Re-calibrations and tweaks take time and especially when you're a perfectionist. It seemed Croesus had become one of late though he never knew he was one until recently. Joined by the more than capable assist of Lt Takabe, their work load was becoming smaller and smaller.
" So L.T. what's next on our itinerary? " Croesus smiled. Remembering that this was all new for him and that these officers were not aware of his charisma and general personality.
"We have to realign a communication antenna." Nuala told him.
Stepping forward Croesus and his little case of diagnostic tools moved to the next fix me project.
"To be honest, I'm not enthusiastic about this work. I want to get back out into space." Takabe told Croesus.
Croesus smiled, " Takabe your one after my own heart. When were done here let's go back to 400 and share some tall tales."Croesus asked her.
Nuala giggled. "I wouldn't have much to tell. My last assignment was stuck on a research station mostly doing what I am doing now."
Croesus paused and then looked around. He had misplaced his sonic resonator tool and had became quite fond of it as it got his hand. Cursing under breath as he inventoried the little case inside and out.
" You'll have to save me a seat I seem to have lost one of my tools." Croesus declared.
"Are you looking for this?" Jack offered as he held up the sonic resonator tool in front of them both. He recognized Lt Takabe straight away straight away, but the other officer was new to him. "Lt Takabe, always a pleasure to see you, I hope your well?" Jack asked.
Jack handed over the tool to him. "I'm Lt Cmdr Jack Solomon, Chief Engineer on 400," he said introducing himself. Work was progressing well on the Ashalla with Lt. Boone in charge so Jack had decided to move across to help out with the Princeton.
Croesus extended his left hand to shake Solomon's, surprised by the added company.
"We seem to have completed the items on the work order requisition. Are you aware of any other issues needing attention Chief?" Croesus asked
Jack checked the updated list of items on the small Engineering PADD he had brought with him and could almost all of the work was completed. "You guys have been busy! I can see there needs to be a re-calibration of the lateral sensor array, but that's a minor thing I can handle from the Bridge Science Station," he explained as he read further down the list.
"Ah, here's one, the Portside Auxiliary Deflector Shield Generator needs to be re-aligned... want to flip a coin?" Jack offered.
Crosesus extended a gold pressed latinum coin with an engraved image of the grand nagus on it. Many years ago he had been on a mission to Ferenginar, and following the end of the mission had been flipped one of these by the leader.
"I call heads." Croesus smiled. As a former science officer he was forever realigning reflectors or something.
"Ah, life in Star Fleet." Takabe stated. "You join to see the universe but spend your time realigning the deflector shields."
Jack smiled at Takabe's statement. "Some days you're exploring the galaxy, some days you're defending the borders from the enemy...Other days, your re-aligning sensors..." he said, watching as Croesus flipped his coin. Jack smirked as the coin landed. "Tails it is. I'll go and get started on those Shield Generators..."
Retrieving the coin Lt Commander Croesus put his tools to case and headed back to the Starbase to call it a day. Of course there were after action logs to fill but by 1900 he hoped to be settled into his second bottle of an adult beverage listening to an uploaded Klingon opera.
Experience had taught him many things and one was to live in the moment and so he did as he passed through the Princeton's bowels. Every ship was special and every ship had a story. Croesus paused to consider the Princeton's. Exiting the airlock, the new familiarity to Starbase 400 returned as he headed up to operations to make report to his Chief.
Tapping his comm badge he called Lt Takabe.
" L.T. thanks for helping me today. Hope we can work together again some time ? "
"It was no problem at all." Takabe replied. "I'll look forward to working with you again Commander."
Croesus was pleased to have completed this job and also make a new set of friends. Tomorrow was a good day to live for.
