Mission:
Mission 77 - No Time for the Dishonored
Location: USS Vanguard, Holodeck
Even as a skipper, he still had what it took to fly.
In the holodeck, James was flying a Type 11 shuttle craft in a midst of a battle with Jem Hadar fighters. He and two simulated wing men engaged those fighters.
While shuttles aren't typically built for dog fighting, the modifications to the maneuvering thrusters he was testing out made sure Starfleet could add the shuttles in rare situations along side its wing of fighters in the fleet.
An enemy fighter went up to his six, and started shooting, scoring a few hits, but it bounced off the shields.
"Let's see you try this!" James said as he hit a few buttons which caused his shuttle to brake and allowed the pursuing craft to fly right by him, and allowed James to score several hits to the enemy's six with the shuttle's phasers.
But as predicted, the shields held, and did only minor damage.
"Computer, end program," James said in disappointment. "Send transmission to Starbase 375, attention Admiral Ross: Maneuvering Thruster enhancements working as designed, but phaser energy was reduced by around 20%, which we never diverted power from the core. Right now my team is working on a new core to allow us to enhance the power transfer and keep power in weapons and shields, with any surplus remaining used for boosting purposes or longer emergency power."
Just then he got a call from Commander Rabb, indicating he was needed on the bridge. James left the holodeck and headed to the bridge.
"Sir," Rabb said. "We just got this from the Pegasus: Admiral Bremer is taking the fleet to these coordinates in response to a distress call from the USS Aegean."
James' eyes widened. "The Aegean! Commander Mixon's ship?!"
"The same. You know him?"
"He was the XO of the Yamato during the war. At the time I was an enlisted but he taught me everything I need to know about being a leader."
His Operations officer turned to James. "At our present course, we should be at the Aegean in 18 hours."
"Thank you Lt. Colonel MacKenzie," James said to the marine and turned to his tactical officer. "Mr. Roberts go to yellow alert and raise shields. Let's be ready to respond if needed and hopefully not."
"Yes sir."
