760 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Mission 87 - Disaster
Location: Earth, Starfleet Academy
Timeline: MD2 1015hrs

ON:

It was a clear day, spring would soon be upon the land, and a cool breeze was blowing in from the bay. K’Wor was walking from his first class to his second of the day. He wasn’t a big fan of his propulsion dynamics class...especially it being his first of the day at 0800 hours, but he enjoyed his Emergency Field Engineering class was a different story. Perhaps it was because by 1030 hours he was wide awake, perhaps it was because the class was more hands on instead of ‘book work’, or perhaps it was because the Profession made the class fun. Master Chief Petty Officer Miles O’Brien.

K’Wor was actually lucky, he had several good professors. Becca wasn’t as fortunate. She was having a hard time with her Battle Field Trauma Professor, and her Professor for Advising & Counseling Basics had been hitting on her and even though she’s told the Deltan Professor she wasn’t interested. K’Wor knew, and while he wanted to rip the guy’s head off, he knew that wasn’t the best way to solve the problem. Spring Break was coming up next week, and the two were planning a trip to Starbase 400 for the week and Becca was planning to ask her Dad for advice while she was there.

K’Wor entered the class room for his 1030 Emergency Field Engineering class. None of the other Cadets were present, but K’Wor saw a rather attractive young woman talking to Master Chief O’Brien. K’Wor set his PADDs on his desk, but he kept glancing at the woman. After a few minutes she gave O’Brien a hug and started to leave. She walked by K’Wor and both exchanged smiles. As the woman passed, K’Wor’s eyes followed her as he left the room. K’Wor then turned to look back at his PADD for the class, but his eyes met those of Master Chief O’Brien who was now standing beside K’Wor’s desk.

“Is there a problem Cadet?” O’Brien asked.

K’Wor was taken a little off guard, “Um, no, Chief…sir. No sir.”

O’Brien stared down the young man for a moment without saying a word, but finally K’Wor spoke up.

“Who was that, Sir.” K’Wor asked.

“That, Cadet, is my daughter Molly.” O’Brien replied.

K’Wor sunk down into his seat, embarrassed. “That’s Molly?”

O’Brien cracked a smile, but didn’t let K’Wor see, “Yes Cadet K’Wor, that’s Molly.”

K’Wor had met Molly a few times over the years when he was living aboard the Pegasus and the ship stopped at DS9 or Earth after O’Brien started teaching at the Academy...but it had been years. Molly was two years older than K’Wor, they’d played together some, but hadn’t really kept in touch.

K’Wor didn’t know what to say, as O’Brien turned around and walked back to the front of the with a large smile on his face.

Elsewhere on the Starfleet Academy Campus in San Francisco, Becca was leaving her first class which had ran over. That didn’t matter much to her, she didn’t have a 1030 class, her next wasn’t until 1105...but it was her Advising & Counseling Basics class and she wasn’t looking forward to it at all.

As she walked across the Presidio one of her class mates ran to catch up with her. The tall Betazoid looked over at Becca.

“You okay?”

“Are you scanning my thoughts again?” Becca replied with a smile.

“It doesn’t take a telepath to know you hate this class.” Rela replied.

“It’s not the class, it’s Professor Jedda.” Becca replied. “He’s asked me out seven times now, he’s always looking at me during class, and I even saw him following me into Pike Hall last week.”

“Have you talked to Commander Yorklan about it?” Rela asked.

“Yes, twice, but he tells me I’m either making more out of it than it is or that he’s talked to Professor Jedda and he denies it.” Becca replied. “My brother’s furious and wants to confront him, but I told K’Wor no. I don’t want him in trouble at the Academy because of me. I’m going to talk to my Dad about it on Spring Break.”

Both Cadets tried to smile, Rela worried about her friend, as they walked toward class.
