Sevlek was standing in front of the holographic floor display, showing real-time telemetry from the U.S.S Houston. He tapped his combadge, "Sevlek to Bremer. I am aware you are current aboard the Pegasus, preparing to leave, but I need you to report to my office."
Mike tapped his commbadge, “On my way.” As he headed for Sevlek’s office, Mike really hoped this wasn’t one of those ‘I need you to remain here’ type talks. He really felt he needed to be out there for this one.
After a few minutes Bremer entered the office suite and moved to the BQ Operations Control Holographic Display, "Sevlek nodded. We are monitoring the Houston in real-time, while it is under attack." Sevlek entered a few commands and the display focused in closer on the Houston and its attackers. "From ultra-long range readings, the tactical analysts are suggesting that there are 3 vessels attacking the Houston. 1 tactical sphere, 1 standard sphere and 1 long range probe vessel."
Mike watched the display for a moment. The Federation ship wouldn’t last long out there alone. Then Mike had a thought, if the Houston was out there for a mapping mission as he’d been told initially, why would Sevlek be monitoring the ship in real time.
Mike looked up at the Vulcan, “Why is the Houston out there?”
"The Houston's assignment is classified. I have added Admiral T'Lar and yourself to the brief. It is important that you are aware that the Houston is under specific orders and will not take orders from you that involve its mission." Sevlek regarded the other man for a moment.
Mike shook his head. He’d hoped a lot of this secretive stuff would have been eliminated with his promotion, but apparently not. “If the Houston is still intact and its crew isn’t all assimilated by the time we get there.” He watched the display for another moment, then looked back at Sevlek. “Is there anything else you can tell me.”
Sevlek considered the holographic display for a few seconds, then, without turning to look at Bremer, said, "The Houston's mission was to investigate reconnaissance probe reports of a Borg presence in the area. Initial thoughts on the data suggests that there is a faction of Borg, collective-oriented, forming in that area."
Sevlek was interrupted by a young-looking Lieutenant JG, "Admiral, sir. We're reading another Borg vessel approaching that location. It's estimated time of arrival is 11 minutes. It is travelling at high transwarp velocities. It's energy wake doesn't match the wakes of the other ships, sir."
Sevlek nodded as the display refocused to include the new vessel, which was now classified as a Heavy Tactical Sphere. Sevlek looked at Bremer, "Admiral. It is highly unlikely that the Houston will survive."
“Then we need to depart, now.” Mike replied as he walked toward the door.
"I am altering your orders, it is no longer a rescue mission, but a recovery mission. You must recover the primary, secondary and astrometrics computer cores of the Houston, at any cost. If you are able to rescue the crew of the Houston, without excessive risk to your own crews, do so."
Mike nodded, “So now I have authorization?” He replied with a smirk and touch or sarcasm.
Sevlek nodded, "Indeed. It is relevant that you know what the Houston's actual assignment was." Sevlek paused and entered another command on the display, refocusing on a planet 3 light years from the Houston's current location. "This is Grenarisa III. It was the target of the Houston's recon mission, the one to investigate and then confirm or negate the reports of a possible Borg collective reforming."
Bremer paused to look at the updated display. Looking at the display, it looked as if the Borg were building some kind of facility on Grenarisa III and he’d need his Marines for this mission too.
"As I said, that information is vital to Starfleet Intelligence. If they are reforming as a collective, it is probable that other groups of Borg have already done so. It is also possible that these groups are aware of one another."
“Understood. We’ll get the data back and eliminate this facility. Hopefully some of the Houston’s crew has survived.” Mike turned to walk away.
"One more thing, Admiral. I am aware that your children are aboard the station for their summer break."
Mike stopped in mid-step again and looked back at Sevlek, “Yes they are, for a few weeks.” Mike had a confused expression, “How did you know they arrived?” After asking, Mike realized it was a unnecessary question.
Sevlek raised a brow, "It is my responsibility to keep an eye on individuals who have potential." Mike nodded and Sevlek continued, "I would like to offer them the opportunity to serve as cadet analysts on my staff, if you approve of the offer as their father. I would also suggest that you speak to both of them about this opportunity, when the timing is convenient."
Mike nodded, “Thank you. I’m not sure Becca would be too interested, she’s rather neck deep in the medical field, but K’Wor I think would jump at the chance. I’ll talk to them over comm while heading for the Pegsaus and if they are interested I’ll have them report to you.” Mike paused for another moment, gave a respectful nod and turned away.
Walking out of the office, Mike tapped his commbadge. “Bremer to General Jackson and Colonel Sullivan. General, have two Regiments of Marines heavily armed board the Saratoga for immediate departure. Also, you better bring some of those new Tanks. Colonel, bring along two squadrons of fighters. The Saratoga will depart with the rest of the Task Force in thirty minutes. Bremer out.” He knew thirty minutes would be cutting it very close, but time was of the essence.
Once the comm was closed, he tapped his commbadge again, “K’Wor, Becca. I have a possible summer job opportunity for you.”
