Episode 106 – Stalemate
Location: USS Essex - T'Lar's Ready Room
Xalanth had never liked the transporters. Something about being taken apart and put back together had never sat well with him. Still, the breathing technique T'para had taught him had helped him deal with it and he opened his eyes to find himself on board the USS Essex.
Now he had to find the admiral and find out what she needed him to do.
T'Lar was in her ready room, trying to sort out a few things before they had another battle. She didn't have anything on her agenda and so she thought this was the best time. She had gotten word that her request to have her Tactical officer reassigned to another ship when they went into battle but hadn't been informed yet that there was a new member joining the Essex.
The familiar chime from the door indicated the lizard was outside. Xalanth straightened his uniform and made sure he was presentable as he waited for the door to open.
Deela was leaning forward as she was getting tired of looking down at the PADD. When she heard the chime, she looked up towards the door, "Enter." She looked back down at what she was reading. When the door opened up, she took her eyes away from the PADD and slowly looked up. For the first few seconds, she was caught off guard. The sight of him startled her, causing her to sit upright. When she realized that he was a Draconian, she relaxed. She scolded herself, realizing that this damn war had made her jumpy.
Deela took a cleansing breath before speaking. She looked at his rank, "What can I do for you, Lieutenant?" She waited for him to approach her desk.
" Lieutenant Xalanth reporting for duty ma'am. Fleet Admiral Mike K`Wor Bremer assigned me her for the upcoming operation." The lizard said stepping into the office and standing to attention.
"He did." She mumbled something under her breath, "I am going to take a guess here. Security and Tactical officer?" In her office, she had a stool and two chairs. She motioned to Xalanth to take a seat.
The lizard nodded as he sat down. " Yes ma'am. He sent me here to report to you."
"Good." Deela observed him for a moment,"The last Security and Tactical officer I had, was removed because he was not ready for the battle we fought in this last time. I need someone who is confident in their ability to defend this ship and knows what they are doing without me having to hold his hand. I need you as a Tactical officer more than a Security officer. You would be on the bridge at tactical."
" I can do that. I'm trained at tactical and my Starfleet record speaks for itself. " the lizard said with a slight nod of his head. He'd been at tactical for the battle he'd won his Christopher Pike medal of valor at least until the ship's engines had gone down. It was also Yazar's birthday.
Deela was satisfied with him, "Excellent. I think you will fit right in here. If you need to take a look at the bridge and get yourself acquainted, you are okay to do so. Do you have any questions or anything that you feel the need to discuss?"
" I will ma'am. I'll also go and run through a few simulations for practice. Get to know the Essex before she heads into combat." The lizard replied before pausing as he thought something in his head. " If you don't mind me asking ma'am what do you think are chances of winning this are?"
Deela thought for a brief moment, "I don't usually speculate but I am confident to say that I believe we'll win this thing and get Starbase 400 back."
" I hope your right ma'am. The federation could do with some good news." the lizard responded. " Do you think the rest of the crew's ready for combat?"
"If they were not, they would be assigned somewhere else. I require everyone to be battle ready if they are to serve on my ship. Most of my crew have been with me for a long time and I trust them with my life. Can I trust you with my life Lieutenant?" She observed his expression.
Xalanth nodded with a look of confidence on his face. " I've never let a commanding officer down before and I have no intention starting now."
"Good." She sat back in her chair and put her hands on the desk, folded, "Welcome aboard. Feel free to look around. And if you have anymore questions, you know where to find me."
"I will ma'am. If you have nothing else for me to do I'll go and put the tactical systems through a few drills." The lizard replied from his chair.
Deela stood up, "Thank you for coming in. I have nothing else. You are dismissed."
