Setting The Tone

Mission: Episode 88 - Memories Lost, Trouble Found
Location: Engineering Briefing Room 2, SB400
Timeline: MD4 11:32hrs - Immediately after 'Request'

Jack walked in the briefing room to find the guys waiting for him. All were sat down talking but immediately fell silent as he entered.

“Okay boys, we got a priority one job handed down to us so let’s get ourselves shaken down with it, Dye, could you pass that PADD round?”

Dye took the PADD and started reading it, with Truman over his shoulder. Jack continued:

“We got a request from Major General Hurd to work over Diplomatic Suites 1 through 4 as well as the adjoining offices. From what the schematics say, we gotta upgrade the LCARS interface from MK9 to MK10, increase the backlighting and get new furniture. She also wants a hard-link to OPS and Tactical control for immediate data transfer. We don’t have a deadline but she does want it ASAP. Questions?”

Walsh stood up and said “Sir, does she want us to do anything else, like walk on water or solve the meaning of life while we’re at it?”

Jack barrelled round. Never had he heard Walsh backchat an officer before. Even Watson looked stunned. Dye jumped to his feet, mouth open, but Jack got there first.

“ENSIGN WALSH, CEASE WITH THAT BEHAVIOUR” Jack shouted. “I am starting to lose patience with you. First that debacle with AB Rupp 2 days ago, then the report of threatened violence towards a superior officer yesterday, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? Now, I have no idea what the hell has got into you recently, but it stops, and it stops now”. Do we understand each other?

Walsh just stood there looking straight ahead. Throughout Jack’s outburst, he had not flickered one eyelid. Dye then screamed “WALSH, ANSWER YOUR SUPERIOR OFFICER, DAMN YOU.”

“Yes sir” came the reply.

“Right” said Jack looking at the others, deliberately ignoring the still-standing Walsh; “I need complete cohesion within the team; Dye, I want you to head to Stores and get some EV8 Servo-kits, Watson, get some pulse drives,, transponders and hard links from Maintenance; Truman, Travers, head up to Dynamics and start work on that hard-link. We got pressure on high for this one boy’s, dismissed.”

Everyone dispersed heading for the exits. Suddenly Jack heard a voice from the corner of the room

“You forgot me sir “said Walsh. “Isn’t it obvious why I forgot you?” Jack sighed. “You’re with me. Now hurry up.”

Walsh stalked out of the room, barging past Jack with hate in his eyes. Jack looked at the retreating back with sadness. Before Hunster II, he was a scared boy who was afraid of holding a cup of hot drink. Now he did’nt even recognise him anymore. Oh god, will I turn out like that in the end? He shook the image from his head and set off after him.
