Kah’lyn was busy getting Station Ops back to its usual organised and functional state. The damage that had been done station wide was considerable, but she needed to concentrate on getting the jobs done that were most important as Croesus had requested she do.
She nodded as a PADD was handed to her to check over what was done so far and what still needed to be done. There were requests for parts and areas of reports that would all need Fleet Admiral Bremer’s sign off before she could complete. Checking with the computer she was surprised and excited to learn that he was aboard the Enterprise. Any excuse to get aboard was good enough for her.
USS Enterprise
Stepping off the transporter PADD Kah’lyn couldn’t help but feel excited at being aboard the Enterprise. She made straight for the bridge and the CO’s ready room.
Mike was standing, pacing, as he read a report off a PADD. While he'd been able to sit in the Captain's Chair for a moment after coming aboard, he couldn't bring himself to sit in the Ready Room chair. This was, and would always be, Picard's ship, and seeing that he was just barrowing it until another USS Pegasus could be readied, he didn't want to make himself at home.
"Enter." Mike said without looking up.
Kah’lyn entered the ready room pausing to take a quick look around. “Admiral forgive me for interrupting you Sir, I need your sign off on these reports and equipment requests for the station.” She held out the PADD for him to take.
Mike eyed the Romulan for a moment, then relaxed slightly, "Thank you." He took the PADD. "I'm also making a note, Mister Cameron Wayne has offered to work on a couple of our runabouts. This will authorize him to get any materials he needs and to be compensated by Starfleet for his work."
Kah’lyn nodded. “Aye Sir, I’ll make sure he gets any materials and space he needs once we’ve got the Station back up to a descent status. Croesus ... sorry, Commander Croesus asked me to make sure we were prepared incase of any retaliation.” She silently cursed herself for the faux pas.
Mike nodded, "Mister Wayne is using his own rented space on the Station, he says it's in good condition and ready so that will take a little pressure off the repair crews. First priority is the Station. Weapons, shields, sensors, communications. Hull is in good condition, computer systems seem optimized too." Mike was rambling. "Once the Station is stable then we'll start focusing on ship repairs beyond the emergency work already going on." He handing the PADD back.
Kah’lyn nodded as Mike spoke. “I’ve got people working on weapons and shields. I’ll be heading back to test out sensors and communications, I’m hoping to have at least a basic level of everything sorted within the next couple of hours. Anything above basic is going to take at least the rest of the day if not longer, but we’ll do our best to work miracles for you.”
"Thank you. And...good work during the battle." Mike added.
Kah’lyn smiled warmly. “Just doing my job Sir, I’m just sorry we couldn’t save the Pegasus. I guess the upside is you get a new ship. I’m just thrilled to be onboard the Enterprise!”
Mike paused a moment. He missed his ship. Most captain's had a personal bond with their ships, they loved their ladies, but with Mike it was a little different. It was a family thing. This was the third Pegasus he'd serviced aboard as Commanding Officer. His great great, great grandfather commanding the NX-10 Pegasus, great grandfather commanding NCC-1702 Pegasus. There would be another, but it still hurt.
Mike then looked around for a moment, "As am I" he finally said. "Did you have anything else?"
"No Sir" Kah'lyn shook her head. "Permission to speak freely Admiral?"
"Granted." Mike replied.
"I hope I've managed to earn some trust?" She looked at Mike curiously. "I got the impression that you didn't trust me very much before all this."
"I didn't." Mike said coldly, "However, you did help make your case. We'll see how the near future goes." Mike added, then flashed a small smile.
"That's all I can ask Sir" Kah'lyn smiled warmly. "I know it's hard trusting someone who represents the Federation's long term enemies. I will do my upmost to earn the trust you put in me Sir."
"It isn't just the Federation's enemy, it's the people that have brought much grief to my life. Losing my wife, my ship, at their hands. It will take a long time for me to trust Romulans. However, I will try to give individuals the benefit of the doubt if it's earned." Mike replied.
"Of course" Kah'lyn nodded understandingly. "I'm sorry for the loss of your wife Sir. I understand your feelings, the Romulans killed my parents so I completely understand how you feel." She paused. "As for the Pegasus she'll live on in another incarnation of ship."
Mike nodded. After a deep breath he heard a panel beep.
"Sorry sir, I was running a diagnostic of the tactical systems, there's no threat." A young Ensign nervously announced.
