Mission:
Mission 76 - Home comings
Location: Laffey Ready Room
Timeline: Current
Stardate 65091.7:
Commander Winter left the bridge in the capable hands of his first officer. His crew seemed to be much more at ease aboard the Laffey than they were on the Saratoga, a ship that was too big for him to carryout his duties as Tactical Operations Officer and Interdiction. Laffey fit the bill of his job description and he was comfortable even happy in this limited enviroment.
The Klingons would call him a Warrior who lived by a warrior's code.
His tactical officer Ensign K'Wor earned his trust. Brandy was still a bit green but she felt more at home at the helm of the Laffey considering she saw the ship as an overgrown runabout.
Archer probably had the hardest job onboard than most. He had appointed Archer to the temporary posting of Chief Engineer along with being Chief Operations Officer of the Laffey.
David Lee was perhaps the best ulitity man he could ever see. The Intelligence Officer knew his stuff, yet didn't ahve the necessary clearances like Winter did. Still James appreciated the man's efforts.
Seating himself behind the desk which in this small cramped space doubled as his quarters. The Couch folded out into a bed which was convenient.
As he slid behind the desk he activated his monitor to begin reading the material on the historical database about the original Enterprise mission.
A Distress call had been picked up by the Enterprise under Pike's Command, survivors from a civilian ship, the SS Columbia which was heading out for Delta Doradis had problems with their navigational computer and had crashed on the planet's surface.
Then Captain Pike led a landing party down on the surface. Survivors of the Columbia, except one turned out to be an illusion, a woman, by the name of Vina had been the sole survivor, badly disfigured and multiple broken bones, the Talosians, whom had never met a living human before had attempted to repair her injuries but had no way of knowing the correct medical knowledge did so based on the remains of the Columbia victims.
He continued Reading. The General Order was put in place by Captain Pike's suggestion to Admiral Nogura and Nogura had agreed supporting the request to the Federation Council.
Since that time only once before did the quarantine of the sector been breached. Spock, a Starfleet Lieutenant Commander at the time and serving as Chief Science Officer and Executive officer to Pike's successor, James Kirk had violated the order in an effort to carry out Captain Pike's final wishes to live free of his confined wheelchair on Talos IV.
Kirk wrote in the log entry. The Talosians understood the request and Captain Pike deserved to have his final days lived as he saw fit. He had noted that he hoped one day that Starfleet would be allowed to send another ship to check on the progress of Commodore Pike.
It wasn't until Pike's death or the death of the Talosians that the Federation had agreed to a temporary lifting of the ban to retrieve the remains of Commodore Pike, and return him to earth for proper burial on earth.
"Captain's Personal Log Stardate 65091.7: The Laffey has joined up with her task group for an eventual mission to Talos IV. Officially the mission is to retrieve the remains of Commodore Christopher Pike, one of Starfleet's early pioneering leaders. I like many of my peers wonder including that of the Admiral believe why they have chosen this time now over a century since Pike was returned to this area to begin with. I must confess it does sound interesting. Endeavor conducted Long Range Scans of the system and forwarded the copies to the rest of us in the hopes of us able to ascertain the nature of the mission. With Laffey being a tactical vessel our job has become much more clear in this mission. We are to once we enter Orbit, maintain security over the ceremony site and the overall system. I can only wonder why now. What's in it for the Talosians to return to the Federation one of its many outstanding legendary Starfleet Officers."
After making the log entry, and reviewing the intelligence file on the Talosians that were admittedly also over a century old Winter leaned backwards and looked thoughtful as he gazed at the report before him. What did the Talosians want us here for and why now?
The Tactical Officer in Winter thought that there was more to it than simply honoring the wishes of a long dead officer.
If the Talosians haven't responded to any communique requests could someone else be manipulating them. "Winter to Lee, access the Endeavor sensor log report and come to my ready room."
The Asian Ensign had quickly gathered the material and with Thorin's understanding left the bridge for the short walk to the Captain's stateroom/ready room.
"Sir?"
"Let's review the intelligence information we have on the Talosians and its surrounding system. Let's also note the records from the original Enterprise. Do we have a copy of the Talosian's initial request for us to escort our hero home?"
Lee nodded and brought it up on James's personal viewer.
"Any confirmation?"
"The codes listed therein confirm to the command codes and personal access of Commodore Pike of that era, codes that are no longer in use sir."
