748 words; about a 4 minute read

Hades snapped back from the memory, he waved, smiled, and headed back down towards the habitat area. Fifteen minutes later he was back in his quarters. Hades tossed his jacket onto the sofa and eased his tired bones into the chair.

He sighed and looked around his quarters. Life was good, or as good as it could be for now. He stood up and walked over to the replicator. “Computer I want a double fudge Sunday with whipped …no scratch that. I want a nice hot cup of peppermint tea with a twist of lemon.” He watched as the replicator shimmered his wish into existence. Smiling he took up the mug and walked over to a bay window like area that he’d been lucky enough to have in his quarters. He sat down and gazed out at the stars. It had been ages, or so it seemed, since he’d done that.

“Computer begin personal log Hades, today’s date and time stamped on it.”

He waited for the chirp, a crystal-clear sign that the log was open and waiting for him to start.

“Personal log Hades. It’s been….an interesting time. My last log was weeks ago. I am happy to report that things have settled on the work front. I work with an amazing group of doctors and I see us as a family more than just a cold department in Starfleet. We are learning one another’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s been good,” he sipped his tea and paused a moment to look out at the stars.

“On a personal level I’ve been making wonderful friends. I’ve met the staff and crew and even have had some lunches and after hours meets. It has been a wonderful time in that respect.” Once again Hades paused at some length, this time.

“Shrivol…that has not been going well. He’s been distant and unresponsive as of late. It is as if he’s pulling away and I can’t do anything to stop it. We had a fight a few days ago. I had attempted to ask what was wrong and he just shot me down. I believe his exact words were…well that’s not important. I am deeply saddened at the developments but matters of the heart are never that easy.” Hades sighed heavily, “I just need some time to rest and put all this into perspective.”

Hades rose from his seat with his empty cup and made his way to the replicator to put away the used cup. He hit the command that would pull apart the molecules of the cup and absorb it back into nothingness. “On another note, this illness that I have has been growing worse but there is hope at the end of the tunnel. My old friend Eviess is on her way here. I don’t know when she arrives but she has had a successful time at healing people in my condition. I have not seen her for a long time and look forward to catching up. I look forward to being able to sleep again and not wondering if this illness will put me in a yearlong catatonic state again. I look forward to getting my life on track. It’s…somewhat liberating to know that there is something that can be done.”

Turning away from the replicator he divested himself of his clothing heading to the bathroom. He was glad that he had asked for a real water shower and a tub. Today was a shower kind of day. He’d shower, grab a nap and then go back to the sickbay. “That’s it for now. Computer end log.” He heard the chirp again and closed the shower door.

For a long time he stood under the spray of the shower letting the water cleanse his very soul. Letting it wash away all the pain, the uncertainty, the stress of the weeks that passed. “A new start…” he whispered. What was it his sister had said…the words flooded back to him, every single day is a new start Hades. You have to learn how to let go of the past and start fresh every single day. Nothing from the past should carry over whether it’s years, months or days.’ She was right.

He’d nap and from that moment it would be a new start. A rebirth of sorts.
