Mission: Episode 95 - Helping Old Friends
Location: Medbay
Timeline: Day 10 1130 hrs

ON:

Ariana arrived in Medbay supported by Marcus, she was hoping she was going to be dreaming this but the pain was all too real she felt tired and weak but she recognised where she was.

The rush of voices was almost immediate. Doctor Harris called out to all available staff. Braxton had just delivered his supply requests for the Marine med bay when he saw Ariana rushed in. He joined Harris who was shouting for the emergency cart.

Braxton grabbed a tricorder, "Her pressure is dropping, I'm getting...." His eyes widened. "Get a crash cart ready in case. She's bleeding!"

Braxton looked down, "Ariana! Open your eyes. Tell me what you feel."

Ariana opened her eyes & looked at Braxton, she was so tired she just wanted to sleep but the pain radiating through her lower stomach was all too real, she placed her hand on her stomach "It hurts.... it hurts so much...." she doubled up in pain as another wave hit. "Please!..." she looked at Mikail "don't let me lose my babies!!" Moments later she was unconscious.

Harris shook his head, "She's going to loose the babies it's too late she's going into shock..."

Braxton shook his head, "No she won't." He was determined. He asked Harris to keep her stable as he brought up her medical records. He scanned the files and then something caught his eye. He pulled up the file and reviewed it. It was there an order, a dose but never confirmation of administration just a note of who was suppose to have done it. He cursed as he ran back into Hades' office. He hoped Hades hadn't gotten rid of all the plants.

Harris and the team transferred Ariana to a bio bed. He administered a series of hypos that would stabilize her pressure. When he looked up Braxton was holding a mortar and pestle madly beating the herbs into submission.

"What on Earth..." Cathrine said as she adjusted the sensor readings.

"How's she doing?"

Harris shook his head. We're too late....she's lost one of the twins. We're going to loose her if we can't stop the bleeding.

Braxton added water to the mix and then quickly filled two hypos.

"What is that?" Harris asked.

"Old herbal cure. You have to inject this with a hypo in slow release. I need a scan of the remaining baby. She was never given a Q shot."

Cathrine shook her head. "Are you insane! This is not a place for witch doctor crap."

Harris ignored her. "What to do you mean it's on her file!"

"No it was suggested, prepared and never given. .....No time now. Will fill you in later." Braxton pressed the hypo right into her stomach and the hypo began to hiss eerily.

"She's fading!" The Nurse yelled. "Baby's heartbeat is almost gone!"

Braxton continued the administering, "Come on Ariana....." Seconds passed feeling as slow as minutes.....Then.....

"Heart rate increasing...bleeding is stopping."

Braxton swallowed passed the emotions that were tossing inside him. The baby was just at that stage where the heart was developing and this had to be done fast. Braxton looked at Harris. "Ariana?"

Harris gave a node, "Vitals stable. What was that?"

"Mix of herbs, Bajoran Darli plant, Betazoid Folren, Aloe from Earth and Nausicccan Demjal. Sit her up She needs to be a in sitting position. She needs a QT shot. It should have been given to her when she was found to be pregnant."

Harris gave a nod, "Alright, son. We'll take it from here." She was stable enough for the traditional methods to work. She and the baby were not out of the woods yet. Braxton stepped out while Harris and the team took over.

Minutes passed, then an hour and then Harris came back to tell Braxton that Ariana was alright. She'd lost one baby but the other was healthy and well. "Braxton I don't know what was in that mix but you saved her. We could have lost them all."

But they had lost one. Braxton left pale and shaky without a word. Harris looked over troubled by that but he still had a patient. Harris went back into Ariana's room and sat by her bedside monitoring her vitals.

Ariana stirred, slowly she started to awake the feeling of being tired was still there even more so but the pain was gone. She opened her eyes and managed to look at Harris, she frowned her Betazoid senses told her that not all was as it should be she felt more empty than she had before. Tears started running down her face as the realism set in that one of her babies had gone, another piece of Jonathon had gone. The tears turned into heartbroken crying.

Harris took her hand, "We did all we could Lieutenant. We would have lost all three of you if Braxton hadn't used that concoction of his to stop your bleeding. We ran every test there is nothing we could have done more." He kept hold of her hand, "I am so sorry Lieutenant. You are recovering well and the remaining baby is strong, a fighter."

Ariana wiped her eyes as she managed to get a hold of her emotions, she looked at Harris "You said Braxton? he saved us?" Her thoughts momentarily changed to Braxton and how he must have felt, "Can I... see him?"

Harris sighed, "He's been back to see ya and to deliver some more of the herbs to help you recover but...he's a bit shaken."

Ariana nodded, "Will.... my baby be alright?" she put her hand on her stomach. "What happened?" she felt tired extremely tired, she fought the need to sleep to try and get answers "all I remember is pain.... so much pain."

"There is time for that. I will explain more when you've rested but the gist of it is you have a rare blood type that requires a QT shot to be given in the first trimester preferably within a month of pregnancy. Your previous CMO noted it but it was never confirmed given." He sighed, "Ariana I'm..."

She listened carefully but the feeling of needing to sleep was overpowering, moments later she lost consciousness and the biobed monitors started to alarm.

Harris burst into action. He checked and double checked all the stats. Something was not right. Just as the alarms hit critical and the staff started piling in Braxton who'd been running on pure adrenaline all day walked in with another dose of the herbs she needed to recover. He saw the alarms he leapt into action.

While the others were trying to figure out what it was he read the chart and cursed. He ran to the back and was in the room with a hypo. He pressed it to her neck and watched as the readings normalized.

Harris stared at Braxton who'd managed to pull another miracle out of his pocket. "W...What was that?"

Braxton sighed, "She was given the wrong dose of the Q shot. She was given enough for twins, she only has one baby left non?"

Harris sighed, "Braxton I..."

Braxton thrust the herbs at Harris. "I have to go. Give her these in a tea, one cup per day." With that he was gone as suddenly as he came.

A little while later Ariana awoke with a start her senses reached inward to feel for her baby & she sighed in relief as she sensed the tiny life still inside her. Opening her eyes she smiled as she looked at Harris. “Don’t look so concerned Doctor, I’m not planning on going anywhere... this time.”

Her thoughts changed to Markus, “Is Cadet Mattson here?” her smile faded a little, “does he know what happened?

"I'm not sure." Harris said checking the readouts again.

“Would you... tell him for me please? I'm not sure I can face..." she offered a brief smile, “I want him to know.”

Harris smiled, "I will do so." He took the glass the nurse offered him, "I need you to drink this, Braxton dropped this off the second time he out doctored us." The words sounded harsh but Harris was fond of Braxton and it was obvious in the old man's tone but the worry was palpable as well."

Ariana nodded and took the glass and drank, "Not the best tasting I've ever had" she smiled, "I owe Braxton & I'm sure he'll be he'll bound on avoiding me."

"I think you're right." Harris said.

"I think I would too if I was in his place" she handed back the glass, "I look so much like his wife it must be a nightmare for him."

Harris smiled, "It is hard for him. There is much going on around him. But as we say on Earth, Rome was not built in a day. You lay back and get your strength back. You have all the time in the world to help fix Braxton, if anyone can it's you."

Ariana smiled “Thank you, I hope so”

Harries smiled, "Rest now." He left her to rest and get well.
