Mission: Episode 102 - The Rising Tide of War
Location: Starbase 400
Timeline: MD3 1730hrs

ON:

Mike stood in Tactical Operations and watched the large screen as Admiral Kahl Th'Shras fleet with nearly 200 Federation/Klingon/C'hakalian/Cardassian/Romulan Republic ships dropped out of warp near Cha’Di Station and moved in to attack. As the Combined 5th Fleet approached the Romulan base and the planet Bosva nearby their small defense fleet moved to intercept them and the battle began.

“They only have a total of twenty ships in their defensive screen.” Rann commented.

“Something isn’t right.” Draven said.

“I have a bad feeling about this.” K’Temoc added.

The Combined 5th Fleet pushed through the defending ships, destroying them all and only losing three of their own. As they started to fire on the Romulan base, the screen lit up with several additional enemy vessels coming into sensor range.

“Picking up over a hundred Romulan, Krazzle, Breen, and Gorn ships approaching.” Draven said.

Over the comm, several ship commanders commented on the approaching Typhon Pact fleet, saying they had been hidden from sensors hiding behind the second planet in the system, their presence masked by the planet’s magnetic field.

The Typhon Pact ships attacked the Combined 5th Fleet’s right flank and turned it. Several C'hakalian ships were destroyed. The Klingon task force tried to re-enforce them but where overwhelmed. The weapons from Cha’Di itself as well as the Romulan Star Empire’s ships targeted the Romulan Republic ships, viewing them as traitors of the Star Empire. The Federation and Cardassian ships pushed their attack, but only briefly.

“Admiral Kahl Th'Shras has ordered his ships fall back to regroup.” Draven said.

Mike shook his head. The attack line had been too thin to begin with, and putting the C'hakalian forces on the flank was a bad idea. They fought hard, but their smaller ships were no match for Warbirds. They had also pulled the Marine transports of the 6th Marine Division in tight after pushing through the twenty ships they originally faced, and now they were coming under fire too.

“The center is collapsing now.” K'Temoc commented.

In the haste to try and regroup, Admiral Kahl Th'Shras’s flagship had moved too far from the rest of the fleet and was surrounded by enemy vessels. This pulled other ships from the new line back to assist and opened a hole for the Typhon Pact fleet to push through.

“Now he’s signaled a general retreat to Federation space, and on a direct line back to the border.” Rann said.

“The same way they came through?” Mike asked.

Rann nodded.

“He’s going to be cut off.” Mike added.

“Sooner than he thinks, twenty ships from Tarod are moving into position to cut him off.” Draven added.

Mike looked at the corner of the display. Kahl Th'Shras had already lost over fifty ships, thankfully the ship his son was aboard, the USS Yuzhao, wasn’t one of them.

“Sir, Kahl Th'Shras’s flagship has been destroyed.” Rann added.

Over the comm, one of the Captain’s in the fleet sent out a message, “All vessels, this is Captain Ro of the USS Ashalla, I’m taking command of the fleet, alter course 299 mark 12. Defensive formation Gamma-Three.”

“She’s taking them toward the Va’ Ber system. There’s only two plants, twin red-giants and a lot of asteroids.” K’Temoc commented.

“She’s trying to lose her pursuers, smart.” Mike added.

“Admiral, the Cardassians, they’ve launched several Dreadnaught Missiles back toward Cha’Di Station and the Typhon Pact Fleet. Two have detonated near the fleet and flooded the area with tachyons trying to blind their sensors. Two more have altered course and are sending our sensor ghosts, trying to lure the ships in another direction, six more are heading for the base.” Draven reported as he read over the data coming in.

“Most of the pursuing ships are turning away, going after either the missiles leading them away while others are trying to shoot down those approaching the base.” Draven paused. “Two have hit the base and caused heavy damage. One hit Bosva, a Tal Shiar intel facility the Vanguard had located. Another hit their primary shipyard and heavily damaged it, the rest have been destroyed.”

“There’s only about twenty-five ships in Ro’s group. A few others have taken another route toward the border and should arrive at Argelius in a few hours. Ro’s leading her group toward the Triangle, looks like she is trying to avoid border patrols. It also looks like three Klingon ships and another couple of Dreadnought Missiles are heading for Rator. The Star Empire has a weapons facility there.” Rann reported.

“Trying to deliver another punch while they can?” K’Temoc asked, “Or trying to divert attention away from the retreating ships?”

“Both.” Mike replied. “If they think Ro’s group has reformed and moving on to another target they won’t be looking so hard for them along the border.

Over three hours passed, every minute was tense. The small group heading for Rator attacked their target. The Klingon ships raided a repair facility in orbit before breaking off and cloaking while the missile hit the weapons facility and destroyed it.

Ro’s small group of survivors entered the Triangle, but were surprised by several Romulan ships that had been lurking. They fought their way through and finally into Federation space and set course for Starbase 400.

“Only twenty ships made it back to our lines.” Rann reported.

Mike was looking at the screen, but one ship was missing. He tapped the comm-panel. “Starbase 400 to Ashalla.”

Captain Ro Laren appeared on the screen, the bridge of the Intrepid class USS Ashalla behind her was dark and showed signs of heavy damage.

“Ro here.”

“Status Captain.” Mike asked first.

“We lost a lot of good ships Admiral. That attack was so badly planned…”

Mike held up his hand, “We’ll talk about that after you get here. We don’t have many dry docks operational yet and the main docking bay is still under repair, but we’ll have teams ready to board your ships.”

“Thank you.” Ro replied.

“What happened to the USS Yuzhao?” Mike asked.

“The Yuzhao fell back to provide cover as we passed Peloi, three Romulan ships spotted us. We lost contact with them as we crossed the border.” Ro explained.

Mike nodded, “Thank you Captain. Bremer out.”

Mike closed the channel and stood there a moment.

Janice, who had arrived during the attacked grabbed her husband's arm.

“K’Temoc, ready the USS Laffey. I’ll be aboard in a few minutes.” Mike said has he sent a message to Admiral T’Lar letting her know she would be in command of the station while he was looking for his son.

Mike looked at Janice and kissed her softly, "You make your supply run and get back here quickly. With this failed attack the Pact will be feeling they can push deeper into Federation space. I need you back here."

Janice smiled and rested her hand on Mike's cheek for a moment, "Don't worry about me, go find K'Wor." She kissed him again as he turned to leave Tactical Operations.

Several minutes later the Defiant class USS Laffey departed Starbase 400 under cloak with Bremer in command as K’Temoc at Tactical.
