Mission 82 - The Aggressor
Location: Federation Capitol Building, Earth
Timeline: 5 Hours before Aggressor
OOC:
I look forward to the next mission with the writers of SB400. I've heard some pretty impressive things about this group.
IC:
As Sevlek stepped off of the turbolift into the reception area a young Andorian spoke, "I'm sorry, Admiral. Do you have an appointment?"
"I was ordered to report here immediately. I am Admiral Sevlek of Starfleet Strategic Intelligence." Sevlek put his hands behind his back and clasped them together as the young man double-checked some data.
"Just one moment, sir. Let me make sure that you wouldn't be interrupting anything." The man stood from the desk and walked into the room beyond the desk. After a moment or two, the Andorian returned. "He'll see you now, Admiral."
Sevlek nodded and entered the office. It was opulent and subdued all at once. The panoramic view behind the desk and figure was what some would call a 'breath-taking vista'. To Sevlek, however, it just allowed for increase natural illumination during the daylight hours. When Sevlek arrived 1.5 meters from the desk, he drew to attention and spoke, "Admiral Sevlek, Chief of Starfleet's Strategic Intelligence Division, reporting as ordered."
The man started, obviously not expecting such formality. "At ease, admiral." The man sat down, "Do you know that I war sworn in 10 days ago, and it already feels as if I've been the President of the Federation for a full term."
"It would seem logical to assume that the first several weeks of a new political office are similar to the first few weeks of a new command. There is significant adjustment that must be made by all parties involved and that sometimes that adjustment can be less than smooth." Sevlek responded.
The man smiled, "True enough, admiral. True enough." The man leaned back in the chair after he sat down and then asked, "What can you tell me about the conflict between the Krazzle and C'hakilian empires?"
"Mr. President, have you received any information concerning the conflict in your security and intelligence briefings?" Sevlek asked as the President motioned him to sit opposite the desk.
The President nodded, "Just that this isn't the first time there's been a conflict between those two. But this is the first time it has been on a scale of this magnitude."
"Very well, sir." Sevlek paused as he activated his PADD and handed it to the Federation President. "Initial intelligence suggests the conflict is a continuation of an ancient conflict over territorial claims. Many years ago, the C'hakilian Empire annexed several star systems that were, in fact, already part of the Krazzle empire, this resulted in several border skirmishes which resulted in the Krazzle abandoning their claims to all but one of the systems, making the promise that they would eventually renew the conflict and regain all of the systems at the cost of destroying the C'hakilian empire."
President Matthews leaned forward with the PADD, "So the entire thing is just a vendetta?"
"That is what initial reports suggest. However, I have tasked several operatives with gathering more data, to ensure nothing has been missed in the initial assessments."
"Alright." Matthews leaned back and regarded the Vulcan flag officer for just a moment. "Admiral, what would you say if I told you I was ordering you to Starbase 400 to oversee the observation of the conflict between those two empires?"
Sevlek arched his left eyebrow, "I would follow those orders and make queries."
"What would those queries be, admiral?" Matthews smirked, awaiting the question he knew was coming.
"I would ask why Starbase 400 was being chosen for this, rather than Starbase 349 or Starbase 911 that are both closer to the operational theater."
Slade stood from the chair and walked around the desk to sit in the chair next to Sevlek. "There is another reason, one that needs to be done in a discreet fashion, without overly, or overtly, alienating the officers aboard Starbase 400."
Sevlek nodded, "The second reason would be what, sir?"
"The commanding officer of 400, Admiral Mike Bremer, recently suffered a tragic loss that was a personal attack against him by former members of his crew who went rogue. As a result, I want someone observing him to see how much the loss has emotionally compromised him." The president leaned back in the chair, looking as if he didn't like the prospect of Bremer being emotionally compromised.
"If it is a possibility that Admiral Bremer may be in violation of Starfleet Regulation 619, would it not be more logical to send a medical professional?"
"All reports from members of the station's senior personnel say that the admiral has adjusted well to recent events." The President leaned forward, with a serious look on his face, "As a father, I just cannot wrap my mind around him 'adjusting well' to the loss of two of his children, with his wife and another child seriously injured and still recovering. Because of my personal feelings on the matter, I'm ordering Starfleet to send a seasoned, non-medical, flag officer to observe the station. That is why you are overseeing the Federation's interests in the Krazzle/C'hakilian war from Starbase 400."
Sevlek nodded once again, "Understood. Is there anything else, Mr. President?"
The man stood and extended his hand towards Sevlek, who stood and accepted, "No, admiral. You are dismissed."
Sevlek nodded and left the office for the turbolift in the reception area. After taking the lift to the lobby, Sevlek stepped aboard the transporter pad and ordered the operator to transport him to the U.S.S. Gladiator in orbit. A newly launched ship and currently the fastest starship in Starfleet which just happened to be assigned to Sevlek's command.
After boarding the ship, he tapped his combadge, "Sevlek to the bridge."
Instantly a repose came, "Zandusky here, admiral."
"Captain, set a course for Starbase 400." Sevlek spoke.
"Understood, sir. Will we be using the slipstream to travel there, sir?"
Sevlek pondered the question briefly. "Affirmative. Inform me when we are within their outer sensor range."
"Understood, should take about four and a half hours, sir."
"Acknowledged. Sevlek out." Sevlek left the transporter room for his quarters on deck 4 to read Bremer's service record and recent logs.
