?"
"Very. It should not be a problem to take him off duty." Deela leaned forward, "If he is victim of the Kae' Klotau, what do you plan to do?"
He sighed, "I need to talk to Hades first. He's part Vulcan but as you know we need a powerful Vulcan telepath to break the block. I'll also need access to the files from his former Marine placement and all of his placements. Duty wise he seems fine but being pulled off duty might be best. Admiral I have heard that your telepathic abilities are...extraordinary. Have you ever broken through the Kae'Klatau?" It was a risky procedure, one that would take the Vulcan who performed it into Braxton's mind to the event that was blocked or the memories that were supressed. It would have an effect on both Braxton and whom ever performed the procedure. It carried many risks for both." He rubbed the bridge of his nose a nervous gesture.
Deela exhaled, "I have not but...I would be willing to try. I would have to really dig down deep into his mind. But he would have to give me permission to do so. I do not believe in invading a person's mind without it." She doubted if he would do so.
"Then I guess my job is to convince him he should. Shall we dive into the files." He wondered if he could find something.
"Okay." Deela looked over the information in front of her, "I see that he and his wife were on the SS Ira which suffered a catastrophic instrument failure and a warp core breach. His wife never made it off the ship and he had to watch it explode with his wife still on it. And this in turn, changed him for the worse."
Rol was reading up on those files himself. "Yes...but...something doesn't add up here." He stood and shifted closer to the XO pulling the PADD along with him. "Statements were taken after the incident for an investigation. It seems the instrument failure was no accident it was the CO who triggered it." The man got off the ship and was caught shortly after. He was still in a max Starfleet prison. "Look here several people report Braxton helping them to a shuttle pod but Braxton's statement was that he was on the bridge and then woke in a shuttle, the XO...he also says that Braxton was knocked out on the bridge by a fallen beam but..." Rol pointed to the PADD. "Medically... it doesn't add up his injuries ...they don't add up." Rol sat back and sighed. "Something doesn't add up, either the XO is lying through his teeth or the witnesses that place Braxton on various decks helping them into pods are not being honest and there are more witnesses that report seeing him on various decks. Something doesn't add up." He was truly frustrated by this.
"No, it does not." Deela was slightly frustrated because she couldn't solve this.
Rol stood up and paced. "I'm lost. I don't know where to start with this." He didn't like things that didn't add up. He hated them in fact. "How do we tackle this?" He asked wanting someone's advice. He'd been thinking about it but wasn't convinced his method was right.
"I would tend to believe the others over the XO. We could re-open the case...talk to the XO again, that is if you think it would help. If not, then you should go ahead with your plan to delve into his mind and find out what was blocked from his memories. You would have to have proof that someone do this to him."
"Let's start with the XO." He flipped to the name of the XO on file and then grinned. "Oh by the Gods. Fate has brought us a gift." He tapped a few buttons and then handed the PADD to the Admiral, "As it were he's here on conference. I don't think he'd take kindly to someone of lower rank questioning him how do you feel about a little good cop, bad cop?" A phrase he'd learned while on Earth.
Deela understood what he was referring to but she had another idea, "Why do that at all? I can question him and I will be able to tell if he is lying. I out rank him by a mile so he is not going to fight me."
Rol chuckled, "Well Admirals have all the fun." He gave a wink. "Alright how about I send him your way and in the mean time I will talk to Braxton. So far he's resistant but I am slowly getting through to him with certain things."
She nodded, "Sounds like a plan."
Rol stood up. "Alright, I will go send him your way." He shook his head, "Admiral, I know things are busy with the enterprise being here and all. I really appreciate you taking the time in this matter." He really was grateful for any and all help he got.
Roll looked at her and smiled, "Well ma'am. I am off to get the ball rolling." She looked at her. "I really do appreciate your help on this."
Deela returned the smile, "Glad I could help."
