915 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Mission 82 - The Aggressor
Location: Earth, South Carolina, Bremer's Home
Timeline: Immediately following 'Lunch and Reflection'

ON:

After the big lunch in Charleston, Mike had returned to his house in Lexington South Carolina on the shores of Lake Murray. He gave Janice and Becca their meals, and he was happy to see both of them eager to eat.

K’Wor had also returned home, and was still grinning ear to ear. He was taking Ashley to Lee’s and Alex’s party and had her contact information so they could keep in touch once he went back to Starbase 400. He also hoped they would continue to see each other when he returned to Earth later in the year to attend Starfleet Academy.

Mike sat with Janice on the porch while she ate, and he was encouraged to see her not only eat something, but to see her smile at him too.

“I need to return to the Durga for a few minutes, but I’ll be back soon.” He said to his wife.

Janice nodded and flashed a smile, “I’ll be here.”

Mike stood up and kissed her on the forehead before tapping his commbadge.

“Bremer to Durga, one to beam up.”

A few moments later, Mike was aboard the ship and walking onto the Bridge. He was surprised by what he saw on the main viewer…

“Lieutenant, when did that ship arrive in orbit?” Mike asked of the Duty Officer.

“About an hour ago sir. Never seen a vessel like her before.” He replied.

“I expect not, she a prototype. What have they done since arriving?” Mike asked.

The Lieutenant walked over to the Tactical station and tapped in a few commands. “Beamed one person down to Paris after entering orbit. That person hasn’t returned to the ship yet.”

Mike watched the vessel for a few minutes before speaking again, “Lieutenant, keep an eye on that ship. Any aspect changes, let me know at once.”

The Duty Officer looked at the screen for a moment, then back to the Admiral, “Aye sir.”

Mike looked at the screen again for a moment, then walked over and into the CO’s Ready Room. He took a seat, and sat down the PADDs he’s received from Brunel while at Starfleet Headquarters. He read over the specs for the Positronic Computer Core and LCARS 7, and he was quiet impressed. It was the same system used aboard the new Gladiator class vessel. Newer vessels like the Ronin, Prometheus, Sovereign, Defiant, Intrepid, Vista, and Galaxy Refit could be upgraded to use the new hardware and LCARS operating system, however older ships like the Akira, Steamrunner, Ambassador, Nebula, Excelsior, etc couldn’t. Also, the Starbase’s systems could be upgraded, so Mike was quite pleased with the gift.

The next PADD had another systems upgrade provided by Brunel was for the Type-XIII phaser array for ships and the Station. Like the Posi-Core and LCARS 7, the Type-XIII was already in use aboard the Gladiator class ship. Introduced in 2388, the Type XIII phaser array spent several years in development. The Type XIII isn’t all that different from the Type XII in terms of hardware, however it is thirty percent more efficient allowing for longer sustained firing, as well as an increase in overall power per discharge of fifteen percent. Because of the improved power management, the Type XIII phaser array has a quicker discharge rate as well, roughly ten percent faster than the Type XII. A huge asset during battle conditions. However, one set back to the Type XIII is, like the Type XII, its overall hardware size and needed power for operation. Like the Type XII, the Type XIII can only be deployed on large Starships and Stations. Once successful testing is completed, the Sovereign, Galaxy Refit, Prometheus, Ronin, Defiant, Vesta, and Spacedock type Stations will be eligible to upgrade to the new system. Other vessels like the Intrepid, Nebula, Ambassador, etc aren’t capable of handling the power necessary.

At the bottom, a note from Brunel read, ‘Hope you enjoy. These specs are still considered top secret and Starfleet R&D is keeping them hush hush, however I have a feeling you’re going to need them before too long.’

Mike leaned back in his chair, thinking about Brunel’s message. After a moment he took a look at the last PADD. He read over it twice before setting it back on the deck. After a moment he put all three into one of the drawers and locked it. He then walked out of the Ready Room. Once back on the Bridge, he sealed the door to the Ready Room using the key pad, then spoke, “Computer, disable Security Override on the Ready Room doors, only allow access to myself. Authorization Bremer-74-Delta-Bravo.”

The computer beeped in reply, then Mike turned and walked back to the middle of the Bridge.

“The Bridge is your Lieutenant.” Mike said as he headed for the turbolift.

Minutes later, he was back on Earth at his house. He spoke to Janice when he returned and the two of them headed upstairs to their bedroom. Mike changed out of his uniform while telling Janice about Lee’s and Alex’s engagement and the party in Hawaii tomorrow. Janice appeared to be excited about going, while Mike changed into civilian clothes.

It was nice to be out of uniform and he intended to relax the rest of the day and into the evening, but the information provided by Brunel in the third PADD was still on his mind…
