Ship matters

1,017 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Mission 79 - Triangle
Location: Starship Corridor

Lee was standing next to Alex discussing things about the mission when his com badge peeped.

He tapped it:"Pike here."

Ensign Ken Ross:"Sir this is Ensign Ken Ross with Security, we have an issue."

Lee raised an eye brow:"What is the issue Ensign?"

Ensign Ken Ross:"Ummm...sir, Ensign Baratan is going crazy sir. She's beating up several officers for some reason and saying stuff in Romulan."

Lee cursed to himself:"I'm on my way now to handle things. Pike out."

Lee gave Alex and K'Temoc a look before heading out to find Ensign Baratan. He finally found her comming in a corridor comming towards the bridge.

Saith felt a little better after beating a couple of people who got in her way, but she was by no means done. She still felt the pulse of blood in her head, its roar in her ears, and its color still blurred her eyes.

He stood there blocking her:"Do you mind telling me what the problem is Ensign?"

She paused momentarily when she saw Captain Pike. Somewhere in her brain a small alert was going off, but she was too angry to pay any attention. She walked up to him and leaned close to his face, “Lloann’na Faelirh ch'susse-thrai, docgae’au? Lloann’na, Klivam, oiuu'n jhimn, vang’radam . . . hveid’ fafvonn (technically ‘back talkers’). Hre yyaio. Ssuej-d'ifv enriov Riskin mner?” She started quietly, but her voice shaking with anger gathered volume as she spoke.

Lee raised an eye brow:"aeek'h'i ulleinvs'hhwiemn?"
(What are you talking about?)

" aeek'h'i raed'aeusnnta'jhiy Daise'Khre'Riov? aellei ahefvi iudaiht.
(What do you mean Admiral Riskin’s news?) (And calling me a Fedding S.O.B. isn't going to help you)

She involuntarily clenched her fists again. It wasn’t as if he had no idea what this was all about! She hadn’t watched the message by herself, after all. Where was the officer who had watched it with her? She glanced behind her with a glare at the Security detail, then brought her angry eyes back to the Captain who blocked her way. “Arhem mnaae!” she unnecessarily yelled at him (I am angry).

Lee gave Ensign Baratan a look:" aellei oiiuhw'udssyrh galae aellei ehdhihss 'nhaith 'ie aellei t alliu 'ie ueiik'h'unhr.
(And you beating up Star Fleet officers and the way you're acting warrants your arrest and could put your career in Jeopardy.)

“Gaenoh. Vafann, Aei irea’emae haei'n ru arhva!” (Okay. Whatever, it does not matter to me!) Saith halted, confused for a moment, then she smiled a sad smile. “I didn’t know you spoke Rihan, Captain.” Her appreciation for Pike went up a notch. Her anger was slowly abating.

Lee nodded:"Yea I learned to speak it right after I got out of Star Fleet Academy."

Looking at Pike she began “I . . . I don’t know if I can explain.” She halted again looking for words as her anger faded and was replaced by sadness.

“I have to admit, I am not sure . . .” she took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, “I am not sure anymore WHOSE side I am on; if I even have a side. I do not know that I do.” She scowled. Realizing he still did not have any idea what she was talking about, and knowing he probably knew very little about her actual background she sighed.

Looking up at the ceiling, tears came into her eyes but she would refuse to let the fall. She hated crying when she was mad, at least if she was sad that would be one thing! Saith realized suddenly that she was sad and she could not pinpoint why exactly.

She brought her gaze back down to the Captain, “Starbase 349 sent a subspace transmission on all channels. I watched it,” she paused, “they are succeeding from Starfleet.” She paused again gauging his reaction. “Do you know why?" she waited a moment, "The Vulcans, Klingons, and Federation could have stopped the destruction of Rihan. They very actively chose not to, even ordering ships not to help survivors.” She stopped her focus far away. She didn't speak for a couple of minutes.

Quietly Saith continued, “Did you know, Captain, that I was once rescued by a federation ship? The stench of death, visions of carnage on the planet, the dead and dying all around me they all still haunt me occasionally, but nothing haunts me more than my worldview being turned upside down. The Federation, they were the enemy, not to be trusted. ‘they will kill you sooner than look at you’ I used to be told. They rescued us, gave medical aid, and when learning my parents were dead, my human father and mother adopted me. He was an officer on the ship that rescued me. They proved my people wrong. . . Or so I thought, maybe they weren’t wrong after all. Kholaidlh-a deleth mnevher (elements protect us). Her voice was hardly above a whisper.

With a deep breath she glanced at the Security officers behind her, then back at Captain Pike, “Thlhom veherr’a (my apologies – formal befitting Pike’s rank). I will go to the brig.” She waited for his order to the officers to take her there.

Lee stood there watching Saith carefully as she spoke on things going on. He could sense that she was troubled by some things. He sighed:"We can't afford to have you in the brig right now but when and if we get back to Star Base 400 you and I are going to have a long talk with Admiral Bremer."

"Yes sir." she replied, although she was surprised he did not immediately have her detained. She had just admitted to him that even she did not know if they could trust her!

Just then Lee's com badge went off:"On my way Captain. Come on Ensign let's go see what's going on."

Saith hesitated. 'He's taking me to the bridge?' she thought. She had been sure she would end up in the brig. Outwardly she nodded at Captain Pike. "Yes, sir." She followed him to the bridge.
