Nivar turned and sat down. “He was eight when you were brought in. He was ten when something went wrong with his sequencing. His sequencing activated early. I still remember that night. He was in so much pain. He was the first to sequence through.” He turned to Splendora. “He made me promise to take care of you before they took him out of the cell. I remember they were in such a rush that the door was open. I snuck out and they worked on him for….a good twenty minutes before they called time of death. ”

Splendora was horrified. “What happened then?” She asked even though she was afraid to know.

“I remember creeping back to our cell or room whatever you want to call it. I saw him outside Armand was alive. He looked back at me. He gave a nod and ran.” He sighed, “I was so mad at him for leaving but at the same time happy he was okay.”

Splendora stayed quiet.

“A few days later the Vulcans came, they arrested the scientists, Starfleet Intel was there and the Andorians and everyone. We were sent home or to orphanages and were medically treated. You were sent back to your parents. I was…put in a foster home with Armand’s uncle being my guardian, actually.”

He walked back and sat on the sofa by Splendora. “I later found out that Armand had snuck into the institute that night and taken information on the project. He’d run to his uncle’s house and the man acted quickly. He contacted the Vulcan council and Armand’s parents were questioned. The council got us out and Starfleet tried to sweep the whole thing under the rug but Armand wouldn’t allow it. He made sure we were all treated well where he could and when we eventually struck out on our own he made sure we had a place to go.”

He looked at her his eyes misty. “He had changed his name, Armand was dead and in his place was someone else. Vulcan council had no problem with that nor his request that his new identity not be revealed to Starfleet. They, Starfleet that is, were never told how the information got out. Anyway Armand made sure we had a colony. He made lots of money selling his paintings, writing, and his family fortune was given to him by the Vulcan council along with a hefty sum for what had happened to him. He invested and soon he had more latinum then the entire Ferengi race.” He looked at her. “He contacted me and laid down a plan. I would go into Section and lens out our people. He heard rumours of the project subjects being searched for by Florence and a few scientists that managed to bribe their way out of a prison colony.”

She was angry now. “So Armand put his life on hold to save people like us.”

“Oh he is living his life just…it has affected him a lot. Anyway he never stopped trying to find you. Neither did I. We saw you as our little sister.”

She smiled. “I wish I remembered.”

He sighed, “It’s better that you don’t.”

Splendora reached out and took his hand. “There is something you are not saying.”

He sighed, “That is a story, too long to tell now.”

She thought a moment. “What happened to Armand?”

“He visits the colony of our people when he can. He’s helped us build homes and so forth. Now…that story is not mine to tell. When he is ready he’ll contact you. Now he’s just worried about making sure you go through the transition properly as am I. Splendora you need to be strong. In order for you to transition…your heart has to stop and stay stopped for a good half an hour.”

She looked shocked.

“I went through it, we all did. There is a reason the project was called Rebirth. We are reborn.” He said.

She studied him. “And the changes you told me about earlier?”

He sighed, “Another story for another time. Rest. I’ll be back later we will start testing your mind and the speed of your thoughts. This….might make you sick again.”

She sighed, “Do I have a choice?”

He smiled, “You will get through this.”

She gave a nod, “I think I’ve started changing.”

He looked back at her. He wanted to ask how but she needed rest. "Rest, I will be back later in the afternoon early evening."

To be continued…
