Mission:
Episode 118 - "It's About Family"
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: MD1 -1000hrs
ON:
It had been a long and trying several months since the attack on Starbase 400 by agents of the Mirror Universe. With all the damage to the Starbase itself, a major redesign of the station’s Administrative levels had taken place. Ops was no longer on Level 1, for several reasons. Station Operations, CO's Office, XO's Office, Main Briefing Room, Tactical Operations (CiC), and Meeting Rooms were all on Levels 60-61. This put the brains of the station within the main superstructure of the station and not an attached ‘pod’ anymore. Other changes were also made, in the hopes of making some things more efficient. Ops and Tactical Operations new locations allowed for a little more room, and room to expand if needed. Their designs mirrored their previous incarnations making the change in location easier. One of the really cool additions were windows out into the station’s internal docking bay from the CO’s Office, XO’s Office, and the Officer’s and NCO’s Lounge.
The support ships however were another story, none of Starbase 400’s ships were ready to leave dock yet. The Pegasus and Essex were close, very very close. A new Yorktown had been built, an Echelon class ship. She was due at Starbase 400 over a week ago, but then the USS Titan went rouge and all hell broke out at Frontier Day.
It was a new year, 2401, but a lot had already happened. First there was the anomaly in the Alpha Quadrant Starfleet responded to, including some of Starbase 400’s ships that had been temporarily assigned to Earth including the USS Luna (Luna class), USS Venture (Sovereign class), USS Sutherland (Sutherland class), and USS Vanguard (Ross Class). The Borg Singularity Ship and the cooperation between Queen Jurati was…unique. With her ship continued to be a ‘Guardian at the Gate’, many hoped it was a new era for the Borg, even though this was a distinctly different mini-collective. Then, a short time later Frontier Day happened.
No one had heard from the Borg in over a decade, since Starbase 400 helped to destroy a transwarp hub in the Beta Quadrant. But this, Changelings helping the Borg Queen. It was an unholy alliance that shook Starfleet to the core. So many members of Starfleet had been replaced by Changelings including Captain Tuvok, but thankfully most were still alive and recovered. That’s not to in anyway diminish the fact that without the crews of the USS Titan and USS Enterprise under Admiral Picard the Borg would have succeeded in with their plan. The USS Enterprise-D, in all her glory, were defeated a Borg mega-Cube at Jupiter then stood tall at Earth with the USS Titan and a beaten and battered fleet. Calvary assistance? There wasn’t any, not even from Starbase 400 and its diminished state.
But, there was still work to do. Starfleet suspected there were still scattered Changelings posing as Starfleet Officers and they needed to be rooted out. President Anton Chekhov was working to reassure Federation civilians better days were ahead and a new era was dawning. Starfleet had an epic amount of repairs to do at Earth. All active Starships were at Earth for the Frontier Day celebration, and most of them were now either damaged or destroyed. Earth Space Dock was also nearly destroyed and off her standard orbit. Starfleet estimated it would take years to recover. Primary focus would be ESD and the least damaged vessels first. Starfleet also authorized the recommissioning of older ships that were in mothballs, including SB400’s TF5. These ships would serve as close in support for Federation worlds and bases, border patrol, and parameter defense…with most slated to be decommissioned against once newer ships were brought back online. The Enterprise-F, slated for early decommissioning after Frontier Day after her critical systems were compromised during the ‘Monfette Gambit’, a rescue mission for Railian refugees on Fenton IV, was damaged during the Frontier Day battle. She would be docked for repairs before decommissioning.
At Starbase 400, the damaged USS Yorktown had arrived and through special dispensation from the Chief of Starfleet Operations, her NCC number was revised to NCC-1717-G to continue her legacy. Vice Admiral K’Temoc of course seemed pleased, however deep down he had hopped for another Defiant class ship. Other ships that had been detached from SB400 like the Luna, Vanguard, etc were returning. All battle damaged, they would need time in dock themselves.
Even with the limited number of ships operational, Starbase 400’s personnel were busy. Engineers and Operations Officers working around the clock on ship repairs and recommissionings. Security and Marines sweeping for Changelings. Medical looking over reports from Doctor Beverly Crusher on her encounters with Changelings on the USS Titan. Science looking for ways to better detect the Changelings. Everyone had a job to do.
In his new office, Mike was reading Admiral Picard’s reports from the recent events just a few days before. Mike was beating himself up inside for not being able to be there to help. Could a fleet from Starbase 400 have helped save ESD and lives lost there in the assault? Yes. Was it his fault he couldn’t be there? Of course not…but that didn’t stop him for blaming himself to a degree. Mike had sent a message to Starfleet Command, advising them that the Pegasus, Essex, and Yorktown would be back to full operational status soon and they could proceed to Earth if needed, but he’d been turned down. With Fleet Admiral Shelby’s wounds and Fleet Admiral Clancy also wounded by a Borg assault on Starfleet Command, Admiral Janeway was acting Starfleet CnC and she wanted to remain at Starbase 400 guarding the Federation flank.
“This just came in from medical.” Draven handed Mike a PADD. “According to Doctor Crusher’s repairs, Changelings can ‘beat’ blood screenings now. They are identifiable but no DNA being in the blood, but we have to make them bleed, test it, and no Changeling is going to sit while a med team does that. She is working with Miles O’Brien to make modifications to transporters to scan for Changelings accurately.”
Mike nodded. “We should be on the look out for anyone refusing to beam, either site to site on the station, down to Kalab IV, or to support ships.”
The comm beeped and broke the discussion. “Fleet Admiral Bremer, please report to Ops.”
Mike stood, took a final sip of his raktijno, straightened his leather uniform jacket, then walked into Ops.
“Report.”
“We have two incoming vessels requesting permission to dock. We’ve told them to hold at the outer marker but both are refusing. They claim to be carrying victims of the recent quake on Adelphous, but their course doesn’t add up, they appear to be coming from Nimbus inside the Triangle.” Archer reported.
“Have a Marine squad posted in Sickbay and tell them to assume a parking orbit at the edge of their transporter range, and we will beam those needing medial air aboard.” Mike ordered.
Suddenly there was a beep at Tactical One. “Sir, Ensign Ahmed is requesting additional security and a medical team to Level 226, someone was trying to get access to a Runabout. He said when he tried to stop him he ‘morphed’ for a moment, he thinks it’s a Changeling.”
Mike nodded, “Send a Tac Team and Doctor Mclintock.”
It was going to be a long day...
