271 words; about a 1 minute read

Mission: Mission 80 - Outpost
Location: Holodeck Suite
Timeline: Current

Tressa pulled off the last panel and carefully set it aside. The shuttle's low-orbit engine was now completely exposed; this was the last thing she had to remove and replace as part of her pilot training. Commander Clifford would be by to check on her progress later.

"Xavier, please hand me the wrench," she asked her nephew.

"Can I ride with you next time?" the seven-year asked as he gave her the tool. His dark eyes watched her closely.

Tressa turned and looked at him with a smile, then the smile faded as she remembered how her last test had ended. Commander Clifford had the program throw in a few 'obstacles,' and she had crashed the simulation.

"Ah, probably," she said, trying to sound hopeful. "But first I have to get this engine out. You can help me, here," she pointed to a bolt inside the compartment. He crawled inside next to her and loosened it as she worked on the other side.

A little while later they were looking at the engine, now sitting on a wheeled table.

"Computer, please display the exploded view of a 5050LO-60A12," she said, reading the model number off a plate on the side. The 3-dimensional view popped up above the engine, over 70 parts. It was the most complicated thing she had yet removed.

"Ok then, lets get to work," she said.

"I think we're going to be here a while," Xavier said, eyes wide.

"We'd better call in some dinner then, and some breakfast," Tressa said, her face serious as she looked at the boy.

They both burst into peals of laughter.
