Mission: Episode 119 - "Shattered Mirror"
Location: Starbase 400, Personal Quarters
Timeline: MD01 11:00 hrs

Six months earlier….

Ezekiel smiled as he sat on the sofa with Anna. His arms were wrapped around They were resting in their quarters on Starbase 400. As he held her close, he was looking outside the window. He was in perfect bliss. “What an incredible honeymoon.” He simply said with a big grin on his face. The honeymoon was now over, and they were scheduled to go back to work.

He was starting to think about the wonderful time he had down on Trill, and how magical the entire experience was. He was so grateful that Anna was there to enjoy it with him. The time they spent together was incredible. He loved the walks of the two of them, just strolling the gardens. He also loved going through the caves and watching the symboints swim in the liquid pools inside the caves.

“It’s hard to go back to work.” Anna said with a smile.“After having such a wonderful honeymoon.”

She had been skeptical when Zeke had asked to change their honeymoon plans but the trip had been amazing. Anna’s favorite parts were when they had gone out together exploring and the times they had just stayed in their quarters.

“Sadly the universe dictates that we must.” Ezekiel said, knowing there was another crisis waiting around the corner for them. But for the moment, he could enjoy spending time with her.

“In the meantime.” Anna said with a smile. “I want to thank you for all you did to make our honeymoon special.” Her eyes lit up. “I have never felt so loved in my life.”

They had spent an entire day in the caves, just the two of them and it had been romantic as well as they explored and discovered the sights of Trill. Anna had been surprised that Zeke had had the foresight to pack them a picnic which had made the day even more special.

Then there had been the candlelight dinner near the water that he had also set up. Zeke had somehow rented what she referred to as a cabana on the beach. They had complete solitude and after dinner had made love on the beach and went skinny dipping. Anna had thought it had been perfect.

“I wonder if the holodeck is open tonight?” Ezekiel asked, as he looked over to Anna and gave her a kiss on her Temple. She was also staring into the planet which now assumed their view. As they cuddled together, he thought to himself how perfect this moment was. “We better take advantage of this before a little one is born.” He pointed it out to her.

“Let’s!” Anna said with a smile. “It will feel like forever and then suddenly, he will be with us.” She looked at Zeke. “I will be happy with a boy or girl but I have this feeling we are having a son.”

“Are you sure you don't want to know the sex of this baby?” Ezekiel asked her with a big grin on his face, cuz part of him wants you down but also part of him did not want to know he wanted to be surprised on the day of birth.

“I change my mind everyday.” Anna said with a smile. “Right now I want to know. It would be so much easier to shop knowing the sex but then I want the surprise of it all.”

“I want to know as well, but it could be beneficial to wait. Ezekiel said, knowing that regardless childs sex, he would love that child unconditionally. “I know we have to get ready for work, but it's moments like this that I live for.” Ezekiel said as the scene started to fade away.

Anna knew he was right and smiled at him. “We can still pick our names for both. We will use the appropriate one and save the other for next time.”

Four months Earlier…

“How you feeling?” Ezekiel asked knowing that was a loaded question which would probably get his ear chewed off. But as a loving husband he was deeply concerned about his wife's discomforts.

“My feet hurt.” Anna complained. “And look how big I am getting!” She looked at Zeke and sighed. “I am always hungry and I know I am not easy to be around!” She felt like all she did was complain.

“I think you look very attractive, I can massage your feet if you'd like?” Ezekiel asked as he looked over to Anna. He started to walk towards the couch, just in case she said yes.

“I’m good, Zeke.” Anna said. “I am really just hungry. But I don’t know what I want and lately whatever I think I want gives me heartburn.” She hates that it sounded like she was whining.

Ezekiel is surprised that she turned down his offer, but he reached for her hand. “You want to go to the promenade, I assume you don't want replicated food.” Ezekiel said with a smile on his face. He also knew that walking would be good for her. Now granted she was saying her feet were hurting but she was also claiming she was hungry. He could also go pick her up but he was afraid that if he did that the food would be lukewarm by the time I got back to her and he didn't want to set her off.

“Yes.” Anna said with a nod. “I am really hungry and real food sounds really good.” She put her hand in his. “Thank you for putting up with me.”

“I'm not putting up with you, please understand that I don't consider this putting up with you. We are partners in life and in marriage, and as cheesy as it's going to sound it is a great honor to walk this path with you.” Ezekiel said as he struggled to find romantic words, most of them seemed like they were generic and straight to the point.

Anna was touched by his words, she needed to hear that right now. “I don’t know why I am so emotional right now. This is such a happy time, planning for our baby and all, but I feel tired a lot of the time and my emotions get the best of me.” She was really grateful to be with Zeke, he was there every step of the way.

“It's very natural, and it wouldn't have any other way. I care that you and the baby are safe and healthy.” Ezekiel pointed out, their baby had to deal with her emotional mood swings, he was okay with that.

Anna smiled. “Sometimes, I still can’t believe it! Soon, we will be holding our little one.” Her eyes met his. “I think all the time about seeing you, holding our baby and sometimes it brings tears to my eyes.”

“I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about that, I'm not nervous to be a father, I'm just nervous if I can show the love of nature that our little one deserves.” Ezekiel said in an almost monotone-like voice.

“You will do wonderfully at it.” Anna assured him. “You aren’t the only one. I am nervous as well. What if I am inept as a mother or I don’t do things correctly?” She grinned. “Then, I laugh at myself because I bet every mother has those feelings. We learn as we go, it’s the way it has always been.”

“You haven't taken care of me for a lot longer than I would like to admit, I don't doubt your motherly instincts for a bit. But during that process I fell in love with you. At first you were my doctor, then you became my lover, my wife. I've enjoyed evolving with you. I cannot wait to see what kind of life we will give our child.” Ezekiel said hoping I came out correctly, he was trying to keep his emotions out of it but it was very hard, and he knew through his words that he was saying that it was probably showing despite the fact this tone wasn't saying it.

“I knew you were special the day I met you.” Anna said with a smile. “I had been alone for so long and you came along and I had the family I always wanted in you.” She paused and blinked a few times. “And now you’ve added to our family by giving us a child that will be the best of both is us. I can’t wait to see our child for the first time and to live life with him.”

“Or her, we don't know for sure what the sex of the baby is.” Ezekiel said, wanted to know what the sex of the baby is but also wanting to respect her wishes to wait till the baby was born.

“I really don’t care if it’s a girl or boy.” Anna said with a grin. “I just keep getting caught up in it being a boy.” She paused. “As long as the baby has some of both our features. I want him or her to be the very best part of us.”

“You're the beauty of this relationship, I hope he has more of your looks than mine. And I pray he has your personality.” Ezekiel said with all seriousness in his tone.

Anna laughed. “Are you sure you are ready for two of me?” She smiled at him and shook her head. “I want our child to show a personality that reflects both of us and I am positive that will happen. They will learn from watching us.”

“One could make the argument are you sure you're ready for two of me, I think we both know that I'm the high maintenance one of the group.” Ezekiel said in a monotone voice, but he was trying to be funny.

Anna smiled at him. “And yet I am the one with all these shoes.” Her eyes met his. “We are a perfect balance and our child will fit in perfectly.”

“Having shoes and clothes does not make you high maintenance. They make you eccentric. And I think you know that.” Ezekiel said, hoping she understood.

“I know that.” Anna said with a smile. “And the thing is I love your personality. As a whole, it makes you who you are and that is the man I fell in love with.”

“And I love you, sometimes you confuse me. But I guess the old human adjective is correct. The heart will love who the heart wants to love.” Ezekiel said as he looked over to Anna's eyes. His tongue was still calm, expressionless of emotion.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret.” Anna smiled. “Sometimes I confuse myself but I get my way through those times. We are living our best life and I am determined to enjoy every minute of it.” She looked at him. “I’ll take you up on that foot massage when we get home.”

“The offer will be waiting for you, maybe we can go pick up some new scented oils to help massage those beautiful delicate feet of yours.” Ezekiel said, wondering if part of the issue was she had too many shoes she was trying to break in and they were just hurting her poor feet.

“That sounds really good.” Anna sighed. “I need to start wearing more sensible shoes. These ones are killing me.” She needed to be more practical and less fashionable.

“Only while you're pregnant, afterwards you will wear whatever you like. “ He wasn't trying to be insensitive, he was trying to suggest that her feet were a little swollen due to the pregnancy.

Anna smiled at him. “I don’t think you could keep me out of them forever.” She had always loved cute fashionable shoes and wore them when she wasn’t working. They weren’t sensible for sickbay. “Tell me Zeke, why does our child make me crave pickles when I hate them?”

“You're supposed to be the doctor, wouldn't you be better educated to make that guess.” Ezekiel pointed out to her with a big grin on his face.

“You are no help.” Anna sighed. “I am banning pickles once this baby is born so let’s hope he doesn’t like them then.”

“No arguments from me.” Ezekiel said he hated pickles. The smell, the touch and the slimyness was gross.

“That’s good.” Anna smiled. “Why can’t the baby like things that I like, like caramel cheesecake or bacon.” She sighed. “Instead, he hates them both and wants any kind of pickles you can get.”

“Or maybe deep down you just have a secret desire for pickles.” Ezekiel stated trying to be funny but coming out really monotone like in his approach.

Anna gave him a look. “This is “our” child, created by both of us. Maybe you should start eating those pickles as well when our child wants them.”

“That's not going to happen, but you're right on one thing, this is our child. Maybe I should start a petition to remove all the pickles in the world so our child doesn't have to go through that unpleasantry of pickles.” Ezekiel suggested to Anna. If the pickles were on the stations then no one would have to eat them.

Anna laughed at his words. “I’m sorry but what an odd conversation. There isn’t anything I can do but accept that our child is fascinated with pickles at the moment. Once he is born, we just don’t have to have them at home.”

“I just think it's your body craving it, what I read from pregnancies is that your body craves all kinds of deficiencies.” Ezekiel said, not wanting to believe his offspring would ever want to eat pickles.

“Oh no!” Anna shook her head. “Do not blame this pickle craving on me. I hate pickles, it is your child who wants them.”

“My child? If you're not the mom then who is?” Ezekiel asked, not expecting to have a surrogate for his child. He wanted her baby not someone else's baby.

Anna grinned. “He is our child but the pickle cravings come from you. I am not taking that credit.”

“You're assuming he's a he, he might be a she liking pickles is a mama trait not a Dada trait.” Ezekiel said, trying to tease but hoping that it came across because his voice was very monotone.

“A mothers intuition.” Anna smiled. “Sometimes I call our baby she as well. I prefer to use the genders back and forth, it seems more bonding to me.”

“Very soon we will find out.” Ezekiel said with a big smile on his face. He was eager to hold their offspring.

“I can’t wait for our little one to be here.” Anna confessed. “I want everything to go fine and I am patient, we just waited so long.”

“Before you know it you will be overwhelmed with new baby duties, but I look forward to that.” Ezekiel suggested to Anna.

“So do I.” Anna’s eyes lit up. “I am already thinking of the day I get to see you holding our child in your arms.” She knew they had a while yet before the baby would be born, but she did dream of it.

Ezekiel placed his hand on her stomach gently, and then softly said. “Any day you're ready little one, we're ready.” the scene starts to fade away.

Anna smiled at his tender touch and how he talked to their child. She put her hand on his and stared at where their child was growing inside of her. This was one of those moments where words weren’t needed. The love that flowed between them said it all.
