1,077 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Mission 80 - Outpost
Location: Starbase 400, Ops
Timeline: Following 'Taking Command...'

ON:

Bremer was returning to his Office following the ceremony aboard the Sutherland. Odo and Sisko were waiting in Ops for him to arrive. Ramata’Tar was standing beside Odo and the Changling seemed almost nervous. He’d never been one for an escort, but here he was with one. Another Jem Hadar was standing close to one of the turbolifts, Marine Captain Lennox was standing beside the other.

As Mike stepped out of the turbolift and into Ops. He looked at Lennox who was standing beside him. The Marine Captain had his eyes focused on the two Jem Hadar. Mike knew tensions would be high with Dominion personnel on the Station. Most would have no issue with Odo, they knew he’d been loyal to the Federaton during the war, but these Jem Hadar troops were another story all together.

Mike looked around Ops and he noticed that other Officers were also keeping an eye on the two Jem Hadar too. Even his son who was sitting at Tactical One was watching them.

“Let me have everyone’s attention please.” Mike said aloud as he stepped toward the middle of the room. “I know many of you are uncomfortable having Dominion Personnel aboard the Station, and for good reason. However, they are not our enemy, they have come to assist us in dealing with a possible threat. I have Odo’s personal assurance on this matter as well.”

“You can’t trust the Jem Hadar Admiral, they’re killers! You of all people know how many people they murdered!”

Mike looked around to see Lieutenant Commander Dunn standing up at Engineering Station. His eyes fixed on the Jem Hadar. Dunn was a newer member of Starbase 400’s crew, but Mike knew he was speaking the same feelings many others were experiencing right now. Still, he had a defuse the situation…

“That’s enough Commander, you’re dismissed.” Mike replied.

“Sir? You’re going to take their side!” Dunn said as his tone grew angrier.

“Dunn, I know you’re record, you’re a good office and you saw more than your share of combat during the war, but the war is over.” Mike said, trying to calm the man down. “I want you to go speak to Counselor Dallas.

“I don’t need a shrink…sir.” Dunn took a step toward Ramata’Tar, but the Jem Hadar First remained still.

Mike walked between his Officer and the Jem Hadar First, then turned to face him eye to eye. “You’re the First, you command the Jem Hadar unit?”

“That is the order of things.” Ramata’Tar replied calmly.

“So, if I have your word that you and your men will not instigate any altercations, your men will follow?” Mike asked in a very direct tone.

Ramata’Tar met Bremer’s stare, “The men will follow me…and you have my word.”

Mike gave a slight nod then turned to face Dunn again, but the he wasn’t convinced.

“They’re vicious Admiral! They killed my brother, my wife and children during their occupation of Betazed! Do you have any idea what it’s like to lose your wife, your child?!” Dunn asked emotionally. It was clear he had post traumatic stress and it had been triggered by Odo and his Jem Hadar Commando Team being on the station.

“I’ve never lost a child, but both of my parents were killed during the war and my late wife just after it ended, so I understand your loss.” Mike replied, trying to sympathize with the man.

Mike placed his hand on Dunn’s shoulder, but he shrugged it off, “You have no idea how I feel!”

“All right, Commander, you’re dismissed. Go see Counselor Dallas, that’s an order!” Mike replied in a commanding tone. Then Bremer looked back at Captain Lennox. “Marine Captain Lennox will escort you.”

Lennox walked over to Dunn, “Come on Tom, let’s go.”

Finally, Dunn walked to the turbolift. He and Lennox stepped inside and the door closed.

“I had a feeling something like this might happen.” Odo said.

“It’s not your fault Odo.” Mike replied, then he looked over at his son. “K’Wor.”

K’Wor stood up and walked toward where Lennox had been stationed, “Aye sir.” He grabbed a Type-II Phaser from the small arms locker then took position.

“We had a few Officers aboard DS9 react in a similar way when Odo’s ship arrived. Even though the war was years ago, so many people still have unseen wounds.” Sisko added in a somber tone.

Mike nooded as the three men walked into his office.

“Raktijno sir? Or are you still cutting bad?” Mike asked with a smile.

“Cassidy isn’t here, so I’ll take one.” Sisko replied with a smile.

Mike tapped in the order for two Klingon coffees in the food slot, “How is Cassidy and the kids?”

“She’s doing very well, she said to tell you hello.” Mike handed Sisko his cup, “I spoke to Jake last night. He’s on Earth working on a story. Rebecca is doing well, twelve years old already.”

Mike smiled, “You’re right…time flies.”

Both men took a sip of their Raktijnos, then Mike’s tone turned serious. “Are the Jem Hadar ready Odo?”

“They are. I’ve also give Admiral Sisko communications frequencies and encryption codes used by the Dominion during the war.” Odo replied.

Mike nodded, “Thank you. I hope this all goes down peacefully, but we need to be ready for anything. Is there anything else you could tell me about Deyos’s mission?”

“I’ve told you both everything I know. Deyos was ordered by Weyoun personally to take and hold Iconia. I’m not even sure if Dumar knew about the mission. We have a record of the supplies Deyos requested before departing Cardassia Prime.” Odo explained.

“So it is possible he could have a larger force than we know of.” Sisko added.

Mike took another sip of his drink before speaking, “We need to be ready for anything. I’ll have Captain Greenwood standing by in case we need support. We’ll have the Vanguard, Venator, Ark Royal, Laffey, Kearsarge, and Durga standing by at DS6 in case they are needed.”

Both Sisko and Odo nodded, then Ben added, “Let’s just hope they aren’t needed.”

“Agreed.” Mike replied. “We’ll depart in two hours.”
