A letter home

460 words; about a 2 minute read
Hades sat inside the Talaxian Cafeteria. It had been long deserted relying only on replicators to fill the needs of its customers. It had been a long and difficult day of training and prepping supply orders and they had ended a few hours ago with the understanding that all would get some sleep and meet again in the morning. Hades couldn’t sleep, however. He was wide awake. He loved this quiet time and took advantage of it to record a letter to his sister Laga.
Dear Laga,
It’s been a long road back to life since my illness. When you and I parted I could think of nothing but getting back to work and threw myself in the task. Love took me by surprise. I thought I could finally have my life complete yet just like ashes caught in the wind my heart was broken and scattered.”
He sighed and sipped the herbal tea that he’d replicated. The window in front of him looked out onto the colony. It was alien yet beautiful in a desolate kind of way. He continued his letter,
Having Braxton on the station has helped because he seems to not want to let me fall into the abyss. I have thrown myself into my work again to the point of exhaustion and finally, finally from the depths of my loneliness and self-imposed isolation something has shifted in me.
You’ll be happy to know that I will be speaking with a counselor. Ilan Rol, he’s the new counselor and he seems to see the depths of my confusion and has made it clear, at least at the start of this trip away from the station, that if I do not submit to counselling he’d pull me off duty so fast my tricorder would spin.”
Hades smiled into his tea, No doubt you are doing the happy dance at the fact that I have finally agreed to seek the aid of a counselor. I know that you are because it’s the PS to all of your letters and in some cases the only question in them.”
He paused and looked out at the colony. Thank you Laga. Thank you for not giving up on even when I gave up on myself.”
He closed the voice letter and saved it for sending when he got back to the Essex.
He was so engrossed in his thoughts and letter that he didn’t notice the form in the corner who’d stood and made their escape out the door. Hades stood and walked over to the replicator refilling his tea. One more cup and then he’d rest. One more cup refill his strength.
