2,412 words; about a 12 minute read

Mission: Mission 86 - Discovery
Location: Risa
Timeline: MD2 - 1320 hrs

Lee and Alex were back in their room at the hotel. Lee just finished talking with General Torg. The Ya'Vang was still in orbit and would stay.

"How are you feeling Imazdi?" He had walked into the bedroom.

Alex was sitting on the bed with a pillow clutched in her arm, hugging it, "I'm not sure."

He looked at her:"Well just finished speaking with General Torg and the I.K.S. Ya'Vang are going to remain here at Risa and to keep an eye on us till we head back."

"Good." She stared at the wall, "I was thinking about his son. I actually remember him. It was several years ago. I had just gotten two newbies and it was not more than a few days when we were assigned to what was supposed to be a simple mission. I had to gather up a team and decided to have one of the newbies join us. hat man's son excelled in the Academy so I chose him.

We were to beam down to a planet and retrieve a couple of stranded crew members whose shuttle had crashed. So my team and two others beamed down. We found them but then we were attacked. All of us began to trade fire except for the newbie. He was just standing there, shaking like a leaf and his eyes were wide. I yelled at him and he seemed to snap out of it. But as soon as one of us was hit, he froze again. I turned around and literally pushed him out of harm's way. That's when I heard a swoosh near my ear. When I turned back around, my other security officer had already taken care of the person who tried to kill me. We initiated an emergency beam out and got the hell off the planet.

So I made my report and said that he had no business being a Security officer on a starbase or starship. After that, I never saw him again." She looked up at Lee, "But I never thought that he would kill himself."

Lee walked closer to Alex then sat down next to her:"You did what you thought was right, some people can pass with flying colors at the Academy but when it boils down to real life situations they choke. He wasn't the first one and doubt that he will be the last. And who's to say that he didn't kill himself that he's still alive. He might have faked his death to get away from the pressure of his father."

"I don't know. Maybe."

He blew out a breath:"I had a classmate back when I was in the Academy, his father was a really tough Marine who been through a lot in his career and managed to make it through a few tough spots. My classmate nearly killed himself busting his ass through his whole time in the Academy, but no matter how hard he tried it still wasn't good enough for his old man. Finally we graduated from the Academy and cause he didn't graduate in the top ten of the class his father went crazy." He looked at her "Of course it didn't help that the father was drunk. The poor kid was so embarrassed, I had planned on going over there to say something to the old man but before I could get there my father had managed to beat me there. My father said a few choice words to the guy and he didn't like that so he swung but my dad managed to side step the punch and cold cocked the guy. Starfleet security by then had showed up and arrested the man."

Alex looked at Lee as she listened.

Lee sat there for a moment:"The kid ended up faking his own death about 6 months later. Every one of us thought he had died, my parents even went to the funeral with me. Then a couple years before I was stationed on Star Base 400, I was awaiting transport on DS9 when I spotted about 3 Romulans walking around the Promenade. Long story short on that one, my former class mate had himself surgical altered and was living as a Romulan. I promised him that I would never inform his family or my family of what happen."

"If he did that, I feel sorry for his dad. I couldn't imagine what he was going through. I think about Paul going to the Academy in a few months and I worry that he is only going because he thinks that's what I want him to do. I need him to know that he has a choice and whatever it is he chooses, I will support him."

"Have you talked to Paul about it?"

"I haven't had a chance to yet. With the wedding and stuff, there has been no time to do anything. I'm planning to once we return."

Lee laid back on the bed and started to rub Alex's back:"I love you Imzadi."

"I love you too." She started to think about what had happened, thinking that she had lost him before they even started their lives together. The image of his torture was still fresh in her mind. She turned back to him, "I want you to know that I will never take you for granted."

Lee looked deep into her eyes then placed his hand on her cheek as he spoke in her mind:"And I will always be there for you and Paul no matter what."

Alex settled into Lee's arms. She just couldn't stop thinking about what happened, "It was such a waste to hold so much hate, anger and he dragged others down with him."

He held her close to him:"There are many people that are that way. Look what happen with former Klingon Chancellor Gowron, he almost brought down the whole Klingon Empire."

"My ex did a lot of mean things to me. I was angry but I let it go and went on with my life. I didn't like how hating him made me feel. I can't imagine holding on to that hate for two years. The things it made him do. I thought," she paused to collect herself, "I thought I lost you."

He looked at her:"Yea a lot of people don't like how being angry and hateful and there are people who love it and thrive on it." Lee gave her a small smile:"I know and am sorry you went through that Imzadi."

"It's not your fault. They got the upper hand but in the end, we won. That's all that counts." Alex tried to forced back a yawn to no avail, "Sorry."

He chuckled:"It's ok Imzadi we've had a long couple days."

"I'm sorry that our honeymoon was ruined. I wish...that we could...erase what happened but...I don't think...that Bremer...would like to...slingshot...around the s..." Her voice trailed off as she fell asleep in his arms.

He had a funny look on his face for a second before realizing she had fallen asleep. He just smiled and laid there holding her as she slept.

1635 hrs

Alex became restless as she slept. The day's events had taken a toll on her. She woke up with a start from the sound of her voice, "Lee!" She sat up, feeling out of sort.

He come trotting out of the fresher in only a towel half shaved:"What's wrong Imzadi?"

She ran her fingers through her hair, "Nothing. It was nothing." She deeply inhaled then exhaled, "I think I'll take a shower as well." She climbed out of the bed and moved towards the bathroom.

Lee raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything, he could feel the turmoil coming strongly from her. He nodded then turned back and went into the bathroom.

Alex let the water run over her head for a few moments then proceeded with the rest of her shower. "Can you hand me my towel?"

Lee hands Alex a towel as he takes one himself to wipe his face off, deciding to start growing a goatee.

Alex wrapped the towel around her and stepped out. She glanced over at Lee and gave him an approving smile. She then stepped back into the bedroom. With a robe on, she went into the other room and poured herself a glass of wine, sat on the couch and got comfy.

Lee smiled at her and watched her walk out of the bathroom, he then stepped into the bedroom and put on a pair of Tholian silk boxers and walked into the other room with a glass of Romulan ale.

"Do you want to talk about it?" As he sat next to her.

She drank down the wine and poured herself another one. She didn't speak right away as if the subject was difficult for her. She looked at Lee and paused a little longer, "After everything I went through in my life, I felt that I could handle anything. I prided myself on being tough, that nothing could get to me. And now, I feel like I've taken a few steps backwards." She took another gulp of her wine.

He sat there and looked at her for a few seconds and then took a sip of ale:"I understand that you feel that you have taken a few steps back but to me it feels like you've taken a few steps forward. You've proven that yes you are tough as they come but by shown that you have heart and do care about a lot that truly shows how tough you really are."

"I don't know anymore. Everything I saw...felt...keeps playing over and over in my head. I've never felt so helpless, weak, not even when I was going through that crap with Reuben."

"I know and am sorry that it happen. Some people are very cruel in this world Imzadi. Maybe you should talk to a counselor when we return to 400."

"Maybe you're right." She finished off her second glass of wine, "Speaking of returning to Starbase 400, I think I'm ready to go back. I miss my son." She felt bad for saying that but the honeymoon was ruined for her. She poured herself another glass.

Lee nodded as he downed his glass of Romulan ale then arose to pour a second one."General Torg says the Ya'Vang will depart for Starbase 400 at 0900 tomorrow."

"Then let them know that we are hitching a ride." She could feel the wine taking an effect on her but she didn't care. After what she went through, she felt justified to get a little drunk.

He turned around with his 2nd glass:"Don't worry that is already taken care of. Our shuttle is sitting in the cargo bay of the Ya'Vang. We are to beam up at 0800." Lee sat down next to her.

"Perfect." Alex finished her wine once more and turned to Lee. She was feeling a bit tipsy and in a chipper mood, "You know we should do?" She stood up and named some random slow song for the computer to play. "Dance!" She stood there with her hand out, waiting for his response.

He smiled sitting down his glass:"Sounds lovely" He stood up and put his big strong arms around her lovely waist and started to move slowly.

Alex put her arms around his neck and moved in as close as possible. "I remember watching my parents dance together. They'd put us in bed and then the music would begin. I snuck out of my room one night and watched them dance downstairs. It didn't happen too often but when it did, it was beautiful." With her mom in Starfleet, her being home was a rarity.

"Yea my parents danced a lot also. And my father being in Star Fleet wasn't easy." He held her close as they danced.

The music ended, "We have one more night here. Let's go to one of those tropical theme restaurants and have dinner and then maybe walk along the beach. What do you say?" She wanted to forget about everything and enjoy their last night there.

He looked down at her and smiled:"Sure sounds good to me Imzadi."

Alex smiled finally, "Then let's go. I can be dressed in 20." Alex changed into a sleeveless evening dress, a rarity for her. She wanted this evening to be special and uninterrupted by anything negative. She waited for Lee.

Lee comes strolling out wearing a black 20's gangster style hat, black dress pants, black pinstripe shirt half way un button and a black trench coat:"This ok?" He smirks.

Alex took a double look and smiled, "You're looking mighty handsome tonight Mr. Pike."

Lee gave her a smirk and in the best Al Capone impression:"Why thank you sweetheart. You are too Mrs. Pike."

"Why thank you. Shall we go and enjoy our last night here?" She walked towards the door. When she opened the door, she started looking out at her surroundings.

"Welcome. Sure let's go" He followed her out, putting a strong reassuring hand on her back letting her know he was there.

The restaurant was very close to where they were staying. Calypso music was playing. Palm trees and everything tropical surrounded them. They were seated in a cozy section of the restaurant as the music played in the background. The waitress took their drink orders. Alex ordered a pina colada.

Lee took off his hat and put it down next to him. He ordered a amaretto and coke.

The drinks were brought back to the table. Alex smiled at the little umbrella in her drink along with some skewered fruit.

Lee took a sip of his drink then smiled at Alex:"So Mrs.Pike, what sounds good for dinner?"

"I'm not sure. Everything looks good." She knew that this would be her last time for a long time that she would get to eat real food, not replicated. "How about you?"

Lee sat there looking over the menu for a minute:"I think that I will have the prime rib dinner."

The waiter came by and took their food order. They enjoyed their dinner and the rest of the evening. In the morning, Azhurlar and a couple other Klingon warriors beamed down to escort Lee and Alex back up to the Ya'Vang where they headed off to Starbase 400.
