Kah’lyn awoke and stretched, she’d barely gotten into bed before she’d practically fallen straight asleep. Being mother to a newborn was more hard work than she’d realised. The late night feeds were taking a toll, but thankfully Croesus was helping out as well. She looked at the clock surprised to see she’d slept in, bolting out of bed she put on her dressing gown and popped her head out of the bedroom door. “Hey... you should have woken me.”
" Not a chance . I could watch you snore all night." Croesus joked.
“Me? Snore? Never!” Kah’lyn grinned as she walked over to Croesus and stood hands on hips. “Now you on the other hand...”
" I am supposed to. Plus the baby awoke and needed feeding." Croesus added.
Kah’lyn nodded as she took a seat on the sofa next to Croesus. “Are you sure you don’t mind us calling her Verelan? I never thought I’d want to use a name with a Romulan meaning, but it sounded so lovely, and she is beautiful just as her name means.”
" Verelan is the perfect name for our baby. Because you are beautiful . I have some news. I have been offered the ops post on the Essex." Croesus replied.
“Really!? Congratulations!” Kah’lyn smiled before her smile faded a little. “But what does that mean for your position onboard the station? I know the Essex is based here, but won’t that mean you’d be off station more?”
" Not sure actually. I want to make Commander one day. How are you?" Croesus replied.
Kah’lyn’s smile faded a little. “I’m okay, getting used to the night time routine more now. You do know I want you to be happy, to make Commander. I just don’t want to sacrifice our family life, plus if you’re not Chief Ops here I guess someone else will be.”
" I don't plan to give up my post. It was just suggested and sounded exciting. You're right though family and honor first. I am starting to think I am becoming a pacifist. My bat'leth skills suck, say do you want to spar later? Naked?" Croesus joked.
“If you think you can keep your mind on the sparring!” Kah’lyn grinned a wry grin calling Croesus’ bluff. “I could use some practice with my bat’leth.”
" My dak'tagh needs sharpened too." he joked. Grabbing hold of his woman for a kiss.
“Ohh does it now?” Kah’lyn wrapped her arms around Croesus’ neck careful not to disturb their daughter. “I love you, so please don’t give up on your dreams because of my worries. If you want to go for the Essex position then do it.”
" I crave battle...must be my mothers genes. Want to wrestle," Croesus changed the subject. Suddenly the baby cried and he looked again at Kah'lyn. " Well I asked for battle."
“Ohh she’s not that much of a battle!” Kah’lyn grinned as she moved to get up to go and fetch their daughter from her crib. “She certainly has your lungs, just listen to that cry!” She grinned a wry grin.
" I do not cry. Whimper perhaps but never cry. Verelan I am your father." Croesus punned.
Kah’lyn couldn’t help but grin. “Star Wars quotes now? You really want to get me as hooked on those films as you are, don’t you?”
" They're so cheesy but they fit right in. I always said they would make great bed time stories . What is your agenda like tomorrow?" Croesus replied.
“The usual” Kah’lyn smiled. “I’ve got morning shift in Ops, and I’ll see what the afternoon throws at me. I’m grateful that I’m allowed reduced shifts to be with Verelan.”
" I can also do that. Of late I have not been as busy, probably why I feel sorry for myself. It will pass." Croesus replied.
“It’s not just me that postnatal depression can affect you know, it’s you too” Kah’lyn gave Croesus an understanding gaze. “Maybe it’s that, or maybe it isn’t. If anything comes up as Chief of Ops you’ll be needed.”
" I lost contact with Dad. He was checking in but went under cover and I haven't heard from him." Croesus replied.
Kah’lyn gave her husband a concerned look. “So that’s what has been worrying you, Why didn’t you tell me before? Have you spoken to Admiral Bremer? Maybe he could use official channels to get some news for you.”
" No my father does this. He once flew a prototype starship through time to the 24th century. I am sure its nothing." Croesus referred to Deke's origin story. “Let's feed Verelan and I will drop her off at day care. I have two ship repairs today and hopefully nothing crazy occurs." Croesus replied.
Kah’lyn nodded as she settled down to feed her daughter, she liked breastfeeding where possible, though she left expressed milk for nighttime feeds for Croesus to use if he was up before her. At first breastfeeding had proved a challenge but now she was used to it, and Verelan had settled into a good routine.
" My mother was nursed by a targ, or so the legend goes. Verelan do you want some targ milk?" Croesus teased.
“Maybe when she’s older my love” Kah’lyn grinned. “Right now she’s getting her milk on tap so-to-speak!”
" Lucky kid." Croesus sighed. " Hey tonigjt lets holo deck dinner Verelan would love a dip in a kiddie pool."
Kissing both Croesus headed out for his day.
