Nuala watched the vapor from her coffee dance upwards. A plate of dark chocolate sat next to the hot drink. Nuala wasn't used to having these kind of luxuries. Life on star ships and stations tended to be rather spartan. Sure, there were replicators. Replicators, however, could never taste as good as the real thing.
The ambiance of the cafe added to the experience. The place was located on the fifth floor of the lower promenade. To one side was a view of Kaleb IV, on which a storm was forming on the northern continent. The other side had a view of non Federation merchant ships docking. Below a mass of people moved along the promenade's first level.
All these people. Nuala wasn't used to it. She had been posted to a star ship or research station. Nothing with this many people. Especially this many civilians. So many people. So many people and Nuala was alone.
She had to stay alone. It was her physiology. That was the reason. She didn't want to hurt anybody again.
In her last year at Star Fleet Academy she had been involved with somebody. His name was Andre D'spry. He was a fellow last year cadet and brilliant astrophysics major. He was very smart and easy going. Nuala found him attractive and Andre found himself drawn to the exotic Orion girl.
The relationship was good at first. Things, however, got out of control. Nuala neglected to keep her pheromones in check. Nuala demanded more and more sex. Andre, now under the influence of her pheromones, complied. He was also obsessed with Nuala, doing everything in he could to please her. He was a physical and mental wreck.
Nuala become aware that Andre was no longer in a partner but instead a thrall. She tried to break it off. Andre became agitated and erratic. He both threatened and begged. The academy cadre had to intervene. Andre recovered and Nuala was given a strong warning. She would be expelled from Star Fleet if she allowed it to happen again.
Nuala still felt guilt about the whole affair. She hasn't had gotten close to anyone since then. She looked at the throngs of travelers and cafe goers along the promenade. All those people and yet she is still alone.
