"Daddy, daddy, daddy....!"
Toys momentarily forgotten, Emily Blake tottered unsteadily on her feet for a moment before she came running towards her father. A mass of curls and giggles barrelling towards him with complete and utter abandon, soon followed by squeals of delight as she soon found herself flying through the air. "Again again!" she demanded.
Despite the tiredness that followed his final shift, Jackson Blake happily obliged while making his way towards the kitchen where his wife was busy sorting breakfast. "Good morning beautiful," he offered in greeting, leaning in to kiss her and ignoring the groans and protests of their older children (who were now of an age where any public displays of affection were met with abject horror) while Emily clung to his arm like a spider monkey.
"Good morning to you too," his wife smiled as she returned the kiss before returning to breakfast duties. "Okay, pancakes are up! Chloe, come take them to the table please... Em, baby, let your daddy go so he can eat."
"Nooooooope," Emily giggled.
Meeting her husband's gaze, Abigayle Blake bit her lip to stop herself from laughing and instead busied herself breaking open some eggs and adding them to the frying pan. She glanced down as another tornado of energy came running towards them. "Incoming," she warned.
In one well practiced move, Jackson intercepted Mia, scooping her up and tucking her under his other arm. "Who needs the gym when I have you two mischief makers, hmm?" he mused, kissing them both on the forehead.
"Hi, Daddy," Mia smiled, waving a piece of paper at him, "I drew a picture for our new home."
"That's great baby, love the colours too. Getting excited?" Jackson asked them brightly.
"Yep!" his two youngest replied loudly while from the nearby table came a chorus of 'no'. Jackson frowned, glancing at his wife who shrugged as she added some salt and pepper to the eggs.
"Coach said there was another soccer team at the new station, Jake," his wife reminded their son gently, "and that you'd have no problems making the cut. He's already spoken to them for you."
"Yeah but Billy won't be there, will he?" their son countered as he bit into a pancake, chewing.
"Billy is disgusting, he picks his nose all the time," Chloe complained, pulling a face. "Besides, what about my friends. Sam, Aria and Bethany are my best friends, mom. It's not fair!"
"Enough," Jackson said firmly, moving to sit at the table still weighed down by two children on each arm. His voice softened as he went on, "we've spoken about this. Your mum and I, we know how hard it is - especially when we've been here for so long. But Starfleet needs me on another base. And so you either all come with me, or you all go back to Earth to live with grandma."
All eyes widened in horror before Emily wailed, "not the grandma!!!"
There was complete silence before laughter erupted around the table. "Well, alright then. Chloe baby, you are so bright and funny and will make friends on the new base I know it."
Chloe sighed, tearing up a pancake and eating it before nodding, "sure dad."
"Alright then," he smiled, "now eat up, and you can go enjoy your last day of school and nursery while your mum and I finish packing up. This time tomorrow, we will be starting our new adventure."
"Will there be unicorns?" Mia asked.
"And magic?" Emily whispered in wonder.
"I'll settle for a decent soccer team," Jake muttered.
"And shops, good shops," Chloe added.
Jackson grinned, "as long as they have a good barber."
Mia peered up at him, "by why daddy? You don't have any hair!"
Behind them Abigayle laughed as she plated up his breakfast before clapping her hands, "okay you four, time to brush teeth, wash hands and faces and get your things!"
This time there was no complaints as all four scattered to get ready. "How was your last shift?" his wife asked curiously as she set down his breakfast.
"Thanks... it was pretty quiet. Lots of goodbyes. I was mostly just wanting to get home and see you all. Including you," he added, turning in his seat so he could lay a hand on his wife's heavily pregnant belly. "Not long now. We need to think of a name."
"Still plenty of time for that," she assured him, kissing his forehead, "now eat up. I'll get them to school and be back before you know it."
Within ten minutes he was suddenly alone, sitting at the table and missing all the noise terribly.
