Ensign Davik Matthews stood in front of the personnel officer's desk, at attention, as he waited to be told his next assignment. He had only spent a year working on the Advanced Propulsion Team. He thought he would find the work compelling, but it was tedious after some time. His commanding officer could tell the work wasn't for him and offered to put in a word to have him transferred to another posting. Davik was appreciative of the sentiment and had waited patiently. Six months later, he now found himself standing in front of personnel officer.
Without looking at Davik, the Bolian said, "Ensign Davik, your transfer request has been approved. You're to report to the U.S.S. Marvoski within 24 hours, for transport to Starbase 400, where you will serve as Assistant Chief Science Officer with the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade." The Bolian looked up and handed a PADD, and small pip case, to Davik, "Good luck, lieutenant."
The position change was expected, the promotion was not. Davik accepted both items and responded with a curt, "Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." before turning on his heels and leaving the office.
He returned to his quarters and packed his belongings. He had short visits with some of his colleagues who were sorry to see him go and then arrived aboard the Marvoski 12 hours early. The human half of him hummed with excitement at a new opportunity, while the Vulcan half tried to remain calm and aware.
He was told he'd have 4 days of travel aboard the Marvoski as it had other stops to make. Davik discovered that the Marvoski regularly served as a transport to take officers from Earth to their new assignments.
After the ship departed, the XO gave him a briefing PADD. He was informed of things he didn't really have access to before his new posting. He found the information to be intriguing, but he was still more excited to be assigned to a new posting.
