Mission:
Mission 83 - Recovery
Location: Holodeck 12
Timeline: Directly after "A New Mission"
While the rest of the Lexington and Vanguard crewmembers were undoubtedly brushing up for the mission launch, LT JG Aidan Murphy thought it might be a good idea - not to mention fun - to get some Sovereign Class flight simulations in on the holodeck in a bit of preparation of his own. He could only hope that there would be one empty on such short notice with such a short window of time to work with.
After the senior staff meeting he made a quick stop at his quarters to grab a duffel bag full of personal effects he intended to bring on the trip. A quick computer inquiry following that told Murphy that he was quickly losing time, and had better move swiftly if he wanted to make the most of his last hour on Starbase 400 before taking his first away mission. Holodeck 12 was not terribly far from his quarters - it was only a short turbolift ride before he stepped into a corridor which lead to the corridor that took him to his destination. He was moving quickly when he rounded a corner, oblivious of someone coming the opposite way, directly in his path. The two roughly collided, and Aidan was somewhat surprised that they didn't collapse in a heap of sprawling limbs on the floor. "Bloody hell--sorry" he uttered as he jumped back, stumbling a bit over his own feet as he did so. He recovered gracefully, catching the duffel bag just as it slid off of his shoulder and hit the floor - he slung it over his shoulder again, then he looked up at his unsuspecting victim. "Oh. Hi Talan." he said with a big grin.
Talan stood his ground after his collision with Aiden Murphy. He had studied Mr. Murphy closely in the short time they knew each other and realized he wasn't as aloof as he led on. Behind his playful exterior, Talan knew that Aiden was cool and calculated. "My apologies, Lieutenant. I hope I did not injure you or delay you in any way. You appear to be in a hurry."
"I'm not hurt," he said with a wry smirk. Something about the monotonous way Talan exchanged apologies and pleasantries was amusing to Aidan, and would take some getting used to. "Thanks though. And I am in a hurry," he began, having a thought. "But..if you're not doing anything, I was just about to run some flight simulations - you're welcome to join me." So far, Aidan was hopelessly intrigued by Talan and thus he would jump at the chance to spend more time around him.
Talan regarded Aiden with a hint of suspicion, but decided this was another of his attempts at welcoming Talan into the fold. He decided to take Counselor Delair's advice and engage in these opportunities for bonding. "I would enjoy assisting you, although my experience with piloting is severely limited. Perhaps I could observe and collect data on your style of flight control. It may prove useful."
Aidan smiled and gave Talan a slap on the back as they moved toward the holodeck. "Don't look at it as an assignment, chum, we're purely in it for the fun and excitement..although if collecting data is your thing, by all means..collect away."
They passed through the doors of the holodeck, finding themselves surrounded by the inactive hologrid. Aidan seemed to ponder for a second before looking over at Talan. He assumed of course that his experiences with the Borg offered a vast encyclopedia of knowledge to tap into, as well as an eidetic memory of anything he'd read from the Starfleet databases. "Knowing what little we know of this upcoming mission, can you recall any particularly relevant flight simulation programs that are available here in the database?" He knew of course that there were a variety of Sovereign Class simulations available, but he was hoping for one with more of a tactical edge to it.
"I am reminded of an incident involving the USS Sovereign during it's initial five-year mission." Talan's eyes twitched and flickered as he recalled the specifics of the incident. "The Sovereign encountered a small fleet of rogue Romulan ships near the Neutral Zone. A ship decloaked and struck a critical blow which disabled shields and weapons. They were forced to retreat through an asteroid belt at high velocity while taking fire from multiple vectors." Talan could see Aiden's eyes widen a bit. "Shall we load the Rilon Incident simulation?"
Aidan's eyes widened in an expression of awe as Talan described an incident that sounded both thrilling and challenging to an officer in flight control. "That sounds bloody brilliant, let's load it up! You may have the honor, my friend." he said with a gesture at Talan.
Talan walked over to the arch and entered some commands into the console. "Computer, load Rilon Incident. Perspective: USS Sovereign bridge. Conn and Tactical are to be manned. Simulate remaining bridge crew."
With that, the bridge took shape around Talan and Aiden. The Conn and Tactical stations remained empty while holographic projections of the bridge crew filled out the remaining stations. The captain sat pensively in his chair while three Romulan warbirds decloaked on the viewscreen.
Talan gestured towards the Conn chair and nodded at Aiden. "Shall we begin?"
"Absolutely." Aidan glanced back at the 'Captain' as he made his way to the Conn. He seated himself at the familiar station, then looked back over his shoulder and gave the nod to Talan. "Computer, begin program."
Talan strode over to Tactical just as the bridge lurched from the initial torpedo impact. The crew ran in organized chaos as they attempted to perform their duties under duress. Talan watched as Aiden was engaging in various evasive maneuvers. Though in full retreat, Aiden managed to give Talan a number of firing solutions. Talan was impressed with Aiden's flying abilities. If he was half as capable in Romulan space as he was in the simulation, the crew would be in fine hands.
