Episode 103 - In The Darkest Days...
Location: T'Lar's Office
Timeline: 1210 Hrs MD2
Deela was going over a few tasks that needed to be completed. She found herself running Starbase 400 once again. She was feeling a little gun shy about running Starbase 400 ever since this thing with Hurd and Monroe. He was so mad at her for confining him to his quarters and she knows that he won't probably ever forgive her. Water under the bridge.
Deela door chimed, "Enter."
Alex walked in, "Hi boss." She smiled.
"So what are doing in my neck of the woods?" Deela returned her smile.
"Well," Alex paused, "Lee and I are going to take a trip to see his parents. We were going to talk to Bremer but he of course was pulled away from here. I was wondering if there is any reason why he would NOT let us go?"
Deela pondered the question, "Is there a specific reason why you are going to see them or is it just for pleasure?"
"His father has taken ill and they don't know what's wrong with him. Lee really wants to see him and I want to go with him. I thought that it would be a good time for his mom to see the kids."
"I do not think that he would have a problem with that. I will let you know as soon as I can." Deela needed to make sure a shuttle would be available to them.
Alex sat down, "I wanted to ask you something and I know that you'll be honest. Are we okay? I keep blaming myself for Earl's death. I just need to make sure that you don't hate me."
Deela reassured her, "Alex, I do not hate you nor do I blame you. Earl was getting old. He had been moving around slowly and I am sure that he would not have made it past a year. He did what I trained him to do, protect the kids. He did that and unfortunately, he was not fast enough to get away." Deela stood up and walked over to Aklex, putting her hand on her shoulder, "Alex, I could never hate you and you need to stop blaming yourself. You kept my kids safe and I am grateful for that."
Alex smiled, "Good. I would give my life to protect them just like I know that you would do the same for my kids. How are they doing after the situation?"
"They are doing good. Raivyn had a few nightmares but she is over it now. Brandon helped." Deela went back to her seat and sat down.
"Yeah, the twins are doing okay too. I don't think that they're old enough to understand what was going on. Maybe that's a good thing."
Deela nodded, "Pretty much."
Alex was starting to say something when the comms went off, "Admiral T'Lar, Starfleet Command has sent you something. I know you're in a meeting but it's marked important."
Deela looked at Alex and Alex shrugged, "Okay." She waited for the door to open. The girl walked in and handed her a PADD. Deela pulled it towards her."
Alex watched Deela and figured that her time was up, "I probably should get going."
Deela nodded, "Okay. I will let you know when you two can take off." She started reading what was on the PADD as Alex stood up to leave.
Alex turned back to Deela, "Okay. Looking forward to it." She saw Deela's face go almost white. She became concerned, "Deela, are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost."
Deela couldn't believe what she just read. She reread the part that talked about Bremer's wife, "Oh no. The report has to be wrong. This isn't happening."
Alex knew it was something bad by her reaction, "What wrong?" She observed her, "Deela?"
"General Janice Fultian-Bremer, she was killed in a battle." Deela was in shock, "Poor Mike. And his kids. When will this madness stop?"
Alex frowned, "I don't know. Maybe this is a bad time to get away."
Deela shook her head, "No. I think you both should go. I have a feeling that this is not the last of it. Take your kids and be safe. Once this all blows over, then come back." She thought some more, "I think I am going to send my kids to my parent's house as well. I need them to be safe."
Alex nodded, "I would be willing to escort them there if you want."
Deela looked slightly relieved, "I would appreciate that. I will let my parents know and get them packed up. Be safe Alex."
"No problem. You be safe too." Alex walked to the door which opened for her to exit.
Deela added a request, "Alex, if you could keep this between us, I would appreciate it."
Alex agreed, "Understood. This will remain between us." She walked out with the door shutting behind her.
Deela leaned back into her chair. She couldn't help but feel terrible for Mike. What he must be going through. She then thought about her kids and how they have no father to take them in if anything was to happen to her.
She sighed, knowing that she was going to have to walk out of her office and face everyone, knowing what happened. But it's his news to tell, not hers. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She walked out of her office and went back to work.
