Ariana sat waiting for the arrival of the family chosen to take care of the seed ship. It was a huge responsibility, and she had no doubt they’d had to jump through a whole load of hoops just to get this far. She didn’t want to intrude on their time, but she had the final assessment to do to make sure they were ready. Any doubts now and the whole program would be put in jeopardy, so she had her fingers crossed.
As the family came into view she stood to greet them, having two teenage children along made this assessment all the more important. She smiled warmly as she greeted them. “You must be the Anderson’s? I’m Ariana Monroe, Chief Counsellor of Starbase 400. I’m here to conduct your final assessment.”
"Yes we are. I am Lucy Anderson and this is my husband James and our sons Christopher and Lewis. Our daughter hasn't quite arrived yet." She said rubbing the slightest of baby bumps.
“You’re pregnant? I wasn’t aware of that” Ariana smiled. “Congratulations. Please sit down and make yourselves comfortable.” She motioned to some empty seats. “I realise you’ll have gone through Psychological tests and assessments already, but given what you’re all about to do I need to be sure you’re 100% ready.”
"Yes Counselor, I hope that isn't a problem. " Lucy replied as she and her family took their seats.
“Not at all as long as you’re prepared for the journey ahead. Are you fully prepared for what lies ahead of you? What about the future birth of your baby?”
" We have full confidence on the medical staff aboard the [insert ships name]."James replied giving his wife a reassuring squeeze of other shoulder.
"That's right." Lucy replied. I'm sure everything will be fine. Perhaps we should schedule a check up before departure." Lucy added.
“That would be a good idea” Ariana nodded. “Do you have any concerns regarding yourselves, or your children?”
"I don't think so." She turned to her husband. "Have you any concerns James?" she asked.
Ariana looked towards James, his silence seemed to be worrying his wife considerably. “Are you having second thoughts?”
James sat for a moment. “No, not second thoughts. I am concerned for my family, but we’ve gone through all this together, and we’ll see this through.” He offered his wife a gentle hug.
Ariana nodded. “Good. I see from your files that you’ve passed every test they’ve thrown your way. What about your children? Are they happy to be doing this?”
"Oh yeah. We are all quite thrilled to be doing this. Its a fresh beginning for us all, out there on the frontier with the unknown as our neighbour. " Lucy replied.
Ariana smiled. “In that case who am I to stand in your way. I’ll aboard ship a while longer interviewing the crew, if there’s anything any of you need to talk about please let me know.”
The door slid open as another man walked in. Fred Pierce the ship's captain had the long tired look all ship captains bore especially one such as his.
“Captain, Just the man I wanted to see” Ariana smiled warmly. “Do you have time for a quick talk?”
The seeds ship captain bore all the signs of a man who had lived a long life in the federations merchant navy. His black hair was turning grey yet he had the confidence that you knew you could trust. "Of course but make it quick I have many supplies to insure are loaded and secured."
Ariana nodded. “Of course Captain. I just wanted to be sure that you, and your crew are well prepared for this journey, on a psychological level that is. This is a huge responsibility.”
" You don't need to tell me that Lieutenant. Everyone on this ship was checked before they were accepted." the captain replied calmly.
Ariana smiled. “Excellent, Starfleet like to be thorough hence the checks. I know you’re a busy man so I’ll let you get back to it.
" Thank you." the captain replied politely before turning and heading back the way he came.
