Ironing

279 words; about a 1 minute read

Mission: Mission 76 - Home comings
Location: USS Vanguard, Engineering
Timeline: Current

Dry air pumped and hummed with the sounds of machinery in motion as Tanner stood silhouetted in the blue-green glow, leaning forward, hand hovering over the handle sticking out at her hip.

One step. Listening closely, she heard the fluttering beep from a nearby console that meant her opponent was taking paces as well.

Another step. And the tell-tale whine that'd grated on her nerves for the last hour had Tanner pressing her lips together. "I've had just about enough of you, you yellow-bellied fiend from--"

Taking one last step forward, Tanner's fingers closed around the hilt of the spanner tucked into her pocket and pulled it out with the deft efficiency of a practiced gunslinger whipping out his pistol.

The Vanguard's engine room bore little resemblance to a dusty western desert, and Tanner, standing all of five feet and four inches, wearing the gold uniform of Starfleet engineering would hardly be mistaken for any kind of sheriff, but the rolling bleep that indicated a fluctuation in the power feed was just as unwanted as a rogue drifter come to take advantage of their small....ship.

Not so small, really. The sovereign class Vanguard was notably larger than Tanner's previous post. And the warp core more powerful than either of the dual cores that'd been on the eaves class New Jersey. Hence the fluctuations.

Knowing how to smooth out the energy burst wasn't much of a problem, now that she'd figured out what was causing it. All it would take was an adjustment to the regulating setup and a basic switch shift. The problem was figuring out how and where to switch the power over without overloading the system.
