Saith brushed her long hair back into a ponytail, securing it with a simple black band. She looked at her reflection in the mirror. Here she was; dressed in a proper Federation uniform, serving on a proper Federation Starbase. “Serving the enemy,” she thought bitterly. “Not that you have any choice” she told herself. The Empire was in tatters, gone for all intents and purposes. The infighting and lack of cohesion and government amongst the Rihannsu worlds was proving to be an insurmountable task to reforming the Empire.
She had spent her entire childhood being taught, and believing, the Federation was the enemy; evil aliens out to destroy the Rihannsu. In truth, it had been a Reman who ultimately brought about the downfall of the Empire. A Reman who destroyed her home, her ship, and her life; stupid Reman! It had in fact been a Federation ship that had saved her and others from certain death; and she resented it almost as much as appreciated it. How dare the sanctimonious Federation be the saviors and not be the harbingers of evil.
Her heart constricted a little. She always felt a bit guilty when the anger and bitterness hit. The Federation had saved her, and she loved her adoptive parents very much. In them she saw no evil minions but rather two people, humans no less, who wanted her to succeed and have a good life. It was, she thought, inappropriate towards them to feel this way. In addition, she was keenly aware that her home world was destroyed and remained in tatters from within. This brought her no small amount of personal shame. So as she usually did, she pushed her feelings down, down deep inside to where she didn’t have to deal with it. She had gotten good at that and figured she was in practice anyway, very Vulcan. That was what had made her start claiming to be Vulcan; that and the shame of being Rihannsu, a people that turned upon itself in her point of view.
Smoothing her uniform down, she continued with her hair. She wrapped it up in a tight bun and secured it with a pin. She allowed herself a smile at the streak of blue running from her left temple back to, and around within the bun. It had been Lt. Cmdr. Byrne’s blood daughter Zara who had convinced her to dye the blue streak into her hair, and she had to admit she liked it. She was fond of her adopted sister. Zara laughed easily and made friends easily. Saith did not, she had a hard time trusting people but Zara dragged her out many times and insisted she become familiar with life in the Federation. It had been nice to have her, but now Saith had to stand on her own.
Pulling her hair back also showed off her smoothly upturned ears. Saith liked her ears, they were elegant, thin and long. Not too big, nor too little. She smiled again. The Ferengi had big funny ears, and the humans well, they hardly had any at all. Everyone here was so different from her.
Everything was different in the Federation. They weren’t less disciplined per se, but it was less, she wasn’t sure of what word she wanted. “Harsh,” she settled on, “they are less harsh than serving in the Imperial Fleet.” She would never dare to offer a suggestion on her Rihannsu ships, but if done properly she had noticed suggestions would be considered here. For the most part everyone was considered to have real value. Her mood lifted a bit and despite it being a little early she decided there was no better time to report for her first shift.
She turned and headed for the entryway to her quarters. The door slid open and she stepped out into the corridor looking both left and right. Seeing a couple of people to her left, she chose to go right. She could always loop around. Head up she started out.
Along the way she ran through what she knew of the station. In her mind she recited; 19 ships attached, Command staff lead by Admiral Bremer and Vice Admiral T’Lar, her own commanding officer Lt. Cmdr. R’nard Lokran, there were two ships were currently away . . . the Yorktown and the Essex? She asked herself. “Hmmm, I think so” she replied. She continued with her recitation as she walked.
Soon she found herself coming to the doors of the Security department, they swooshed open and she stepped inside. “Ensign i’Ki Baratan reporting for duty.” She announced both so the computer would log her in and that her colleagues would know she arrived and what her name was. Although in her mind she conceded they should already know that.
She was not sure where to go, but she knew she had to get out of the doorway so she moved to the left and looked for an open computer station or Lt. Cmdr Lokran. She was pretty sure she could identify him by sight, being as he was Tralazar. She didn’t see him so she sat at an open computer and logged in. She briefly wondered what her new colleagues were thinking. Brushing her insecurities about being Rihannsu aside she ordered the computer to bring up the daily assignments. “Might as well see what the days’ plans are” she mused.
