394 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Mission 82 - The Aggressor
Location: SB 400
Timeline: Right after the Avenger & Kearsage return

Saith considered dropping into her chair and just sitting for a moment, but she had things to do. She made another appointment with Counselor Dallas and would have just enough time to record her report from the mission. Then she wanted to see if Maal was free for dinner, have a good evening and start in on some of her old business still sitting on her desk in Security with a fresh eye tomorrow morning. “Elements willing.” She said to the quiet quarters.
“Computer record, Ensign Saith i-ki Baratan regarding mission to Cestus III.” She listened as the computer whirred and recorded. She thought about how she wanted to word the report then began, “The USS Avenger was sent to the Cestus system with the USS Kearsage to investigate reports of Gorn attacks.” Pause. “Computer stop, remove ‘attacks’ and replace with ‘activities’.”
She listened while the computer complied, and then she continued recording. “En route, I implemented an emergency security plan, with Sgt. Maal, dividing Security and other safety personnel into two emergency response teams and four shifts. Shortly after arriving in the system, the Avenger began experiencing technical difficulties. Our power was drained completely. Simultaneously I realized that there was a cloaked ship nearby. The Kearsage was investigating the Buraq ship, and we were on our own for the time being.”
Now came the part where she really had to be careful in how she said things, “Captain Greenwood was,” pause, “in consultation with the XO, and other officers when all power left the ship. I took it upon myself to . . .” another pause, what exactly did I do? She thought.
“. . . to address the loss in power as I considered it a precursor to potential boarding by the Gorn. Captain Greenwood was busy so I took command of the situation and came up with a plan to repower the ship, and with the Captain’s subsequent approval we implemented the plan. Power to maintain basic systems was restored, but we were dead in the water. Upon completion of their sweep the USS Kearsage responded to our signals and towed us home to SB400.” A final pause and deciding that was the best way she could spin it, Saith logged out. Whatever the Captain would report, she hoped the differences might be considered simple perceptions. She would have to wait and see. “Computer file report.”
