Mission:
Mission 76 - Home comings
Location: Earth, South Carolina, Bremer's house on Lake Murray
Timeline: An hour after the meeting at Starfleet Command
ON:
Mike and Janice had left the meeting at Starfleet Command and had the Pegasus beam them to their house on the banks of Lake Murray, near Mike's birth place of Lexington South Carolina. The house had been in Mike's family for over a hundred years. The lake front home was three stories tall, and featured a dock on the water, shuttle landing padd, offices for Mike and Janice, a play room for the kids, open and enclosed patios and porch, rooms for each of their kids, and two guest rooms. Off to the side was a small family cemetery. Buried there was Mike's mother, his grandparents, and great-grandparents.
Even when Mike was back on Earth, he rarely stayed in the house, choosing to stay aboard ship. It wasn't that he didn't like the house, but after his brief retirement in 2380 that ended when he was recalled to Starfleet in 2381 during the Borg invasion, deep down he was worried he would get too comfortable there again and want to re-retire from Starfleet.
Today was different though, and for some reason he wanted to be there. While Janice was in her office talking to their children aboard Starbase 400 that she hadn't seen in weeks, Mike headed for his Officer to check on reports from the Pegasus and Starbase 400.
One message quickly got his attention. It was from Chief Wright. The long serving Command Master Chief of Starbase 400 wanted to meet with the Admiral to discuss a `position change`. Mike wasn't sure what Bryant had in mind, but he knew he was aboard the Yorktown.
Mike tapped his comm-badge. "Bremer to Yorktown."
"Yorktown, Master Chief Wright here sir." Came the quick reply.
"Chief, just the man I wanted to talk to. Are you busy at the moment?"
" Nothing that couldn't be paused, Admiral " Wright answered the Admiral.
"Very good. I'd like for you to beam down to my location, we'll talk here. Also, have Petty Officer O'Reily along. If you do decide to transfer to a new position, I'd like someone with experience to take over as the Station's Command Master Chief." Mike paused for a moment. "Beam down when you're ready, Bremer out."
Mike closed the comm-channel and awaited for their arrival.
Wright sighed, now was the time for the truth, to see if the wheels that he put into motion would lead to his eventual goal or just get him embarrassed. To say that he was a little apprehensive would be an under statement he hadn't felt this nervous since combat which was silly to him. But, he had made his choice about leaving the NCO core, and now was the time to back it up. Wright tapped on his comm badge.
" Petty Officer O'Reily, I need for you to meet me in the transporter room. We're to beam down to the surface to meet with Admiral Bremer about what we discussed earlier. " Wright spoke into the air, knowing that the computer was transmitting it all to O'Reily.
Hugh was just about to enter the hatch to his bunk when the call came threw. "Aye aye, Master Chief. On my way." He looked at his PADD, filled with the reports and procedures he would have to memorize as the station quartermaster on Starbase 400. "Don't worry. You and me will get to know each other quite well." He turned around, and hot footed toward the transporter room.
Wright tapped his comm badge to close the channel and headed off to the transporter room. He was now ready to make the next step in his journey in Starfleet, and now that the first steps where underway, he was already calming down.
Several minutes later, two men beamed directly into Mike's Office at his home on Earth. The large room had one large display screen that was currently offline, flanked by two smaller screens on each side. One screen showed a tactical overlay of the Sol system, another showed the Pegasus, Yorktown, Avenger, and Venator's orbit paths. The remaining two were also offline. His desk was extremely clean, free of clutter...mainly because Mike hadn't been there in a long time. A few family pictures, desk top screen, and two PADDs were all that was there.
Mike stood as the men appeared. "Thank you both for coming. Welcome to my home, I hope neither of you mind the informal nature of the meeting location."
Mike picked up one of the PADDs, "Chief, you've mentioned that you're interested in a commission. With your service record and service to SB400 and me, I hereby grant you a field promotion to Lieutenant Commander, with the position of Training Officer. You'll help train new officers and enlisted personnel aboard the station. You'll also command the USS Tirpitz during training cruises and crisis situations. Do you accept this charge?
Wright tried not to look completely stunned by the Admiral's announcement. It was what he had wanted for sure, but now how did he ever think that it would be this...easy. To top it off, a command right off the cuff, amazing.
" Of course Admiral, I shall endeavor to prove that your confidences is well placed in me. I accept Sir. " Wright replied.
"Petty Officer O`Reily." Mike looked at his newest crewmember "With Mister Bryant's promotion, that leaves the position of Command Master Chief open. Your Starfleet record is exemplary and you have the knowledge and experience we need. I'd like to offer you the position of Command Master Chief aboard Starbase 400 with the promotion of Chief Petty Officer." Bremer leaned back in his chair and awaited the reply.
Inside, O'Reily felt pride for what he had done in Starfleet. His career had a lot of ups and downs, but he always kept his nose to the grindstone. And to have someone like Admiral Bremer--who's exploits were well known threw out the Federation and beyond--recognize O'Reily enough to promote him to the Command Master Chief position made working threw all the doubt...all the pain, a little more worth it.
Though he felt like grinning and pumping his fist in the air, O'Reily had been in Starfleet long enough to keep his cool and wise enough to keep discipline. His face was stony calm, expression unchanging.
"Sir, it would be an honor. Thank you." he said with an even tone.
Bremer smiled and stood, extending a hand to O`Reily and then Bryant. "Congratulations to you both. I know this may seem like a lot all at once and a weight on your shoulders, but I know you both are more than capable. I would like you both to remain assigned to the Yorktown until we return to Starbase 400. Until then, enjoy your shore leave."
As the two men left and returned to the Yorktown, Mike sat back down and typed up a quick message to his Senior most officers that had come to Earth with the small task group.
`1900 hours, my personal residence. You are all invited to a cookout. This even will be informal and not required. However, you just might have a good time swimming, boating, eating, and getting to know your fellow crew members. You're welcome to bring any family or friends that you wish. Hope to see you tonight.`
It wasn't the most inspiring message he'd ever sent to his crew, but he hoped they would take him up on the offer and attend, after all they all needed the break.
He then added the names to the message;
Captain. Harrison, Chief Branson, Dr. t`khellian, Captain K`Temoc, Lieutenant Commander Wright, Captain Greenwood, Lieutenant Gillo, Captain Andrews, Captain Mark, Chief Petty Officer O`Reily, Lieutenant Colonel Highsmith.
