820 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Episode 90 - The Great Relink
Location: Jack's Quarters
Timeline: MD2 0100hrs

Jack was feeling like an excited child after having made his way home from the party. He felt too wired to get himself to bed despite the late hour of the night and he had to get his mind in order. He was due on shift at 0800 hours and didn't want to be late, despite the fact that nearly everyone had been at the party.

However, work was not the foremost thing on his mind right now. Having seen Deela T'Lar at the party and spoken with her had made him happy and he was glad that they were getting to know each other better. He was also beginning to feel a little nervous as well. It had been several years since his last relationship and that ended with Jack watching his then girlfriend Elysse being assimilated by the Borg Queen before his very eyes. However he could tell that Deela was made of sterner stuff and the fact that she had experienced loss as well made her seem stronger and unwilling to lose another loved one.

Jack walked over to the replicator and ordered a hot choclate before activating his comm unit. He typed in a secure channel and took a seat before the screen. At the other end, the connection was made. Jack smiled as his uncle answered.

"Hank! Are you awake?" Jack asked him. His uncle pulled himself awake from his current job and looked at the screen.

"Jack! That you? What the hell are you doing up this late?" He asked back. It was something that Jack ignored over the years out of love.

"Well, I was at a party with all of the other senior officers, so its been a late night. I wanted to ask you something," He explained to Hank, who assumed a look of wisdom on his face.

"Ok, Pregnant, Married or part of a large alien family that requires your own sacrifice after marriage?" Hank enquired with a raised eyebrow caused by both caution and curiosity.

"How did you know I wasn't asking after how you doing or how the workshop is doing?" Jack started but he could tell that his Uncle was onto him. "Shes my senior officer... My former CO...and a bloody good friend for many years."

Hank sat back for a moment and considered the facts before. "I take it you like her then? She sounds like a decent woman to know... So what are you asking?" He wondered looking at his nephew.

"I want to take the next step. I feel close to her and recently she was instrumental in helping catch Talia and helping me get my rank back after all those years of lies around me. But I feel something for her Hank...something more than friendship...something more than just a working relationship..."

Hank could tell straight away what was on Jacks mind. "I can hear that but coming from that station all the way here on Earth boy. I'll say it out in the open for you... Your scared that fate, life, That Borg Queen, those Romulans fellas or the Universe will take her away from you like it did with the others right?" Hank always laid it on the line when it came to being honest with advice.

Jacks head fell. "Yes... I don't know if I'm ready to feel comfortable...happy...safe knowing that theres someone to worry about or waiting for me after a dangerous mission or assignment who may be waiting for bad news... I'm scasred Hank..." Jack admitted, putting down his drink.

"Then you listen to me good. You have survived odds that others would have crumbled or given in to and not made it back to their loved ones. You've done things that amaze me every day and make me proud, but the one thing I want for you is to be happy with that special person. You deserve so much Jack and its about time you found the love, care and comfort of someone... I'm not going to be around forever Jack, but before I leave this big blue world... I want to see you happy boy... Thats all an old man can ask," Hank explained.

Tears streamed down Jacks cheeks as he understood what his Uncle was saying. "You know, you could've just said go and be with her because you'll be fine," he offered back.

"Then that would make me a boring Uncle and thats not my style. Now go finish your cocoa and get some sleep," Hank told him before disconnecting the call.

Jack smiled as he wiped his face. He finished his drink and headed back to bed with his mind made up. Before going to bed, he sent a message to Deela. It read as follows: "2nd date: you, me, and a picnic on Risa, care of one of Starbase 400's finest holosuite. Let me know when your free, Jack."
