Mission:
Mission 76 - Home comings
Location: USS Saratoga
Lee was sitting in the command chair of the USS Saratoga waiting for the other ships so they could head for Talos IV. Lee had gotten word that the fighters where aboard. A couple minutes later some of the marines stepped onto the bridge.
Lee turned and looked at Lt.Colonel Ishihara."At ease Colonel" Lee then rose from the command chair and head for his new ready room. Follow me Colonel, I need a word with you. Captain you have the bridge."
Sosuke eased smartly out of his salute, clasping his hands behind his back. He gave a look around to the various bridge stations and then followed Pike into the ready room. It was about the same size as his office on the starbase, but with the conservation of room aboard a starship the room was practically huge, bigger than some of the crew quarters where two to four enlisted men would bunk. It was good to be an officer, it seemed.
Lee stepped over to the replicator."Care for something to drink Colonel?"
"Yes, thank you, Colonel. A raktajino, please. Half sweet." the wing commander replied, standing before the desk.
Lee ordered a Bajoran tea:"What is on your mind Colonel?"
"Sir, all fighters and pilots accounted for, sir. The Tholians didn't want to play, so it was just a few days of routine patrol. I've taken the liberty of sending my pilots to rack out so they'll be rested and alert when we reach the Talos system." the Lieutenant Colonel reported, all business.
Lee handed Sosuke his rakatjino then sat down and motion for the wing commander to sit as well:"That's good to know that all fighters and pilots are accounted for. The reason I called you in here was to discuss our mission to Talos IV and other things."
Sosuke did as instructed, sitting down in the chair across from the Colonel's desk. He took a single, measured sip of his very strong, Klingon beverage and then set it down on the desk in front of him.
Lee sipped on his tea:"First thing is Colonel, I would like to appoint you as my new XO for the Marines and to also appoint you as XO of the Saratoga."
"Sir, thank you, sir. If I may remind the Colonel, however, my primary responsibility is to the 181st. As long as my new responsibilities don't keep me out of a fighter, I'll gladly accept them." Sosuke replied, his tone cautious. He didn't want to be suddenly promoted to flying a desk.
Lee sat back:"And for the mission, the reason why we are going to Talos IV is they have contacted Starfleet and have asked that Starfleet come get the remains of Commodore Chris Pike and take him back to Earth for a proper burial. And since Commodore Pike is an ancestor of mine, Starfleet has decided to send me to lead the mission to Talos IV. We are to go to Talos IV retrieve the remains of Commodore Pike and take them to Earth for a proper burial."
"It sounds like a simple, if significant, task, sir. We're bringing a lot of firepower with us to go get a single coffin. Does Starfleet feel the Talosians might give us some trouble?" the Lieutenant Colonel asked. The remains of Commodore Pike were important, no question, but single runabout could have been dispatched to complete the same job. Trouble must, therefore, be a possibility if a heavily armed Marine force was being sent.
Lee nodded:"I know that your main responsibility is to the 181st and I will not keep you out of a fighter. Starfleet and the Admiral are being careful by sending all of these ships to Talos IV to pick up the remains of Commodore Pike."
"If they feel so many ships are prudent, sir. I don't have any objections." Sosuke shrugged.
Lee sipped his tea:"Some say they would like to have a human zoo since they had kidnapped Commodore Pike back when he was Captain of the Enterprise, Starfleet doesn't want that to happen again."
"Understood, sir." the wing commander nodded. The Talosians would certainly get more than they bargained for if they tried taking on an entire Federation task force.
Lee sat his mug on his desk:"Also when we get to Earth, an old friend of mine will be joining the ranks of the marines. He is Sgt. Maal of the house of Torg. A Klingon male who's career has been in Starfleet Marines. He and I will be teaching the marines Klingon and Vulcan marital arts. We need to be ready for anything and everything."
"If you don't mind me saying something on that point, Colonel...why just Klingon and Vulcan? I've studied a wide range of martial arts from varying cultures and I've found that those two disciplines aren't very well suited for humans and other species that have our level of strength. Klingon styles, especially, are sluggish, brutal, and...well...largely useless. May I suggest using martial arts originating from Earth or Andoria? They tend to focus more on speed and precision than power and that's what really counts."
Lee nodded:"Very good point you have there. Tell you what then, we will offer the Marines to choose what type of martial art that they would like to learn."
"I will also make myself available to assist, should you have need of me." Sosuke nodded.
Lee took a data padd:"When we reach Talos IV I want you to remain aboard the Saratoga and have every fighter ready just in case they will be needed."
"They're always ready, sir. I make sure of it." the Colonel said proudly. "I'll keep two flight groups on Alert 5 the entire time you're down there."
Lee nodded:"Sounds good to me Colonel. You are dismissed, you have the bridge Colonel" He looked up from the data padd:"Let me know when the other ships arrive."
