Mission:
Episode 92 - More Questions than Answers
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: The Day after the Pegasus/Hattori battle
ON:
The heavily damaged Stardrive Section of the USS Pegasus-B slowly limped into Starbase 400’s internal docking bay after having been towed back by a Starfleet tug, and escorted by the USS Voyager.
Mike knew he didn’t have a lot of time before he’d be off to Earth to answer questions surrounding his escape from custody and battle with his Mirror Universe duplicate. Still, there were things he needed to do aboard the station before leaving again.
First he wanted to see his wife and let her know he was okay, and to see his youngest son. Next was to make sure his duplicate was safely locked away in his cell in the Maximum Security Brig, again. Then, to make sure his crew were all back aboard the station and receiving whatever treatment or rest they needed. Next would be to talk with Admiral T’Lar and Fleet Admiral Sevlek. Mike knew T’Lar would be in full support of his actions, Sevlek would be another matter. Would he issue some kind of discipline of his own or wait to see what Fleet Admiral Akaar issued first?
Mike knew he’d be going to Earth aboard Voyager, a ship he’d visited before, but it would honored to be aboard again...even in this situation. Mike had also already advised Commander Roebuck to have the USS Laffey ready to depart with Chief Branson, First Ramata’tar, and a team from the 1st MARSOC Group lead by Master Sergeant Atlee Micklin. Mike didn’t want to give the impression of guilt or that he was going to Earth with ‘all guns blazing’, but having a small Marine escort wouldn’t hurt. Besides, Mike was also planning to take Janice and Christopher aboard Voyager and while he was meeting with Fleet Admiral Akaar, they would be at their house on the shores of Lake Murray in South Carolina. They didn’t get to Earth as often as they wanted and they would take advantage of the situation. Having the Laffey there also meant a ride home when they were ready.
As the Pegasus docked in her usual berth, Work Bees and Pods started to swarm around the ship assessing damage to her outer hull while damage control and repair teams rushed aboard via one of her access ways while the crew disembarked through the other. At the same Voyager was docking at one of the open bays.
Standing at the docking port was Janice. She saw Mike walking down the long access way and she took off running to meet him. Jumping into his arms she gave him a big hug and a kiss. After the embrace she saw Mike’s duplicate just behind him, and without hesitation she hauled off and punched him in the face rebreaking his nose. Blood ran down his face as he smirked. Janice then saw Commander Cobb standing behind him and she slapped him in the face.
Cobb stumbled as he rubbed his face, “I...I guess I deserve that.”
Mike grabbed Janice around the waist, “Okay, that’s enough. Cobb’s motioned to have the charges against me dropped and says he’ll even speak on my behalf.”
Janice still had her angry face on and stared down the JAG officer for a moment before turning away.
“I’m going escort him”, Mike motioned toward his duplicate “and Pike’s mirror universe duplicate to the Brig. Once they’re secure I’ll meet you in our quarters. Have a bag packed for yourself and Christopher, you’re going to Earth with me aboard Voyager.”
A few minutes later, in the Maximum Security Brig, the Mirror Universe Bremer was moved into his old cell while the Mirror Universe Pike was put into a cell as well. Both were activated and security guards posted. Bremer stood there for a moment watching his duplicate take a set on his bed, looking around, and laying down. He didn’t say a word and after a few moments Mike walked off and headed for Ops.
In the turbolift, K’Temoc looked over a PADD he’d been given while Mike was in the brig. “Everyone has disembarked from the Pegasus. McMichaels, Pike, Lokran, and the other wounded and injured are in Station's Sick Bay. I’ve sent a message to Doctor Thr'elanon to let you, Deela, and myself know their condition as soon as possible. Repair teams say it’ll be six to nine months before the Pegasus is space worthy again, that includes repairing all damages and completing a new saucer section and integrated it. They did promise to work around the clock and double shifts as their work load allows.”
Mike nodded, he was thankful they would be putting so much effort into the job. There were other ships assigned to Starbase 400 he could use as needed. The Laffey, Durga, Venator, Vanguard to name a few, but none were ‘his’ ship, none were the Pegasus.
“They say if we’d taken another few torpedo hits, we’d be looking at the Pegasus-C in a year or so instead of repairing the ‘B’”. K’Temoc added.
Mike nodded again, he’d thought about that too...and the thought bothered him. He took the PADD from his brother and tapped in a few notes and commands. “Send this to the yard staff.”
K’Temoc looked over the notes then smirked. “Will do.” He shut off the PADD, "How's your hand?"
"Sore, healing." Mike looked at the bandage, "I have some physical therapy, but it should be fine. I'll have a scar, I'm sure my duplicate would smile about that."
A few moments later, Mike stepped into Ops. There were a few Officers on duty while Fleet Admiral Sevlek, Admiral T’Lar, Vice Admiral Janeway, Major General Hurd, and Captain Chakotay were beside the holographic display in the middle of the large room. Mike and K’Temoc walked over.
“Jewel, congratulations on your promotion. Fleet Admiral Tidwell is getting a good Task Force Commander, but that doesn’t mean you can slack on your duties here.” Mike said with a smirk.
She couldn't help but smile, "Thanks Mike." Jewel replied then looked at K'Temoc and smiled since he would be her Task Force Executive Officer.
K'Temoc nodded and smiled at Jewel, "When you have time, we should talk about Ninty-Nine."
Mike then looked around at Janeway, T’Lar, and Sevlek. “Prisoner 001 is back where he belongs, and Prisoner 003 is also in his cell. The Pegasus is secured and work has already begun. Our wounded are in Sick Bay. General Jackson is debriefing Colonel Hurd and the Marines that were a part of the raid on the base. Commander Roebuck has the USS Laffey ready and will follow Voyager to Earth, I’ll go aboard Voyager. All data we recovered has been transferred to Voyager and copies have been sent to you all as well as Starfleet Command. Admiral Mendek has been arrested, and Starfleet Security also found more information linking him to Section 31 as well as the attacks on the Cardassians and use of Mirror Universe personnel during their sweep of his personal residence.” Mike reported to everyone.
“Voyager will be ready to depart in twenty minutes. We’ve transferred your wounded we had aboard, as well as prisoners that were taken into custody to Starbase 400 already.” Chakotay added.
“Fleet Admiral Akaar has scheduled the official meeting with you for 0930 hours tomorrow morning. He’s already received all data you uncovered as well as the Cardassians’ reports and Commander Cobb’s report and his official motion to have charges against you dropped for the murder of Legit Doran and destruction of his ship.” Janeway added.
Deela listened to the conversations and nodded once in a while. In the back of her mind, she hated the fact that he had to go to Earth and give testimony by himself when she knew she was involved with his escape as well. But this is what he wanted even though she disagreed with it.
Sevlek looked at his friend directly, "When you return, we will have a discussion concerning your methods."
Mike wanted to smirk, but it wasn't the time or the place. Instead, he gave a respectful nod. "Understood." Mike then wondered if Sevlek would be planning to follow him to Earth aboard the Gladiator and be apart of the meetings with Akaar. Sevlek was Vulcan, but sometimes he would be as sneaky as a Romulan.
Marine Country-MARSOC CP
Master Sergeant Atlee Micklin thought that he was going to have a routine day when he walked into the MARSOC Command Post, but this was about to change. "Hey Mick," said Giaus from his desk, holding a PADD, "I have a Warning Order for you."
The grin on Aquila's face worried Mick. "What have you gotten my team into this time Chief?" Giaus thought Mick needed a break, and a trip to Earth just might be the ticket. "Report to the USS Laffey with your team. Your team will be providing VIP Escort for Admiral Bremer on his trip to Star Fleet HQ on Earth. Since we don't want to scare those wine and tea sippers on Earth, I want you and your team to be in Class B uniforms with sidearms only when engaged on planet side security, BUT, you may bring and keep your battle rattle on the Laffey, you know, just in case. Make sure they wear their MARSOC wings on their uniforms, loud and proud." They both grinned, knowing this would at least convey the message "Really, just don't" to anyone they encountered. "You heard the scuttlebutt about what has been going on, so keep your heads on a swivel." Mick gave the Chief a nod, "Sure thing Chief." Giaus yelled one more thing as Mick was exiting the office, "And for gods' sake, make sure your team shaves."
Ops
Mike finished up some last minute notes for Deela and handed her a PADD. "While on Earth I'm going home, I think it'll help Janice and myself after all this mess, but I hope to be back here within a week. If Starfleet Command allows it anyway." He flashed a smirk.
"They had better or they will have to deal with me." Deela meant what she said, "Good luck. Once you have been officially cleared, enjoy your time with your wife. You both deserve it."
Mike smiled, "Thank you. The Station is yours."
As he turned to leave, Roebuck and Dow stepped out of the turbolift.
Dow was the first to speak, "I heard about what happened and that you're going to Earth. Things down on Kalab IV are quiet, so I'd like to go with you. I've already told Governor Agard I'd be away and Commander Pierce is capable of handling anything that arises Starfleet related.
Roebuck then added, "I have no problem riding shotgun and letting Captain Dow command the Laffey."
Mike thought for a moment. "Pat, you've got the Laffey. Jonathan, stay on the Station. With Commander Lokran still recovering from his wounds and Lieutenant Baratan still on Leave he might need another experienced Security Officer." Mike made sure Deela heard the change in orders. "Alright Pat, let's go."
In the turbolift Dow turned to Bremer, “If the charges against you have been dropped, why are you still being summoned to Earth?”
“I did break out of custody, kidnap a JAG Officer technically, and conduct an unauthorized investigation. I’m sure to Fleet Admiral Akaar, the ends didn’t justify the means.” Mike replied.
“You don’t think he’ll take your command do you?” Dow asked.
“I’m not sure what to expect. I’ve only met him twice.” Mike replied.
A few minutes later the Starship Voyager backed away from her docking bay, turned and headed out. Janice and Christopher were shown to their quarters for the quick four hour slipstream flight to Earth while Bremer was on the Bridge. He watched as Voyager passed the Pegasus. Engineers were already working to remove the damaged nacelles.
A moment after Voyager undocked, the Defiant class USS Laffey also backed away from her docking bay, turned, and headed out. In the center seat was Captain Dow. First Ramata’tar was at Tactical, Chief Branson at Flight Control, and Lieutenant Quan at Engineering/Ops.
After a few minutes at impulse, both ships blasted off into Slipstream.
