Mission:
Mission 84 - Blockade
Location: Admiral Bremer's Officer, Starbase 400
Timeline: Following 'Home at Last'
ON:
Mike was in his Office, waiting for T'Lar, Lokran, and Baratan to discuss some changes in the Security Department...
R'nard had just come back from a covert mission for Special Forces, in which he was always on call, when he got the message. He went right to Admiral Bremer's office and rang the chime.
Saith grimaced. She hated being called to the Admirals’ office. It almost always meant she was in trouble. She had planned to have lunch with Maal, and maybe work on their ‘special project’ but it looks like that would have to wait. She left a message for Maal before heading out of their quarters; she didn’t want to keep Maal waiting for her, but she didn’t dare keep the Admiral waiting.
Bremer yelled "Enter" when the door chimed, and stood at Lokran and Baratan entered.
"Thank you both of coming, please have a seat." He said with a smile. "We'll wait for Vice Admiral T'Lar before we get started."
As he sat back down, he noticed Saith's expression, a little concern showing. 'I still got it' Mike thought to himself, a little pleased he could still intimidate others when needed.
Deela walked in unannounced, her mind still elsewhere. She stopped for a moment, taking in her surroundings. She nodded to everyone before sitting down.
Mike smiled and nodded to his XO, "Now that everyone is here. I'm sure you're all aware of the mysterious illness that struck a few crewmembers while we were on blockade duty. One of those affected was Ensign Brody. While the Medical Staff says he is recovering, they still have no idea what happened and have not leased him for duty. I've spoken to him, and he's going to take some leave time while he's recovering. That leaves a void at the Assistant Chief Security/Tactical Position. After reading reports from the blockade mission, listening to suggestions, and doing some thinking...I'd like to offer the position to you, Lieutenant Baratan." He paused a moment, then added, "If that's alright with Commander Lokran."
Saith was startled by the Admiral's statement and so said nothing. She had been going through the mission trying to figure out what she had done wrong. Apparently nothing, she thought. Her head pivoted towards Commander Lokran to see what he had to say.
R'nard stood up and bowed. "I am sad that Ensign Brrody will be incapacitated." he said. "But it is all right with me to take on a new apprrentice..." he paused, "assistant. But, " turning to Saith, "You will be both to me. I will be a good teacher to you, and I look forward to working with you."
A smile came across Deela face as she watched her former crewmember be suave and debonair as usual. She looked back over at Saith, waiting for her response.
Saith’s eyes narrowed at first, and then she raised an eyebrow at Commander Lokran’s words. She found it both a little disconcerting and insulting that he would consider her an “apprentice” and he a “teacher.” Still, she wanted the new responsibilities. She settled a somewhat stony look on the Commander, “I will be your assistant.” She stressed the last word. “Either you respect my abilities or you don’t. I am willing to be open-minded towards your style, but I will reserve the right to keep my own. I won’t mediate with you, I am not an apprentice, you are my boss not my master.” She hoped that got her point across without being so difficult as to have the offer rescinded. In some ways losing her temper was so much easier, but she was trying to learn new ways to deal with what she didn’t like. She waited for someone, anyone, to speak.
Deela raised an eyebrow at her response but she kept quiet, knowing that Lokran could handle himself.
R'nard met her stony gaze with one of peace. There was much anger in this one, anger that needed to be channeled. "You are open, that is hope, and is all I ask." he said quietly. "As for your abilities, it seems you are the only one who doubts them. We shall meet afterwards in holodeck one, where I will ask you to demonstrate them." He smiled. "Maybe you have something to teach me. You need not be threatened by a little furball like me." He would not be baited, but let her know she did get her point across.
Bremer smiled, trying to bring the meeting to an end. Saith had a lot of anger, but he knew she was trying and R'nard would be something that could help her deal with her darker side, "Very well then. Lieutenant JG Saith i-Ki Baratan, you are here by promoted to Assistant Chief of Security of Starbase 400."
Mike then picked up a PADD and handed it to Lokran, "There is a new Security Officer that's come aboard, Ensign Nechayev. His story is unique, he is confined to an antigrav chair, but I think he'd be a good Security Investigations Officer."
Deela had heard that they were getting someone new but didn't realize that this person was chair bound. She wasn't sure how that would work out but with him being an investigator, use of legs wasn't required.
R'nard looked at the PADD. Looked through the history of Nechayev. "I agree. It reminds me of an ancient Terran saga of one named Oracle, who was disabled, but proved valuable as an investigator."
Bremer stood, "Thank you all for coming, but I have another meeting...Deela, I need you to stay."
He watched Saith and Lokran leave... "Don't you just love meetings?"
